We are still organizing the format, here are a few bits of information. Girls from 8 to 14 can sign up. Every girl participates. Our budget right now is $85.00 per month. Cost will depend on participation. One Saturday a month they will play an informal tournament. Two excellent coaches will teach basic skills, court rotation and concept of team play. We have had an overwhelming response to this program and we are very excited. This is an excellent way to introduce your daughter into the sport. Nation wide the trend is for girls to move from soccer, swimming and basketball to volleyball. This program will prepare them for future club team play and J.V. play with their high school teams. Thursday, October 30 Look at where some of FJVC girls have gone with their volleyball ---
Emily Mohrman - UNC Wilmington
Sara Tighe - Mary Washington Monday, January 14 Do's and Don'ts for Big Tournaments I wanted to give a list of Do's and Don'ts ecspecially for the new parents.
One day tournament have about the same rules as large multi day ones. A few pointers for U Turn. /the signs say no coolers allowed, but they will let you bring in food for the "girls" and set up along the wall of the tennis courts. This is the only area they allow us to use so first come first serve. They have bleachers but would reccomend bringing a comfortable bag chair. Thay also have a cafe' that has pretty good food. Last week end travel time was one hour and seven minutes from 610 and 95. The facility opens up at eight oclock. Coaches will want the girls at the court they start on one hour before their scheduled start. Be sure the girls get a good nights sleep. Typically the girls will play a three game match, rest a three game match and ref. a three game match. This cycle will continue all day in no particular order. The girls need to know they should hang together as a team all day. Fast food is a no no, Subway is always a safe choice, it is located in the food court. Apples are off limits, they take way too long to digest, of course you want to limit the sugar intake. The best snack you can provide is celery and peanut butter. Last year at many tournaments our girls did not eat a heavey lunch and just snacked, it made a difference. Remember it is immpossible to hydrate your daughter at practice and tournaments they must arrive hydrated, intake at practice and tournaments simply maintains, it cannot provide recovery. Be sure your daughter pounds the water the night before and morning of. No coffee or cafeine. It produces highs and lows that will effect your daughter play. The girls will learn very quick at the tournaments that being in good condition can win many matches. The coach will have a first Aid kit. At large tournaments they also have a staffed EMT station with bandages and ice. Lets hope we can stay away from it. The most common injury at tournaments is twisted ankles from shoes being untied or tied too loose. At large tournaments you do not need to bring a chair they will be provided on the sidelines yea!!!!!. Remember Encourage but DO NOT direct your daughter, directing is the coaches job. For the new girls the big tournaments can be intimdating, whistles are blowing everywhere, if they are not sure they should keep playing. We lost our first two matches last year mainly because of the distraction. don't worry they learn quickly to tune it out. The girls will set up camp on the outer ring of the convention center, They will leave their bags and snacks at the camp site. Some girls also bring a blanket, Volleyball blankets, shirts, pants and on and on are for sale. Be ready to spend a few bucks on at least a T shirt comemerating the event. Specific tournament information ie: start times, court numbers and pool play should be made public by Thursday afternoon. Your coach will advise you of where and when, if you are not used to pool play just go with the flow it takes awhile to get the hang of it.
