Brain Cramp: Who's Out Here?
|
ASA Rules apply, but you can answer for other rule sets, just for my (and others) benefit:
R1 on third, R2 on first, no outs. R2 doesn't attempt to advance on the first few pitches, and the batter has a two-strike count on her. On the next pitch, R2 takes off for second, and the batter swings and misses a pitch for strike three. The batter's momentum on the swing places her over home plate, and hinders F2's throw to second base. Umpire judges it's interference on the batter.
Besides the batter (who already struck out), what happens now? Is R1 ruled out since she's closest to home, and R2 is returned to first? Or is R2 out, and R1 stays at third?

Re: Brain Cramp: Who's Out Here?

P. When, after being declared out or after scoring, an offensive player interferes
with a defensive player’s opportunity to make a play on another runner.
EFFECT: The ball is dead. The runner closest to home plate at the time of the
interference is out. All runners not out must return to the last base touched at
the time of the interference.

Re: Brain Cramp: Who's Out Here?

Happened similarly last night in the Yankees-Red Sox game ... A-Rod was the batter ... on a full count, Blue had strike 3 and A-Rod leaned towards first like it was ball 4 interferring ( OBS in MLB ) with the backstops throw to 2nd, it ended the inning ... now I'm gonna have to rewatch it as I'm not sure if there was 1 out or 2 previously ... hope I tivo'd

Let me guess that Tim McCarver was the color commentary for that game; he is one of the absolute worst sources for misinformation in baseball.
That is interference in baseball, too, not obstruction. Whomever said it was OBS, and led you to believe them, was completely wrong.

Re: Brain Cramp: Who's Out Here?

I got ambitious, and googled MLB rules.
(c) He interferes with the catcher’s fielding or throwing by stepping out of the batter’s box or making any other movement that hinders the catcher’s play at home base. EXCEPTION: Batter is not out if any runner attempting to advance is put out, or if runner trying to score is called out for batter’s interference.
Rule 6.06(c) Comment: If the batter interferes with the catcher, the plate umpire shall call “interference.” The batter is out and the ball dead. No player may advance on such interference (offensive interference) and all runners must return to the last base that was, in the judgment of the umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference.

Steve ... guess you didn't see the game ... and it WAS McCarver who said he is being called out for Interference ... Then they ran the replay & you could hear the Blue loudly & clearly call A-Rod out for OBS ... LMAO! McCarver then changed his call to OBS ...
... I should have inserted a question mark after my "( OBS in MLB )" ...

Re: Brain Cramp: Who's Out Here?

Well, Ol' Timmy got one right and moved off that answer.
I can understand the confusion as part of the problem is that MLB uses the word "obstruct" in their definition of INT.
INTERFERENCE
(a) Offensive interference is an act by the team at bat which interferes with,
obstructs, impedes, hinders or confuses any fielder attempting to make a play.
If the umpire declares the batter, batter-runner, or a runner out for interference,
all other runners shall return to the last base that was in the judgment of the
umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference, unless otherwise
provided by these rules.

Re: Brain Cramp: Who's Out Here?

Got a funny for ya. r1 on first. starts to steal second, catcher throws down, r1 safe at 2. On deck batter starts heading toward batters box. SS overthrows Pitcher. R1 now headed for 3rd. On deck batter, almost to batters box, kindly stops the overthrown ball with her foot so it wont go to the backstop. No chance of throwing r1 out anyway. And to make it really interesting,
during same play, there is a second ball that magically appears and is lieing on the ground in foul territory near catcher. Whats your call?????
Our umps called the ODB out, and she didnt even show at the plate. And made r1 return to 2b. I argued the rule (NSA)....lost, and since it wasnt a close game, let it go. I was mad then, but now its kinda funny.

Re: Brain Cramp: Who's Out Here?

If there was ABSOLUTELY no possibility a defender could have made a play on the active runner, my call would be a blocked ball and return R1 to 2B.
The rule refers to making an out. In this case, making no assumptions, my idea of a play is that the possibility of an out is still available.

Re: Brain Cramp: Who's Out Here?

NFHS:
I have a DEAD BALL.
Since no runner was being played on, no one is out.
Place R1 depending on her location at the time the ball became dead (if she had made it to third, she stays, if not, back to second.
IN NO CASE IS ODB out.

"and hinders F2's throw to second base" This is important. Was there a throw? If there was a throw, then you have interference by a retired batter, therefore the runner at third is also out. The runner at 1B stays at 1B.

You can also have interference if there wasn't a throw. If F2 popped up to throw to second, but aborted her throw because of the retired batter's position outside of the box, that's still interference.

Re: Brain Cramp: Who's Out Here?

F2 made the throw to 2b. R1 safe. on the bad throw back to f1, r1 headed to 3b. ODB actually helped f2 by stopping the ball from going all the way to the backstop. there was no retired batter, she was the base runner.

Sure would be nice to know which play you are referencing since it obviously isn't the OP.

Re: Brain Cramp: Who's Out Here?

FWIW:
I got a feeling he is addressing his (fastpitch4life)situation posted 09/29/09, rather than the OP.
r1 on first. starts to steal second, catcher throws down, r1 safe at 2.

Looking at it in threaded view, it looks like I responded to the ODB situation, then Tex1 responded to me, but referred back to the OP........
