Fauquier Mustangs Sweep Two From the SYA Mets
The Fauquier Mustangs took two from the SYA Mets last weekend at Childs Field. Both games were rather one-sided affairs, but a gritty Mets team never gave up until the final out was made.
Fauquier Mustangs 21 SYA Mets 2
The Fauquier Mustangs charged out of the gate hard and jumped to an early lead in the first game against the Mets. Led by the pitching of Tanner Delph and Colin Cummins, the Mets bats were held quiet. Mark Terrell continued to be a powerhouse at the plate driving a ball to the wall early in the game. Tyler Johnson also contributed with a blast to right field.
Fauquier Mustangs 28 SYA Mets 9
The Mustangs may have found a new weapon in the second game of this double header. Brenton Doyle started the game on the mound for Fauquier and pitched two solid innings. Tyler Shaffer took the mound in the third inning and allowed a couple of base runners to reach base but then put out the fire by snagging a line drive and catching a runner off the bag for a double play. The final inning saw Tyler Colwell on the mound. Colwell pitched very well, however he got little help in the field as the Mustangs fielders committed several errors that allowed the Mets to mount a small rally. Travis Croson closed out the game for the Mustangs.

Fauquier Mustangs Split with the Sterling Xplosion
The Fauquier Mustangs and Sterling Xplosion split their doubleheader this past weekend. Both teams showed why they are to be considered amongst the elite in the ODBL.
Sterling Xplosion 7 Fauquier Mustanngs 6
The Xplosion jumped out to an early 4-0 lead over the Fauquier Mustangs and held that lead for several innings. Shane Buss was solid on the mound, but the Mustangs offense could never mount a serious charge against a strong Xplosion southpaw. In the fourth inning, the Fauquier Mustangs bats awoke and they rallied to cut the Xplosion lead to 1 by running the score to 4-3. However, a strong Xplosion team answered with two runs of their own to increase their lead 6-3. In the fourth inning, the Mustangs answered with their own southpaw, Colin Cummins. Cummins came on in relief of Shane Buss and quieted an Xplosion rally. In the top of the fifth, the Fauquier Mustangs showed what they were made of and evened the score at 6-6. A clutch two out single by Tyler Johnson brought in the tying run. The bottom of the fifth may have been one of the most dramatic innings in Mustangs history. After loading the bases with no outs, Colin Cummins leaned on an outstanding Mustangs defense to work out of the jam. Using his clutch control, Cummins forced the next three Xplosion hitters to ground out. Tyler Fetherolf was a rock behind the plate and recorded two outs at home during this inning. In the bottom of the sixth, the Xplosion loaded the bases again. After a close play at the plate nailed the first Xplosion runner, for the second out of the inning, another Xplosion runner broke for home in the confusion. A huge collision at the plate jarred the ball loose from Fetherolf and the Xplosion squeaked out the win.
Fauquier Mustangs 10 Sterling Xplosion 4
After dropping a gut-wrenching game in the opener, the Fauquier Mustangs were not to be denied in the second game. The Mustangs came out swinging and opened up a 6-0 lead early in the game. Brenton Doyle and Tyler Johnson both had multiple hits during this game and provided the spark the Mustangs needed. Michael Wigglesworth launched a bomb to left that scored a Mustang run. Tyler Colwell also had a good day at the plate and made several key plays at second base. Tyler Johnson and Jason Alvarez both made diving stops during this game to prevent Sterling from advancing runners across the plate. The true workhorse of the day was Travis Croson. Croson took the mound in the first inning and refused to give it up until the last out was recorded. His pinpoint control and baffling change-up proved to be more than the Xplosion hitters could handle.

Fauquier Mustangs Take One from the Generals
The Fauquier Mustangs and Manassas Generals each took a game today at Child's Field in Warrenton. Today's results brought the Mustangs ODBL season record to 4-2.
Manassas Generals 7 Fauquier Mustangs 6
The first game of the double header saw the Mustangs and Generals engaged in a chess game for the first five innings. Each team had opportunities, but were never able to capitalize.
Travis Croson held the Generals scoreless through four innings. Several times, Croson found himself in a jam with Generals runners in scoring position, but each time he was able to pitch out of trouble. Tyler Shaffer had an outstanding game behind the plate, keeping the passed balls to a minimum and not allowing any Generals runners to sneak in. Several Mustangs hitters also hit the ball solid but their efforts were thwarted by a strong gloved Generals third baseman. Shane Buss drove a double to centerfield early in the game, but the Mustangs were unable to bring him home.
After a sixth inning rally, the Generals held a commanding lead over the Fauquier Mustangs 7-0. However, in the bottom of the sixth the Mustangs came to life. Several Mustang hitters showed great patience and drew walks. Control continued to plague the Generals pitchers as the Mustangs began chipping away at the lead. Brenton Doyle had a key hit in the bottom of the sixth to keep the rally alive. Unfortunately, the lead was too large for the Mustangs to overcome and they fell one run short, losing 7-6.
Fauquier Mustangs 17 Manassas Generals 12
The second game belonged to the Fauquier Mustangs as soon as the first pitch was thrown. The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead in the first inning 4-0. The Generals answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first. However, in the second inning, pitcher Tanner Delph found his groove and began to dispose of the Generals hitters in swift fashion.
The Fauquier Mustangs continued to apply pressure on the Generals and methodically increased thier lead throughout the game. Delph helped his own cause by smashing two shots down the third base line during this game. Tyler Fetherolf also had a couple of solid hits for the Mustangs. Tyler Colwell continued his solid play in the field and at the plate.
Shane Buss came on in relief of Tanner Delph late in the game and was able to close out the win for the Mustangs.

Fauquier Mustangs Split an Exciting Doubleheader with the Longhorns
The Fauquier Mustangs and Longhorns Baseball Club played two exciting games this past weekend. Both teams showed a lot of heart and will to win in these games. The Fauquier Mustangs fought back and took a close game from the Longhorns in the first contest, winning 10 - 9. Tyler Johnson looked impressive on the mound pitching himself out of a bases loaded, no out jam. Tyler Fetherolf and Travis Croson both had good days at the plate and Shane Buss added a blast that went to the wall for a triple. Michael Wigglesworth laid down a beautiful bunt to score a run for the Mustangs as well.
The second game started out as a low scoring game and remained that way until the seventh inning. With both teams knotted up, the decision was made to let somebody get the win. The Longhorns answered the challenge and opened a barage of hits against the Mustangs that scored 11 runs. The Fauquier Mustangs could have folded up their tents and gone home, but they weren't done yet. The Mustangs unleashed a torrent of runs of their own that unfortunately came up short. Sources tell me that Tyler Fetherolf had an outstanding day in the outfield, capped off by a dazzling catch to record an important out. These same sources also tell me that Michael Wigglesworth took command behind home plate and did an outstanding job of not allowing the Longhorns runners to get through him.

Fauquier Mustangs Split with Bulldogs
The Fauquier Mustangs split their doubleheader with the Western Loudoun Bulldogs last weekend. In the first game, the Bulldogs came out swinging and jumped out to an early lead. The Mustangs bats were silent through a good portion of the game. In the middle innings, the Mustangs mounted a threat and loaded the bases. However, that rally was squashed when Brenton Doyle was robbed of extra bases by an outstanding play by the Bulldogs left fielder. Tanner Delph, John Lewis and Colin Cummins all pitched for the Mustangs. The final score was 8-6.
The second game saw the Mustangs bear down and defeat the Bulldogs 10-3. Gritty defensive performances were turned in by Tyler Colwell, Tyler Johnson and Brenton Doyle. Shane Buss and Travis Croson combined for the win on the mound.

Fauquier Mustangs Fall to the Gainesville Cannons in the ODBL Playoffs
The Fauquier Mustangs fell to a strong Gainesville Cannons team in the ODBL Playoffs this weekend by a score of 10-0. Travis Croson started on the mound for the Mustangs and worked out of a first inning jam to hold the Cannons scoreless. The Mustangs defense also looked solid, putting the Cannons down in order in the second inning. However, in the third inning, the Cannons were able to score four and that is all they would need. As the game wore on, the Mustangs continued to play good in the field, but the Cannons hitters were able to find the creases and continued to pour on the runs. Shane Buss came on in relief of Croson in the fourth inning.
Once again, the achilles heel for the Mustangs was their lack of production at the plate. Several Mustang hitters made good contact, but a tight Cannons defense squashed any momentum the Mustangs tried to build. Brenton Doyle was the lone brightspot for the Mustangs at the plate. Doyle hit a laser down the third base line and motored in for a triple. Unfortunately, the Cannons tightened up and he was not able to score.
It was a disappointing way to finish a very good season for the Mustangs, but the Mustangs continue to put themselves in position to succeed. While finishing third in the ODBL was not the goal, there are seven other teams in the league that would gladly trade places with the Mustangs today. Good season guys!
