Fire Hawks Win Championship!

November 20, 2005 Pequannock NJ -   The Pequannock Fire Hawks 15u baseball team went undefeated on the 2005 fall season, winning the 15u championship.

While many kids play football and soccer in the fall this group of boys play baseball. Outscoring their opponents by a 54 run margin (pf 103, pa 49) the first place Fire Hawks won their division in a rare twist of faith. After tying the Elmwood Park baseball team @ 13 after 9 innings of play while switching up for the 10th inning of play the umpires called the game, on time.   This infuriated the Elmwood Park and Pequannock’s coach Maloney. “Championship games are not suppose to end in a tie” said Maloney. Follow-up conversations proved fruitless to play another baseball game and the Elmwood Park team conceded the championship to the Pequannock team. “This is not the way it was suppose to end” said Maloney “Our teams players would have preferred to battle each other until a winner was declared.”

Friction ran high in the Championship game as Pequannock caught the Elmwood Park team bringing in non-rostered players and midway through the game catcher Carlos Santiago noticed the Elmwood park team using light weight, illegal division weight bats. Both teams battled through the 6th ,7th, 8th and 9th innings. With the score see-sawing while both coaches kids took to the mound, Steepy (EP) and Ryan Maloney (Peq.)   All the while Coach Maloney kept plating home runners.

Earlier in June of this year Ryan Maloney, now a freshman at PTHS, pitched his then PV Middle School baseball team to the Morris County Championship win. In the Fall it was the Fire Hawks, Ryan Maloney, (1b p (655 bat avg,)) batting in the third position had a team record 8 RBI’s on the day. Kevin Stasiak, (p of 1b (727 bat avg,)) was the leadoff batter, Dylan Small (cf, (bat 345)) batting last and Billy Westdyk (cf, utl(bat 526,)) batting second were perfect at the plate, each scoring three times each. Of the fifteen players on the team these players proved to spark a catalyst for the championship game.

When asked who his key players were Maloney stated “All my players are key to the success of the team.” The Fire Hawks have good players and a strong line up. The teams roster consists of; Sha’Born Armstrong, Joey DiFranco, Ryan Egan, Shawn Connor, John Chorba, Ryan Maloney, Andrew Walter, Kevin Stasiak, Carlos Santiago, Dylan Small, Tom Staiano, James Jurewicz, Chris Miller, Billy Westdyk and Chuck LaPorta. NJ Fire Hawks Semifinals
November 2004- The Pequannock Fire Hawks Baseball team earned the right to play the number one seed team in the Red Hawk 14u division, Rutherford Rebels, by successfully beating the forth seed team ,NJ Bulldogs, by a score of 4 to 3, in Moonachie, NJ, this past weekend. The Fire Hawks jumped to a quick 2 – 0 leed with a leed off single by Jamil Goodwin followed by RBI singles from Ryan Maloney and Chris Miller. They held the lead through the bottom of the forth inning. The NJ Bulldogs fought back to tie it up in the bottom of the forth inning and pushed a run across the plate on a safety squeeze play later in the sixth inning. With the score now 3 to 2 the Fire Hawks took advantage of the batter, Sha’Born Armstrong, being hit by a pitch to put the tying run on base. Chris Miller hit a line drive up the middle to score Sha’Born Armstrong to tie the game. Chris then stole second base and took advantage of a series of throwing and fielding errors by the NJ Bulldogs shortstop and center fielder to score the go ahead run. Closer Ryan Maloney picked up 3 K’s in the bottom of the seventh to close it out for the Fire Hawks and pick up the save.

The Fire Hawks were backed by a solid starting pitching performance by Mike D’Amato (3 inn), combined with relief pitching by Andrew Dittamo (3 inn) and closer Ryan Maloney (1 inning.) Coach Santiago and Maloney stated after the game that they felt confident their Fire Hawks team would win the game. "This is a scrappy team of players that love to play baseball and mix it up," stated team manager Rich Maloney. We look forward to playing the Rutherford Rebels this Sunday in the semifinals.

The Fire Hawks went 6W and 5L for the season went on to play the Rutherford Rebels in the semifinal round but lost by a score of 11 to 7. Key hits for the Fire Hawks were made by Kevin Stasiak who went 2 for 3 and scored 2 runs. Ryan Maloney who had a 2 RBI Home Run in the third inning and Chris Miller who also went 2 for three and picked up an RBI. Mike D’Amato also contributed to the mix going 2 for 3 with a walk.

Pequannock Fire Hawks Semi Finals
c300.jpg
2003 13u Red Hawk Semi Finals
The "Pequannock Fire Hawks" baseball team managed by Rich Maloney and coach Blynn Jennings played in the Semi-Final round of baseball this past weekend. The Fire Hawks who previously defeated Pompton Lakes by a score of 8 to 4 to win round one of playoffs, went on to win round two of the playoffs by a score of 11 to 8 over Palisades Park. The Fire Hawks powered by the bats of Brian DeYoung 483 average, Ryan Maloney 386 average, Dylan Small 382 average, Don Anderson 343 average and Chris Miller 308 average over powered many of their opponents this season.

"This team is for real" stated team manager" Rich Maloney, "every player has great potential when they put their minds to it." Coach Bylnn Jennings and Rich Maloney have turned around this team this season. One player commented that when the Fire Hawks work together they are a tough team to beat. Each player is a tough out. The Fire Hawks again hope to rebuild the team next year to be even more competitive. The Fire Hawks are looking to compete in the Spring Red Hawk League 14u and hopes to compete as a 15u team next fall. The team likes to hit against fast pitchers and they feel the 14u may not provide the challenge they desire for the 2004 fall season.

The Fire Hawks season ended when Rutherford eliminated them in the semi final round of the playoffs. Follow along with the Pequannock Fire Hawk on their web site. WWW.eteamz.com/FIREHAWKS or search Yahoo for the character string "Pequannock Fire Hawks"

“Yesterday’s Heroes” Ball Park Café
Yesterdaysheroes
You would be amazed at the baseball sports memorabilia at “Yesterday’s Heroes” Ball Park Café. Located at the base of the Atlas Hotel in Cape May New Jersey, the Ball Park Café is a sports bar that offers reasonable priced food service for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as a bit of sports history. There is also a bar in the back, which offers a tavern type atmosphere for watching sports on their big screen tv. The café itself has many TV’s scattered around for your viewing pleasure. However, beware this is not Yankee, Mets or Giants territory. You have to love the Philly’s and the Eagles to be considered a local down here.

This is the only café in the world where you can actually grip a game bat used by Babe Ruth, Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa. Yes, I said it correctly actual game bats used by the ball players are on display for you to touch a piece of history. When you grip the bats you can almost hear the crack of the bat as it hits the ball. My kids Ryan, Jason and Cara were amazed the owner let you handle the bats.

The café is open in the winter months on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There is a wealth of game bats, signed Jerseys, baseballs, gloves and other collectable items from a variety of baseball teams including the Yankees. Many items have been on loan to the Baseball Hall of Fame in prior years.

The owner loves baseball and collects many items. I found one of the most interesting items on my last visit just this past weekend, Saturday December 28, 2002. I knew the cafe had a life like full-size statue of Babe Ruth just to the right as you enter the café. What I did not know was it was not a statue but an actual animated Babe Ruth. The Babe, dressed in a Yankee team uniform is leaning against his bat, his eyes move, his head turns and looks all around the Café. I thought I was seeing things at first, until I spoke with the waitress. She informed us that the Babe Ruth doll as she called it was her bosses pride and joy. Not only did the animated life like Babe Ruth look around, he was programmed to sing the song “Take me out to the Ball Game”. If you ever visit the Jersey Shore and you are a baseball fanatic, stop by the “Yesterday’s Heroes” Ball Park Café for a bite to eat and soak up the atmosphere. You won’t be disappointed.

Saturday, February 1
Academy of Proplayers - Baseball Factory

After spending the first of 2 months of training at the Academy of Proplayers in Garfield New Jersey I can honestly say there may not be a better place to stay conditioned during the Winter off season. The brothers Gilligan, along with Bob Frassa and Kris Totten run a fantastic winter baseball camp. If you need extra practice or just need to sharpen your skills, this is the place to go. Ryan just loved the camp and can’t wait until the second camp begins on February 2nd.

Private lessons are available all year-round. I have observed quite a few batting lessons, both baseball and softball, when I took my daughter Cara for batting lessons this past January. The staff is sensational and the value is well worth the money.
