ValleyCats' J.D. Martinez Wins NYPL Batting Title
JD Martinez
J.D. Martinez - NYPL Batiing Title Winner and 2006 FHS Graduate
TROY, N.Y. - Tri-City ValleyCats outfielder J.D. Martinez joined the team on July 12. On Sunday, the final game of the 2009 season for the ValleyCats, Martinez collected one hit in three at-bats to earn him the New York-Penn League batting title with a .326 average.

Martinez, 22, qualified for the league batting title on Saturday after earning enough plate appearances. (Players must have 2.7 plate appearances per team game). Martinez contributed 61 hits in 53 games for the ValleyCats. The outfielder from Florida also tied for the team lead and third in the league with seven home runs. Martinez outlasted Auburn's Sean Ochinko who finished with a .324 batting average.

Martinez was drafted in the 20th round of the 2009 MLB Draft from Nova Southeastern University. Martinez began his professional career with the Houston Astros rookie league affiliate Greeneville, but lasted just 19 games before being called up. Martinez hit .403 with Greeneville with five home runs and 23 RBI.

No stranger to New York's Capital Region, Martinez played for the Saratoga Phillies in the summer of 2008. In 25 games for the New York Collegiate Baseball team, Martinez led the Phillies with a .392 batting average and seven home runs.

Rolando Gomez - Arizona Angels (Rookie League) Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

The Angels signed Flanagan High (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) shortstop Rolando Gomez on July 31 for $450,000, the fourth-highest bonus known to be given to a player drafted after the 10th round this year.

Gomez is a small (5'7", 145 lbs.) yet strong shortstop who has drawn comparisons to Rafael Furcal. He’s a lefthanded hitter with plus speed and some pop. While he’s a smooth fielder, some scouts wonder if his arm is better suited for second base. A cousin of former all-star shortstop Tony Fernandez.

Mike Napoli - Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
