BIG LEAGUE BASEBALL & SOFTBALL - FLORIDA DISTRICT 5 LITTLE LEAGUE

Florida District 5 Little League is now offering "Big League Baseball & Softball Divisions". The divisions provide activity for 15, 16, 17 and 18 year olds in the baseball program and 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 year olds in the softball program. Teams being formed will compete within the District, as well as with boarding Districts located in North Pinellas County, Pasco County, Hillsborough County and Manatee County. Registration for the two programs are now taking place and information may be obtained by emailing jliberaflda5@gmail.com.

CHALLENGER DIVISION - FLORIDA DISTRICT 5 LITTLE LEAGUE

Florida District 5 Little League offers a "Challenger Division" at Azalea Little League in St. Petersburg. The Challenger Division of Little League is a program for developmentally and physically challenged youth, helping them to enjoy the full benefits of Little League participation in an athletic environment structured to their abilities. More than the skills of baseball learned through the experience, the value of the Little League Challenger Division is found in the proven therapeutic and socialization of participating in sports; the strengthening of participants' self-esteem; the opportunities to mainstream into other divisions of play and the disciplines of teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play, which are hallmarks of the Little League program. The Little League Challenger Division provides the framework so Little League programs may offer a structured athletic activity for all youth in the community. Playing with the same equipment on the same fields, Challenger Division participants have the opportunity to experience the joys of pulling together as a team, being cheered and earning awards of their achievements.

Azalea Little League invites the developmentally and physically challenged youth in our community to come and enjoy the experience of our Challenger Division. You may contact Azalea Little League at www.eteamz.com/azalea or call 727-347-3325.

 2012 Urban Initiative Jamborees

In 2012, the state of Florida will be the first state to host an Urban Initiative Jamboree for the Little League Baseball Division (ages 9-12) AND the Little League Softball Division (ages 9-12), in the same city, on the same weekend, at the same complex!!!

Thanks to the Florida State District Administrators Association, who are sponsoring the softball Jamboree, we will be able to provide the Jamboree experience for our Urban Initiative baseball AND softball players in 2012.

The Jamborees will both take place over the weekend of May 4th – 6th, 2012, and all games will be played at Sid Lickton Park in Clearwater, FL.

Please mark your calendars because we hope to have one regular season team from each of your leagues participate in both of the Jamborees. Spread the word now to your board members, umpires, managers, coaches and parents. If you haven’t chartered Little League Softball in the past, this is the perfect year to start.

More event details will be mailed out to the league presidents and district administrators in early 2012. Thanks everyone and we look forward to seeing you all in 2012.

Little League Pitch Study Results

A five-year study, recently concluded by the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of North Carolina, found that the primary cause of arm injuries in youth baseball players was overuse. It also failed to show an increased risk of arm injury due to breaking pitches, such as curve balls.

“Some within the baseball community have advocated for a ban on curveballs,” Stephen D. Keener, President and Chief Executive Officer for Little League Baseball and Softball, said. “However, the study conclusions do not clearly support such a ban.

Help Wanted

1) Must wear heavy, cumbersome protective gear while working in the direct sunlight with temperatures in excess of 90 degrees.

2) You will have cylindrical metal and wooden objects swung within inches of your head while circular objects are thrown directly at you.

3) You will be required to stand perfectly still as this happens and not even blink. Especially not blink.

4) You will be struck, when you least expect it, by the circular objects and suffer multiple contusions during your term of employment.

5) You may be required to negotiate peace between two agitated parties.

6) Every decision you make will be evaluated and second-guessed by everyone. You will be required to make these decisions in a split second and have them analyzed for days by people who saw it better from a bad angle and further away than you were from the scene.

7) You may be required to do double-shifts on Saturdays.

8) You will be given water while you work (prisoners even get “bread with their water”).

Salary: A soda and hot dog, or if you did a really good job you may even get fries too.

Benefits: Just when you start to question “WHY” do I do this, you realize there is a reward program that is unavailable to anyone else. You get the best seat in the house at every Little League game you work, with a view of all the action right up front. You get to share the experience of a child’s first hit, the first time they score a run, their first home run and know that you are a vital part of making it all possible. The greatest dividend is the smile and thanks you will receive from the children who may not always show it, but respect and admire you for being there for them.

If this sounds like a job for you, then contact jliberaflda5@gmail.com and become one of the BLUE. Florida District 5 Little League Volunteer Umpire Crew wants YOU!
