I have found no rule in the asa rulebook on this for fastpitch ,only that the pitcher has to have hands seperated.I have been told by a couple of umpires over this season that pitcher must present the ball.

Did they define "present"?
There is no requirement.

You've been told wrong. Check the first few sections of Rule 6 - you'll see a number of things that the pitcher must do, you'll see some things that a pitcher must not do. And you'll see what constitutes a legal delivery - and nowhere will you find that a pitcher must present the ball.

Thank you! This is fast becoming a viral "softball myth", with coaches from youth and HS softball squawking about "presenting the ball".

Not in the rules, coach.

I don't know how fast it's becoming a myth, because I think it's already been one for some time. I have heard coaches and fans gripe about "presenting the ball" probably as far back as twenty years.

It is my understanding that up until around 1980 the high school and ASA rules did use some terminology about "presenting the ball". That was a little before my time as a coach or umpire, so I'm not totally sure about that. I've been told this by some guys that did umpire back in those days.

At least it would offer some explanation why this "requirement" seems to survive today. The whole notion of "presenting the ball" had to come from somewhere!

And then there's this, straight out of the current USSSA slow pitch rule book:

Rule 6-4-A: After assuming the pitching position on the Pitcher’s Plate or in the
Pitching Area, the Pitcher must present the ball in FRONT OF HIS BODY (for at least one second) in either one or both hands before starting the delivery motions.

So it does appear that some sanctioning bodies still use the "present the ball" terminology, at least in the slow pitch game. But they don't really get into any sort of definition of what "presenting the ball" should look like, other than listing the usual pre-pitch preliminary requirements that are similar to other sanctions.

We had the opposite situation last season. The opposing coach kept yelling after every pitch that our 10U pitcher was presenting the ball before she pitched. We never understood his point and the umpire came to the mound and told her she was OK in her delivery. That didn't quieten the other coach and he continued his rant thoughout the game. Even her pitching coach didn't understand his complaint.

Don't go to the pitcher. Go to the opposing coach.
Tell him the pitcher is breaking no rule and then tell him to knock it off.
