Saturday-Cerritos, CA.

Sunday - Lakewood, CA

We took second in our pool with wins over the
Renegades and Semi Valley Rampage but lost to Sparks.

In the first round of brackets we lost to Dynasty and were eliminated from
the tournament.

In the Renegade game
Erin Kelly pitched a 1 hitter for the win, Rhonda Ciminesi pick up two
hits including her first double of the season along with 2 RBI's, Lolly
Stewarts sacrifice fly in the fifth produced another run.

The Sparks game was a tough loss,
Rachael Bermudez pitched a 1 hitter and came up short as Sparks got an
unearned run to win the game.

The Semi Valley Rampage game was truly awesome.
Erin Kelly pitching her second game of the day saving her best for last,
pitched another 1 hitter. Her only difficult inning came in the top half
of the third issuing a lead off walk, the runner was sacrificed to second
but was thrown out at the plate by Rhonda Ciminesi on a liner to right,
Erin retired the next batter on a come backer and a throw to first. Our
run came in bottom of the fourth with Blaire Brown singling to left, moving
to second on a pass ball and scoring on Rhonda Ciminesi's second double
of the day. Blair was tough at the plate this game going 2 for 3 with an
earlier double.

Our first bracket game was a tough lose to
Dynasty,
Kristina Harvin pitched a great game
giving up only 3 hits in the losing effort. We had runners in scoring position
in almost every inning but could not get the timely hit we needed to put
the game away. In this game both Desirie Jimenez and Kristina went 2-3.

Our opening game was a tuff draw, Faith is
a premier team and a tuff opponent. We were able to score in the bottom

Game Two:

So Cal Filly's vs So Cal Diamonds; Filly's

Highlights:

Game two started easy enough with us taking
the lead in the second inning. In that inning Katie King led off with a
single and Blaire Brown promptly doubled her home. The Diamonds scored
two in the bottom of the fourth on a walk and an error. The game remained
with us down by one until our last at bat in the top of seven. Erin Kelly
singled to start the inning, Deserie Jimenez and Rhonda Ciminesi followed
with consecutive walks and Katie King with bases loaded singled to score
Erin from third. Blaire Brown popped one up to invoke the infield fly rule,
when the ball was misplayed we were able to score Deserie from third for

Game Four:

So Cal Filly's vs No Cal Tremors; Filly's
4-2 ( 14 innings)

Highlights:

This was an awesome game the Tremors are an
outstanding team, it was all we could do to pull this one out in the fourteenth
inning, in a game that lasted over three hours. Our first game of the day
was at 9:00 in the morning, this Tremor game started at 9:00 p.m. and ended
after midnight. When the game ended we had been at the field for over sixteen
hours. I'm telling you it doesn't get any better than this! I had a good
feeling about the outcome when in the twelfth inning I could see Terry
Brown walking around in a large plastic bag with head and arm holes cut
into it exclaiming to everyone that the game was in the bag. Erin Kelly
started the game, her second of the day, and the teams fourth game. Erin
pitched the first seven innings allowing one run while striking out eight
and giving up three hits. Our first run came in the sixth when Katie King
doubled and two batters later Kristina Harvin singled getting an RBI tying
up the game. In the top of the eighth (which was the first inning the international
tiebreaker was used) with Erin on second Deserie Jiminez sacrificed Erin
to third. Two batters later Katie King singled Erin home. But in the bottom
half of the inning the Tremors were able to push one across to tie it back
up at two. The game remained tied until the fourteenth when Rhonda scored
on an errant throw to third allowing Katie who had just bunted to take
third on some aggressive base running. Kristina followed hitting into a
fielder's choice, the throw was late at the plate and Katie was able to
score. Kristina Harvin came in to relieve Erin in the top of eighth and
pitch what amounted to her second game of the day. Kristina pitched a three
hitter in relief of Erin while striking out eight.

Game Five:

Cal Heat vs So Cal Filly's: Filly's 1-0

Highlights:

In our first game Sunday we ran smack into
Heat from Lakewood. They are a scrappy team that played us tuff. Rachael
Bermudez pitched this game accounting for 12 strikeouts giving up four
hits for the win. Our lone run came in the bottom of the seventh when Blaire
Brown singled to lead off the inning. The next two batters drew walks loading
the bases. With two outs Erin Kelly hit the first pitch hard it was knocked
down in the infield but the defense was unable to make an out. Blaire scored
from third ending the game.

Game Six:

So Cal Riptides vs So Cal Filly's; Riptides
3-0

Highlights:

This game found us playing the only other
team in the tournament that was undefeated. Riptide is a great team with
some big guns, they are tough one through nine in the batting order. They
jumped on us early for three runs in the top of the first. On this day
we were unable to mount much of an attack, our lone hit came in the fourth
when Rhonda Ciminesi singled. Kristina Harvin and Rachael Bermudez combine
to pitch a 4 hitter while striking out 8 batters.

Game Seven:

Cal Heat vs So Cal Filly's: Filly's 2-0

Highlights:

With our loss to Riptide we dropped into the
losers bracket only to find Heat working their way back. To get another
shot at Riptide we would first have to beat Heat for a second time. Erin
Kelly got the start and the victory as she pitched a complete game 4 hitter.
We did not get our offense started until the sixth when Rhonda Ciminesi
lead off the inning by getting on base on an error. Katie King and Blaire
Brown followed with consecutive singles Blaire's single scored Rhonda from
third. Two outs later Lori Mapes followed with a single that scored Blaire.
The big bat in this game belonged to Katie King who was 2-2 with a walk

Game Eight:

Riptides vs So Cal Filly's; Filly's 4-2

Highlights:

Riptide jumped out ahead by getting 2 in the
third. We were able to answer them with 1 in the fourth but went ahead
with 3 in the fifth. In this game we were able to muster 8 hits, 2 by Kristina
Harvin who also got 2 RBI's, Blaire Brown's sacrifice fly netted her an
RBI. Rachael Bermudez pitched the complete game for the victory.

Game Nine:

Riptides vs So Cal Filly's; Riptide 3-0

Highlights:

By winning the previous game we have pushed
Riptide to the IF game. The winner going to the ASA Nationals. We started
Rachael Bermudez and went to Erin in the fourth. Riptide got a run in the
second and two in the fifth when our defense had a let down. Our defense
was great the entire weekend they played with courage and a lot of heart.
I could ask no more from them, for they gave it there all. I later found
out Riptide had only lost 4 games this year at least we laid one loss on
them….

Double
Hitter Against South Carolina Dynamite

July 6, 1999

We were invited by Cynthia Poe from the Southridge
Sonics to come over and play a practice game against a team from South
Carolina called Dynamite. We just finished two great weekends playing in
some tough tournaments and did not expect to get whooped. A whooping is
what we got, but we had fun and we were glad we attended; it was fun playing
a team from the east coast. The coaches and players were really nice; who
knows maybe we will run into them sometime in the future.

Artesia Punishers
Summer Slam

Artesia Park, Artesia, CA

July 16-18, 1999

Record 2-2-1

We started slowly in pool play taking 3rd after the tie
breaker format was put into play. However on Sunday we put it together
and played the kind of ball we are capable playing. Eventually losing to
Crunch who ended up winning the tournament.

Game One:

Artesia Punishers vs So Cal Filly's;
   Tie Ball Game 0-0

Highlights:

Erin Kelly started the game and
gave up only two hits but we were unable to generate any offense and the
game ended in a tie.

Game Two:

So Cal Filly's vs Santa Maria Express;
Filly's 2-0

Highlights:

Kristina Harvin got the nod in
this game and with a little help from our offense she also got the win.
Our bats woke up a little in this game with Lori Mapes and Rhonda Ciminesi
both collecting two hits each. Kristina herself was able to get us started
with an RBI in the 4th inning. Rhonda had singled and been worked around
to third where she was able to score when Kristina drove one into right;
the only play the right fielder had was at first allowing the run to score.
We were able to get an unearned run in the next inning, with good defense
that was all we were to need.

Game Three:

So Cal Fury vs So Cal Filly's;
Fury 3-1

Highlights:

Erin Kelly got the start in this
game and pitched a great game; allowing three hits and striking out seven.
This was a tough loss all three of the runs Fury scored were unearned,
we are generally a team that gives up very few runs, for us to give up
three was really a shock. Our lone run came in the 2nd when Blaire Brown
and Kristina Harvin singled and Jessica Young drew a walk to load the bases.
With one out Lori Mapes hit into a fielder's choice Blaire hot footing
it from third was able to beat the throw to the plate for the score. Blaire
had the hot stick going 2-3 while scoring our only run.

Game Four:

So Cal Filly's vs Las Vegas Stars;
Filly's 1-0

Highlights:

The Stars are an awesome team and
we knew it. We would have to put together a balanced attack. Our defense,
pitching and offense was going to have to step up to get the job done.
Kristina Harvin started and did the job throwing a four hitter. Our defense
was flawless sparkling plays were turned in from various players. Our only
hit came from Katie King leading off the second with a single. Kristina
Harvin promptly sacrificed Katie to second. Lolly Stewart followed Kristina
with a shot back up the middle; in an attempt to throw her out at first
the ball was launched down the right field line allowing Katie to score
for the only run of the game.

Game Five:

So Cal Filly's vs So Cal Crunch;
   Crunch 1-0

Highlights: Ferni's Crunch team
is always a tough competitor and this game would hold true to forum. At
the end of regulation play neither team had been able score Erin Kelly
pitching for us allowed only four hits the entire game. In the second international
tie breaker Crunch was able to score without the benefit of a hit. Their
runner on second was sacrificed to third and a fly ball to right scored
the runner from third. We generated enough offense we just could not get
the timely hit when we needed it. Our big bats in this game were Katie
King and Blaire Brown each going 2-4, Lolly Stewart went 2-3.

So Cal Filly’s
Finish Fourth in Triple Crown World Series in Colorado

Steam Boat Springs, Colorado

August 10-15, 1999

Record 5-3-1

The Triple Crown World Series was the tournament
we ended a very successful season with. It was held in Steam Boat Springs,
Colorado. I don’t believe I would have packed up my family and driven 16
hours to vacation in Steamboat Springs in the summer, it was something
I probably wouldn’t have thought of. But since we were able to win a qualifying
tournament for the event, we decided to make the trip. A number of things
come to mind about our trip, one such thing was how beautiful it is in
Colorado. Others are the green rolling hills, deer everywhere, clear blue
skies with an occasional sprinkle, 80 to 85 degrees during the day cooling
off to about 60 at night.

The tournament and the pageantry that goes
along with it were unforgettable. Arriving early on August 10th, we were
able to participate in the skills contests the first of which was the base
running contest. Our base running team consisted of Erin Kelly, Katie King,
Jodi Basaldua, Monique Hernandez and Lolly Stewart. Although we did not
win the contest Erin was able to finish third with a time of 12.33 home
to home the winning time was 12.29. Next was an infield drill call slickest
infield (where you are timed while throwing the ball around the horn) we
entered more than one team in this event. The team of Jessica Young, Kristina
Harvin, Lori Mapes, Deserie Jimenez and Katie King proved to be a formidable
opponent taking second place in this event with a time of 6.94 the winning
time was 6.92. The third event was speed throw/target throw again we entered
more than one team in this event. Although the girls competed as a team
they were judged on an individual basis. Erin Kelly won the accuracy part
of the contest with a score of 33 which was almost 10 points higher then
the second place finisher. On to longball where you have the opportunity
to hit off of a machine where they tabulate score based on distance. This
was the only event I was disappointed in the machine threw so bad it became
a matter of waiting for something you could hit with most girls eventually
saying forget it and swinging at whatever came their way. I would have
liked it better if the machine was set up to groove the ball. This would
have allowed the girls an opportunity to hit the towering shots which as
a spectator I would much rather have seen.

We had a good time at opening ceremonies.
While we were gathering in the staging area it gave me an opportunity to
see so many familiar faces. Some of those faces I hadn’t seen for quite
sometime. It was good to see Ashley Barthel, she now lives in Texas and
plays with the Stars, I forgot to ask if Nicole was still playing and what
college she was attending.

We played nine games in the Triple Crown.
In our pool we placed second behind Enchantment from New Mexico who eventually
won the tournament. San Diego Power placed third, Heartland Hearts from
Illinois and Inland Dynasty rounded out the field. With the top three teams
moving on to double elimination the rest to single elimination.

Game 1:

Heartland Hearts vs So Cal Filly’s:   Filly’s
7-5

Highlights: I don’t know whether it was the
thinner air or a livelier ball but we were able to generate 11 hits, Hearts
also put the aluminum to work getting 7 hits. Eighteen hits in a game is
certainly a first for us. Rachael Bermudez started the game and pitched
four complete innings getting 8 strikeouts along the way. Erin Kelly finished
the game allowing only 1 run on 1 hit. We picked up 4 runs in our half
of the first when Erin lead off with a single, Rhonda Ciminesi hit into
a fielder’s choice the throw to second was not in time to get Erin who
was hustling from first. For all of you that were there to see this game
this is when I called time and went to do some pin trading with the base
umpire. Katie King followed Rhonda with a single that loaded the bases.
A pass ball scored Erin from third while Blaire Brown drew a walk to load
the bases again. Lori Mapes hit a 1-2 pitch hard up the middle scoring
Rhonda and Katie. Lolly Stewart promptly stepped up and hit the first pitch
to score Blaire from third. We scored again in the third when Katie hit
the first pitch of the inning deep to left for a triple, she scored when
Lori doubled, Katie was Lori’s third RBI of the game. In the fourth Monique
Hernandez lead off with a single Deserie Jimenez walked and both scored
on a double by Rhonda.

The big bats in this game belonged to; Katie
with a triple, Rhonda and Lori with doubles. Erin, Katie, Lori and Lolly
ended the day going 2-3.

I don’t think I will forget how good Hearts
shortstop Megan was she could do it all. Hit for power or just put it in
play when she got behind it didn’t matter, she just got the job done. Hearts
second basemen Sarah had an equally big bat smacking a triple in the third.
Both were excellent defensive players, they made Hearts middle infield
tough.

Game 2:

So Cal Filly’s vs New Mexico Enchantment:
Enchantment 3-1

Highlights: This was a frustrating game we
are a better team than the team that showed up to play. We gathered 7 hits,
which is generally enough to win but not today. We played tight defensively
making mistakes we don’t normally make. Our lone run came in the second
when Blaire Brown singled, took second on a pass ball and scored when Lori
Mapes single in the gap in right center. Monique Hernandez tripled in the
fifth, this was our only extra base hit in the game. Enchantment played
together as a team they are well coached and you get few breaks against
them. You will have to beat them they don’t give up easy runs. Their pitching
is good and the team is scrappy I didn’t think they had a lot of power
they just put the ball in play. Enchantment went on to win the tournament,
they played well and deserved it.

Game 3:

Inland Dynasty vs So Cal Filly’s:
Filly’s 5-1

Highlights: Erin Kelly got the nod in this
game and pitched a complete game allowing only 2 hits while giving up only
one unearned run. We scored our first run in the Bottom of the third when
Erin lead off with a single, Deserie Jimenez sacrificed her to second and
Blaire Brown singled her home. In the 5th we scored four times to break
the game open, Rhonda Ciminesi and Blaire both drew walks setting it up
for Kristina Harvin who took the count full and drove one deep to left
center for a double scoring Rhonda and Blaire. Lori Mapes Stepped up next
and hit the first pitch down the left field line for a double scoring Kristina.
Jodi Basaldua followed with a single scoring Lori from second. It was nice
to see Dave Roeder up in Colorado his team is young and getting playoff
experience. He will be tough in the future.

Game 4:

So Cal Filly’s vs San Diego Power:   Tie
0-0

Highlights: Rachael Bermudez started the game
and was able to hold Power’s big bats to just 3 hits while getting 6 strikeouts.
It became a defensive game quickly with Erin Kelly using her wheels in
center to make some nice running catches. Power is an awesome team and
I felt good to play them even up; although a win would have allowed me
to stay at the hotel instead of sitting out on the field that afternoon
waiting to see what place we were to take in our pool.

Game 5:

So Cal Filly’s vs Simi Valley Rampage:   Filly’s
6-3

Highlights: We generated a 12 hit attack,
which accounted for 6 runs and Erin Kelly went the distance for the win.
Deserie Jimenez had a career day at the plate going 3-3 she also put down
a nice bunt for a sacrifice and finished with an RBI. Katie King and Blaire
Brown mirrored each other with 2 hits in 4 at bats, each accounting for
1 RBI, the only difference was Katie in her first at bat doubled; Blaire
in her last at bat tripled. Monique Hernandez was impressive going 2-3,
scoring 2 runs herself, she clubbed a triple in her last at bat. Simi Valley’s
center fielder (#7 White) had a great game and touched them all in the
4th I can take nothing away from her she belted it. Second basemen (#27
Liavel) had a good game going 2-3.

Game 6:

So Cal Filly’s vs Chula Vista’s Elite:   Filly’s
8-1

Highlights: Back to back 12 hit games gives
us a victory and a break between games. Rachael Bermudez picked up the
win allowing only 3 hits. Lori Mapes commonly known as pocket Hercules
went 3-3, she also picked up 2 RBI’s. Rhonda Ciminesi went 2-4 with an
RBI. Katie King went 2-4 and Blaire Brown’s lone hit in the 5th was a monster
triple that netted her 2 RBI’s. Monique Hernandez came up in the 4th with
runners on and doubled in gap picking up 2 RBI’s.

Game 7:

San Diego Power vs So Cal Filly’s:   Power
4-1

Highlights: Rachael Bermudez pitched 5 2/3
innings before giving way to Erin Kelly who finished the game. We allowed
5 hits, this to a team that makes a living out of hitting the ball. Our
defense, which is generally pretty solid, was a little soft in the early
part of the game, allowing two unearned runs in the first. We like Power
were able to get 5 hits but they were spread out and we could not capitalize
on them.

Game 8:

Simi Valley Rampage vs So Cal Filly’s:   Filly’s
7-4

Highlights: Losing to Power dropped us into
the losers’ bracket for us to get a shot at the championship game we would
have to beat Rampage for a second time. Kristina Harvin started the game
and pitched into the 5th before giving way to Erin Kelly who finished the
game. We were able to collect 10 hits for our 7 runs the big inning coming

Game 9:

Da Bomb vs So Cal Filly’s:   Da
Bomb 11-4

Highlights: This was a tough game for us we
were one of only four teams left in the tournament. We would have to play
without Deserie Jimenez who had injured her leg the night before. Early
in the game Lori Mapes in a close play at second was injured and gave way
to a substitute. In the first inning Rhonda Ciminesi doubled and was singled
home by Katie King. In our half of the sixth Blaire Brown tripled hitting
a shot over the left fielders head. With Blaire on third Kristina Harvin
singled picking up the RBI, Lolly Stewart doubled to score Kristina picking
up the RBI. Erin Kelly with two outs and Lolly still at second singled
scoring Lolly for the RBI. Da Bomb knocked us out of the tournament; we
accepted our fourth place trophy and headed for home.
