OFFENSIVE LINE STANCE DRILLS




STANCE

Purpose:

To teach a balanced stance, allowing linemen to move in any direction.

Description:

Align all the linemen in the grid in a two point stance. On coach command (hit) players put their elbows on their knees. On the 2nd coach command the players place their hand (right or left) 2 inches above the parallel line below their eye.

Coaching point:

Flat back, head up, butt over the heal, minimal weight on the hand. Player should be able to lift their hand with out fall down.

FIRST STEP

Purpose:

To teach all six first steps that a linemen uses. Improve first step quickness.

Description:

Align in the grid. Run all the first step drill from a two point stance at first a slow speed.

When there coverable go to a three point stance and pick up the pace of the drill. you want quickness from this drill.

JAB STEP

Purpose:

To execute the proper first set on a gap block.

Description:

Align in the grid. On the coach command the player takes a six inch forward directional step, toe on the parallel line. Throw down hand back, punch threw with up hand.

Coaching point:

Throw the hand back, shoulders down, flat back, eyes looking threw the face mask at the target. Good base weight balanced (short step).

DRIVE STEP

Purpose:

To execute the proper step on a drive block (man on).

Description:

Align in the grid. On the coaches command player take forward directional step about 8 inches, his instep is on the parallel line. Throw down hand back, punch threw with the up hand.

Coaching point:

Hand must be back that keep shoulder down. Flat back, eyes looking threw the face mask at the target. Good base and weight balanced.

OPEN STEP

Purpose:

To execute the proper first step on these blocks. Down block, short trap or up on a backer (1st lb inside).

Description:

Align in the grid. On the coaches command player takes a 45 degree angled six inch step, toe on outer edge of the parallel line. Threw the down hand back, punch threw with the up hand.

Coaching point:

Hand back, shoulders down. Flat back, eyes looking threw the face mask at the target. Good base and weight balanced.

DROP STEP

Purpose:

To execute the proper first step on these blocks. long traps, hinge (pass block), the kick out part on the "X" block, also the fold block.

Description:

Align in the grid. On the coaches command the player take a 90 degree back step. Throw the down hand back, punch threw with the up hand. The drop foot heal is even with the set foot heal, at a 90 degree angle. The drop foot outside the parallel line of the grid.

Coaching point:

Hand back, shoulders down. Flat back, eyes looking threw the face mask at the target. Good base and weight is over the knees.

SLIDE STEP

Purpose:

To execute the proper first step on a reach block. Also, an outside release on a pass rout.

Description:

Align in the grid. On coach command player takes an eight inch side step to the outer edge of the grid.

Coaching point:

Keep shoulders square to the line of scrimmage, eyes on the target.
