Hennigar: Softball's Mark McGwire
|
I t's not so much the numbers he posts, as the threat he poses and the protection he provides.
Jody Hennigar is a legend in three different countries.
America, Canada, and New Zealand.
He is in the middle of everything that is right with fastpitch softball's best team, The Farm Tavern
of Madison, Wis.
It is not the number of home runs he posts. But it's the key times he blasts them.
His intimidation.
Pitchers see him coming to the plate, and right away, they're reaching for their bottles of ibuprofens.
They are buried next to their rosin bags on the mound.
The 6-foot-1, 240-pounder is a guy so strong that when he couldn't find a parking space for his Volkswagen one day, he just picked it up and carried it around with him.
He is so massive and harbors so much intimination for pitchers, it would take a bullet two days to pass through his tough hide.
Ask Loren Algar. . .
In the 1992 ASA Nationals at Bloomington, Ill., while playing for Clearwater, Hennigar cranked an ASA record three home runs against Algar, beating his Aurora, Ill., team.
Ask Chub Tangaroa. . .
At the 1992 International Softball Federation Tournament Championship game in Manila, Hennigar provided his own "Thrilla In Manila." His home run against Tangaroa, lifted his native Canada to the Gold Medal over New Zealand.
Ask Peter Meredith. . .
In the 1994 International Softball Congress Tournament at Prince Edward Island, Hennigar put the hurt on one of Meredith's rise-balls. Still, Meredith's team, Larry H. Miller Toyota, defeated Hennigar's team, The Farm Tavern.
While Hennigar strikes fear in other pitchers, this lefthander doesn't fear anyone when he pitches. He has all the pitches. He's crafty. He challenges everyone.
Hennigar has always been a winner. He has always been with winners.
He played many years in New Zealand. While playing for the Auckland United, and Auckland Metro teams, with his Farm Tavern teammate, Tim Wahl, Hennigar's made himself a legend. They led their teams to New Zealand National Championships.
In 1987 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, Hennigar's "wup ass" attitude led Teleconnect, Cedar Rapids, IA, to the ISC crown.
And, of course, last year in Victoria, his bat and arm helped lead The Farm to the team's first ISC Championship, dumping the host team, Legends, 11-2. Hennigar, along with Brian Martie, and Wahl proved to be to much arsenial for the Legends.
Recently, Hennigar opened a sports bar in Clearwater, Fl. Surely, this future ISC Hall of Famer would have enough of his own trophies to fill the place.
Hennigar has been named to the ISC All-World team four times, 1987, 1989, 1992, and of course, 1997. He is within an ISC record for grand slam home runs in a game. He has done that feat twice, 1986, with Saskatoon, and 1989, with Teleconnect. The ISC record is three times.
Last year, Hennigar's six RBI in the ISC Tournament came within one of the tourney record. And he has also pitched a no-hitter in the ISC for The Farm in 1991.
While he could peddle himself as a hired gun, Hennigar is very loyal to his Farm coach Rod Peterson. He is one of the major reasons why he and his Farm teammates have written on their backs the word: "Target."
Everybody's gunning for them.
In the last three years, the teams who have won the Pioneer Days Tournament have garnered the ISC Championship. Green Bay All-Car, Tampa Bay, and The Farm have won the Pioneer Days' crown.
This year, Hennigar hurled The Farm to a 2-1 victory over Tampa Bay in the Pioneer Days Tournament. Will that be an omen for Kimberly, Wis., this year?
Hennigar and company have made us believers.
Another thing, which adds to his personna, is that he's all business on the field. At times, he shows his emotion. Once he crosses those white-lines, you might get the idea that he's the general. A five-star one at that. The man in charge.
You have to beat him personally to conquer his teams. He wouldn't have any other way. You wouldn't have it any other way for this fastpitch softball legend.
While he is on the field, there is enough middle ground here to accommodate a credit card. It's his own personal torture chamber. There are no undecided votes. Because of his massive intimination, opponents love him or hate him.
You can't take your eyes off him. He even keeps his teammates wide-eyed.
That just adds to his personna of being a winner.
Whether he cranking one of his tape measure shots, or ringing up another batter with one his riseballs, you don't want to miss what this legend does on the field.
Off the field, there isn't a nicer guy. He has the warmth and dignity of your best friend.
His softball adventures will keep everyone facinated.
But that's no surprise. |

Fall Rising Stars
What a great weekend of softball. The combined team went 8-0-1 despite the typical Florida rain. Our pitchers did a great job, our defense made the plays, and our bats took care of the rest. We played some tough competition and showed that the Florida Ultimate is still alive and playing some great softball !!
Looking forward to Houston. Go Ultimate!
