Another rules question
|
On a passing play where the slot rec. goes out 3-4 yds and goes across the middle....how far can the RG go downfield and set a pick on the DB that's covering the slot rec?
The RG was very obvious that's what he was doing. He squared up to the DB and tried to block him and not just obstruct him.
The reason I'm asking is because he did this more than once and it was a designed play. I didn't think the OL could go downfield before the ball was released by the QB.

Re: Another rules question

All of this is predicated on the fact that the ball was thrown beyond the LOS. If it was thrown behind the LOS, (such as a screen or swing pass) the action of the RG is legal.
There is a term called the "expanded neutral zone" which is two yards either side of the football. So, 3-4 yards would be downfield. But, by blocking a defensive back that far downfield, he would also be guilty of offensive pass interference, which in NFHS includes a loss of down penalty.

Yes the pass was beyond the LOS. It was inteded for the DB was covering 3-4 yds beyond the LOS.
