FC South Central – Frequently Asked Questions

1.) What is Club Soccer? Club soccer is typically a geographically organized soccer program whose purpose is to provide opportunity for youth soccer players to further develop their skills by playing a level of competition that is higher than that player would see in their local recreational league. Club soccer is for the player that is serious about the game and is committed to improving as a player. The value of club soccer comes from the high level of coaching the player receives, the strong competition the player faces, the exposure to different styles of play, and, at the older levels, and the opportunity to receive exposure to college opportunities and access to college coaches and scouts.

2.) What does U14/U18/etc stand for? The ‘U’ in the U14/U18 stands for under, meaning that players on a U14 team would be under the age of 14 on August 1. To find the proper age group for you player, consult the IYSA age group chart at this website: http://www.illinoisyouthsoccer.org/General_Other_Info/agegroups.htm.

3.) What type of time commitment is involved? Pre-season training for the spring season will start in March and the spring season will conclude in late May/early June. Training will occur twice a week, typically on a Tuesday/Thursday schedule. Games and tournaments will be played on Saturday and Sunday only. You should expect to be playing either a league game or a tournament nearly every weekend during this time frame.

4.) What league will F.C. South Central be a part of? We are members of the Southern Illinois Soccer League (www.sisl.org). The league consists of teams that are mostly located in the Metro East area. All Spring SISL League matches will be played in Granite City, IL on the campus of Southwestern Illinois College.

5.) What tournaments will F.C. South Central participate in? For the U14 team, tournament details will be finalized closer to the start of the season, but F.C. South Central is committed to playing in 2 tournaments.  For the U18 team, F.C. South Central is committed to playing in 4 tournaments around the state/Metro St. Louis area. Tournaments being considered, for both age groups, are located in Bloomington, Peoria, Champaign, Morton, Quincy, St. Louis, Chicago suburbs, and locations around the Midwest. Club tournaments are held on a single weekend, and typically guarantee you 3 games (two on Saturday, one on Sunday).

6a.) What are the fees involved for the U14 team? The cost of being on the roster for F.C. South Central is $300.00. The fee covers a new high quality Adidas uniform (2 jerseys, two pair of socks, and one pair of shorts) to keep, an Adidas duffel bag to keep, entry fees to the SISL and 2 tournaments, referee fees, and money to cover practice items such as nets, and field maintenance. We will keep the uniform style as long as Adidas continues to make it. A player that returns to F.C. South Central in the 2013 season will have the option to wear their previously purchased uniform, thus allowing a cheaper fee for that season. All coaches involved are volunteering their time in order to keep the fees as low as possible.

6b.)    What are the fees involved for the U18 team? The cost of being on the roster for F.C. South Central is $300.00, plus uniform costs. The fee covers entry fees to the SISL and 3 tournaments, entry fee to one college showcase, a new Adidas duffle bag to keep, money to cover practice items such as nets, and field maintenance to RHSA field, which is F.C. South Central‘s training grounds. The uniform fee will vary depending on if you are a returning player or not. We will keep the uniform style as long as Adidas continues to make it. A player that returns to F.C. South Central in the 2012 season will have the option to wear their previously purchased uniform, thus allowing a cheaper fee for that season.  All coaches involved are volunteering their time in order to keep the fees as low as possible.

7.) Who will make up the coaching staff? - The staff will be made up of the following coaches, all of which will at the minimum hold their United States Soccer Class E license:

Travis Matthews (Head Coach/Trainer) Travis is the current FC South Central boys U18 head coach. He previously had been the Assistant Varsity Coach at Lutheran High School in Springfield for the past 4 seasons. He is a Lincolnwood High School alum who was a 3 year starter for the Lancers. Travis currently holds his USSF Class ‘D’ coaching license, along with his NSCAA Region III Diploma.

Dan Herschelman (Assist Coach/Goalkeeping Trainer) Dan was a 4 year member of the North Central University Men’s Soccer Team and is also a Lincolnwood alum. He has served as an assistant coach on the North Central University staff, and has also coached at the club level in the Chicago area.

8.) Do I have to tryout? F.C. South Central will be a member of the Illinois Youth Soccer Association, which is the official governing body of the sport in this state. The IYSA requires that all Club teams hold tryouts to fill their rosters. If you will be out of town or cannot attend the tryouts, please contact the coaching staff and other arrangements for player evaluation can be made.
