STATE wins Spring 2015 Championship!

ARLINGTON- This Spring's final featured the #4 seeded State versus the #2 seed Huskies.  Huskies used a miraculous comback versus Funky Fresh in the semis to get to the final while State dismantled a short-handed Viva La Hoop in the other semi-final.

In the championship game, Kyle Lussier came out firing, scoring the game's first 7 points and propelling State to a quick 13-0 advantage.  After a deep three by Tom Henneberry got the Huskies on the board, State went back on the attack, feeding Timmy Graham downlow to the tune of 12 first half points.  With State up 30-19 at the half, the Huskies needed some urgency to get back into the game.  State would have no part of that, with Colin London and Jeff Kozik combining for 21 second half points while State put the pedal to the floor in a 71-42 romp.  Graham led all scorers with 22 points, Lussier 14, Kozik & London 13 with Mike Woods, Shane Perrault & Jon Evans getting 4 each.  This is State's second consecutive Spring League championship, congrats men!

Congratulations to the Gunners, 2014-15 Winter League Champs

The Gunners took down State, 62-58 in a wild, back and forth affair last night in the Fi-Ho gym.  The Gunners raced out to a 14-5 lead behind the shooting of Taurean Marshall and inside play of Mo Bitahi.  State started to chip away, attacking the offensive glass with Tim Graham and Jeff Kozik doing a lot of the damage.  At the half, the Gunner lead was erased and State had built a 37-29 advantage.

In the second half, State pushed the gas pedal and raced out to a 20 point lead.  Mike Woods buried three consecutive triples and the Gunners looked to be on the ropes.  The intensity in the gym raised a few levels and it looked like the game may get out of hand, but cooler heads prevailed and play resumed.  The Gunners defense, led by forwards Sam Johnson and Tim Daly did a great job eliminating State's second chance points and Gang Gold slowly started chipping into the State lead.  With the lead all the way down to 3, Jeff Kozik stepped up and nailed a huge three pointer for State bumping the margin back up to 6.  Mike Woods answered with a floater in the lane, State seemed to be back in control up 8 with less than four minutes to play.  The Gunners didn't sink their heads, just kept battling and when Taurean Marshall found Sam Johnson with a slick bounce pass, the comeback was complete and the Gunners led by 2 with 20 seconds remaining.  An administrative technical on State for excessive timeouts followed but the Gunners only made 1 of 2 free throws and turned the ball over on the ensuing possession.  Jeff Kozik rose up for the game tying 3 but the ball bounced off the rim multiple times and snuck out.  A Gunner free throw finished off the scoring and the Gunners emerged victorious in a grinding but classic men's league final.

Gunners- 62- Taurean 20, Sam 16, Tim 14, Mo 8, blue shirt 4

State- 58- Jeff 21, Tim 15, Mike 11, Sabbagh 6, Jon 5

Gunners win 2014 Fall Session

The Gunners completed a great Fall League run with a 78-61 win over the Huskies in the Finals.

In the semi-finals, the Gunners faced off with Funky Fresh while the Huskies took on the Incredibles.  The Gunners used a balanced scoring effort against Funky Fresh to advance to the Finals.  Taurean Marshall had 24 points to lead the way, while Danny Johnson added 20.  In the other semi-final, the Incredibles hung with the Huskies for a half before succumbing 80-57.  Tom Morales led the Huskies with 22 points while John Murphy and three other Huskies joined him with double figures.

The Finals was yet another match against these two long-time FiHo Men's League rivals.  The Gunners & Huskies have had a part in virtually every Men's League title at Fiho since the late 1990's, not a joke.  The first half was a back and forth affair, with the Gunners jumping out early behind Sam Johnson & Taurean Marshall.  The Huskies hung close with Andrew Jones & Kevin Flood connecting on some outside jumpers to keep it 33-31 Gunners at the break.  In the 2nd half, the Gunners pulled away with Danny Johnson & Marshall taking over on the perimeter, they combined for 21 second half points.  Members of the championship Gunners are Dan Johnson, Charlie Micol, Dave Whitney, Sam Johnson, Tim Daly, Mo Bitahi, Taurean Marshall and Rodney Mentout.

Congratulations Gunners & good luck this session!
