BOB BUTEHORN - Head Coach

Bob Butehorn has been selected as the first-ever men’s soccer head coach at Florida Gulf Coast University, athletic director Carl McAloose. Butehorn has more than 16 years of coaching experience with NCAA Division I institutions.

“We are thrilled to have someone with Bob’s track record in Division I, both academically and athletically, lead our new men’s soccer program,” said FGCU athletic director Carl McAloose. “He is well respected in the soccer community and has ties to the development programs here in Florida. We think he is an excellent fit to build our new program as we join the Atlantic Sun Conference and think he can make an impact for us on a national level.”

Butehorn joined FGCU after spending the past five seasons as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer program at the University of Pennsylvania. He was also the head coach at Division I St. Bonaventure University from 1995-99. Taking over a program that had won just two games the season prior to his arrival, Butehorn led the Bonnies to school records for most conference wins and most wins in a season. He coached three All-Conference players, including the only Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year in school history, during his tenure.

Prior to leading the Bonnies, Butehorn served six years as an assistant coach for the University of Maryland, where he was an integral part of the turnaround of that program, eventually guiding the Terps to NCAA Sweet Sixteen.

During his coaching career, Butehorn has served on the Atlantic-10 soccer committee, the NCAA Regional Selection Committee and the NSCAA Regional Ranking Committee for which he held the chairman position for two years. He is also a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and the United States Soccer Federation.

Butehorn has also coached numerous amateur players from the East Region as the Region I Festival Coach for the U.S. Soccer Federation. During his three-year tenure as a festival coach, Butehorn led the East squad to two gold medals and saw 12 of his players eventually join Major League Soccer teams.

His accreditations include a United States Soccer Federation "A" license and an U.S. Regional Soccer Clinician. Butehorn graduated from the University of Tampa in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in sports science/physical education. As a student-athlete at Tampa, he was a member of the soccer team that won the 1981 NCAA National Soccer Championship.

Alex Aldaz completed his first season as an assistant coach for the Florida Gulf Coast University men’s soccer program.

Prior to joining the FGCU men’s soccer staff, Aldaz served as an assistant coach at Xavier University. Aldaz was also responsible for recruiting two 2006 Atlantic 10 All Rookie Team selections, in which Xavier was one of only two schools in the fourteen team conference to have multiple selections.

Prior to his tenure at Xavier, Aldaz served as an assistant coach at the University of Dayton, and helped lead the Flyers to an 11-7-1 overall record including an 8-3-0 mark and runner-up finish in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 2004. While at Dayton, Aldaz coached US National Team selections and Major League Soccer standouts Chris Rolfe and Dasan Robinson, along with four all Atlantic 10 Conference, three NSCAA All Region, and one NSCAA All American student-athletes.

Before his stint at Dayton, Aldaz was an assistant coach at the University of Redlands, a Division III institution in Redlands, California. In his two years at Redlands, Aldaz enjoyed a considerable amount of success as the Bulldogs boasted a two-year record of 36-4-2 and finished ranked in the top-11 nationally in both 2002 and 2003. The Bulldogs also won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship in each of his two seasons, and were the highest scoring team in the 2003 NCAA Division III regular season with 92 goals in 20 games. For the 2002-03 seasons, Aldaz coached twelve All SCIAC, two SCIAC Players of the Year, six NSCAA All Region, and two NSCAA All American student-athletes.

Prior to his two-year stretch at Redlands, Aldaz was the assistant coach at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas during the 2001 season.

Aldaz began his coaching career for the Austin Flyers Soccer Club in Austin, Texas, where he was responsible for training and coaching nationally-ranked boys' soccer teams.

Aldaz was a former midfielder in the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues and helped the University of Texas club team to a national championship in 1996. He is a graduate of the University of Texas, has a master’s degree from the University of Redlands, and has received the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.
