Friday, March 7
FLK - is into its 10th year: Did you Know

FUTURE LADY KNIGHTS-DID YOU KNOW…..  FLK was started in order to help the girls that were going to go to Assumption learn the fundamentals of basketball, both individual & team skills, in a competitive program.  It is for those girls who intend to come to Assumption High School and is now a feeder program for Assumption.  FLK players are taught sportsmanship, discipline, responsibility, commitment and how to expect to win.
  • FLK is in its 11th year (2008-09).
  • FLK started in 1998-99 with three teams of about 30 girls (in 5th, 6th 7th grades).
  • By 2000, FLK had teams in each grade 3rd – 8th.
  • There have been over 90 girls in the FLK the past 2 years & one-three teams at each level (3rd – 8th).
  • Since 2000 the FLK 7th & 8th grade FLK teams have played over 900 games and won 70% of them.
  • Since 2000, two FLK teams qualified for the national AAU tournaments in Oklahoma or Florida.  FLK has won two national championship tournaments in Ohio and Illinois, and taken 2nd or 3rd place in three of the national tournaments.
  • No girl has been cut or left off a Future Lady Knights team.
  • Every player on the 2008-09 (and 2007-08) varsity team at Assumption came through the FLK.
  • Every girl, except one, on the varsity and sophomore teams for the past six years went through FLK.
  • In the five years before the Future Lady Knights players reached the varsity as juniors and seniors, the Assumption varsity teams had a total record of 65 wins – 47 losses.  In the past five years, since the Future Lady Knights players have been on the varsity as sophomores, juniors and seniors, the Assumption varsity record is 110 wins – 9 losses.
  • A girl in FLK has the opportunity to have skills camp and plays league games in 3rd grade.  Skills camps continue for 4th and 5th grade and there are league and tournament games.  Tournaments are played in 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade teams in Iowa and Illinois.  The 7th and 8th grade FLK teams also play summer ball and have traveled to summer tournaments in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Indiana and Ohio.
  • Girls in the FLK basketball program are also able and do soccer, swimming, softball, tennis, golf, track, volleyball, dance and cheerleading, band, music, & mock trial.  Many of the FLK girls are on the academic honor rolls of their respective schools.
  • All of the FLK girls go to Mass as a team when they are traveling at an out-of-town tournament
  • In 2008 the varsity players at Assumption - all former FLK players- went undefeated (27-0) and won the Iowa state championship, for the first time in school history.

General

Future Lady Knights is a nonprofit Iowa corporation that is organized and managed by a board of directors, some of whom are the original founders. It receives the advise of the Assumption varsity girls coach, who is on the board,  and the high schoolAD. It is formed as a feeder program for the girls who intend to go to Assumption High School, Davenport, Iowa. It is managed pursuant to Bylaws. The board has adopted policies, code of conduct and rules from time to time.
Girls in 3rd-5th grade may participate in skills camps that are run on the Saturday from October-February. Girls in 3th-8th grade may play in the league games on Sunday during Oct-Dec. each year.
League games are played by grade level for 3rd- 4th-5th-6th and possible for the 7th-8th grade. The teams are also entered in weekend tourneys in local or regional tourneys November-March (winter season). The Cost varies by age group and number of players on a team, but is estimated at $200-$300/player per team in 5th-8th grade for the winter season. The summer season is seperate. The FLK 7th & 8th grade teams may enter national or "aau" type tournaments.
Coaches efforts are a labor of love. They volunteer their time, and try to improve their coaching skills by periodically attending coaches clinics. Parents are very important to the teams success. They are asked to help with concessions, admissions, scorekeeping and other matters. Parent participation is needed at tournaments to assist with scorekeeping, car pooling, and for such things as web page articles, game photographing, and coaching.
Lower grade level teams practices 1-2 times per week. The players in the upper grades are asked to fully participate in 2-3 practices per week. Players are expected to practice individual skills at home.
The POLICIES and BYLAWS are on this web site under the "handout" section.
