American College of Sports Medicine Guidelines for proper hydration..... - Drink at least 16 ounces of water (or other fluid) 2 hours before a competition - Top off by drinking 8 to 16 ounces of water 15 minutes before a competition - Drink 5 to 10 ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes of exercise (regardless of thirst). Use a sports beverage if the exercise is more than 60 minutes. - Drink as much as possible within 15 minutes of the end of a competition or exercise. - Continue to drink after a competition to replace lost fluids. It takes at least 16 ounces to replace every pound lost during practice or competition. This should be easy to follow as it pertains to practices. With regard to tournaments athletes should be aware of their play schedule. If the play schedule is for more than 60 minutes then a sports drink or 1/2 water and 1/2 sports drink should be consumed. Regardless of the way the day is spaced, carbohydrates should be consumed between matches.
