Actual practice times vary by group assignment and season. Novice swimmers generally swim 3X45 minutes each week and
intermediate swimmers swim 3X45 minutes. Practice is never required at
these levels, but regular attendance is necessary to acquire and master
the skills presented in each session. Pre-Senior swimmers generally swim 4X1.5 hours each week and
Senior swimmers swim 6X1.5 hours.
The majority of FGSC competitions, particularly at the developmental
level, are held in the Portland Metro region. There are usually a couple
of travel meets--on the coast or down the valley--but as with most other
meets, these events are completely optional. Most meets are weekend
affairs; warm-ups begin around 8AM and the meets wrap up in the early
afternoon each day. Dual meets are one day meets held specifically for
the newer swimmers and they rarely run over four hours.
In the beginning, any swimsuit along with a pair of decent goggles will
get the job done. New swimmers are given a printed FGSC swim cap, but
most swimmers will want to reserve this for competitions. Eventually,
you will want to purchase a team suit and a training suit. Boys who are
concerned about wearing "speedos" may be pleased to know that the team
suit is available in a knee-length, "jammer" style that is quite popular.
We are fortunate in Forest Grove to have JD
Pence Aquatic Supply (near Bi-Mart) to supply us with a wide
selection of swimming merchandise.
FGSC offers a training model that stresses developmentally appropriate
progression with an eye to the athlete's long-term success. We provide a
superior coach to athlete ratio and strive to create a positive
competitive experience for kids of all ability levels. Please check the
handbook for more on on athlete grouping
