12u Babe Rith Rule ?
|
I don't usually do softball but a pitch that is thrown and rolls across ground before striking batter is a dead ball situation and batter takes first, correct? I had a coach question that last night and say it's different than baseball rule.

It becomes a dead ball situation at the instant the pitch touches the batter, if that's what you mean. Up until that point the ball remains live, just as it would on any other pitch.
The pitch touching the ground in itself doesn't make the ball dead. The hit batter does. The baseball and softball rules are exactly the same in this respect, so the coach's argument was groundless.
A pitch that touches the ground before reaching the plate is treated the same as any other pitch. The lone exception is that it can never become a called strike (non-swinging) because it did not pass through the strike zone in-flight.
If a pitch does bounce in, it remains live unless some other action causes it to become dead. Any runners on base can still advance, the batter could still hit this pitch into play, she could swing at it and miss for a strike, you can have a foul tip, an uncaught third strike or catcher's obstruction and, if the pitch hits the batter, you can still award first base (provided that the batter did not purposely allow the ball to touch her).

It is slightly different in baseball, although not as to the ball hitting the batter.
( In that case it is dead ball, batter goes to first and forced runners advance)
In baseball, with no one on base a dropped pitch that crosses the foul line is a ball.
Otherwise it is no pitch.
With a runners on base it would be a balk.
In softball it is a ball with the ball live.

The ball remains live. Runners may advance (Look Back Rule not in effect until pitcher regains control of the ball in the circle). A ball is added to the batter's count.
