Stats on a Blocked Punt
|
High School Football (California if that matters).
Line of scrimmage is the punting team's 25. The punt is blocked and the defensive player recovers the loose ball on the 10. I can see four possible stat options:
1) Blocked punt
2) Blocked punt + fumble recovery for 15 yds.
3) Blocked punt + punt return for 15 yds.
4) Blocked punt, punt for -10 yds, + punt return for 5 yds.
Which is it, or is there a 5th option?

Re: Stats on a Blocked Punt

I would put this down as a blocked punt, punt for -15 if there was no return.

Re: Stats on a Blocked Punt

Got the answer from Atlanta Blue. The winner is #3:
"Blocked punt of zero yards (charged to the team, not the punter)
Punt return credited to whoever blocked the punt of 15 yards
On the blocked punt, the punt is measured from the LOS. Since it didn't go backward on it's own, it is considered a punt for zero yards. Now, the ball is 15 yards behind the LOS, and those yards have to accounted for. The way it's done is to give the blocker those yards as punt return yards.
Blocked punts and fumbles create the most bizarre statitics of any in the game. While the NCAA rule on fumbles is pretty easy, the NFL rule is not. The rules explaining yardage on fumbles in the NFL take up SEVEN pages in the Statistician's Manual.
In the NFL, when the ball is loose on the ground, statisticians cringe."
Also found the NCAA statisticians manual online. The High School rule for Blocked Punts matches the NCAA.
Thank you AB
