Illegal Helmet
|
High School Rules
My daughter has a 2 year old newer model Worth helmet. I spray painted it to match her HS colors. An umpire checked her helmet before a game and sad it was illegal and she couldn't wear it. He said the NocSae stamp was visible and OK but there is a "WARNING" sticker that was missing. He said it was supposed to be on the inside of the helmet. Does anyone know what he is talking about?

Re: Illegal Helmet

Not a clue. The FED rule on helmets requires an exterior warning label that is either a sticker or an embossed imprint. Nothing in the rule requires a similar label on the inside of the helmet.

Re: Illegal Helmet

My DD may have been mistaken about where the WARNING label was located. I have seen some rules on the web about an external Warning Label.

Re: Illegal Helmet

One of the dangers in painting a softball helmet is what you have discovered: the paint obscures the required stamp and label.
NFHS Rules (1-6-1) requires that the NOCSAE stamp be permanently affixed (usually embossed) and the exterior warning label be legible. The warning label can be either a sticker or embossed, and may be on the outside of the helmet, under or on the top of the bill.
If the warning label on your daughter's helmet was a sticker, the paint has apparently rendered it unreadable, and probably made the helmet permanently illegal for high school use. If the warning label was embossed, the paint may have merely filled in the label so it may be possible to restore the helmet to legality by removing the paint in the area of the warning label.
Look the helmet over carefully. If you see what looks like a painted over paper rectangle, that was probably the warning label. If you see what looks like it might have been an embossed label of words (not the NOCSAE stamp, which looks like the outline of a helmet), that was probably the warning label.

Are you sure he wasn't saying the NOCSAE stamp/decal on the 'mask' was missing ? The helmet and the mask each need the certification ...

Re: Illegal Helmet

Most rules from the various body's says that the helmets can only be painted by the factory. If you go out and have the helmet painted then it is illegal. The stickers have nothing to do with it. They say that once you paint a helmet it no longer meets the standards. most company won't honor any liablity once painted, I think that is the reason why you can not have them painted.

Not sure what rules sets you consider "most", or which ones you are familiar with. However, that is not true in those which I call, NCAA, NFHS and ASA.

Agreed. ASA and NFHS don't care how or who paints the helmet, so long as it meets the other requirements of the rules.

Re: Illegal Helmet

I still say the Blue was looking for the NOCSAE sticker that is on some face masks in lieu of a NOCSAE stamp ... and that the OP just misunderstood or the Blue mis-spoke ...

Re: Illegal Helmet

The Nocsae stamp is imbedded in the helmet and was clearly visible. The mask was not painted and the Nocsae stamp was also plainly visible. The umpire specifically referenced a WARNING sticker.

Re: Illegal Helmet

The NFHS rule book says the warning can be a sticker, affixed to the outside or either side of the bill, or it may be embossed into the helmet by the manufacture.
If the warning is embossed in your helmet, it is not required to have the sticker.

Well, just to make you happy....
STOP GIVING OUT FALSE INFORMATION
NFHS requires the embossed NOCSE on the helmet as well as a Warning sticker or statement. They are two different items.
Have you read the NFHS rule?

Hugo ... Actually misplaced my orange book and was going by memory ... that's why I said I'm ready to get hammered ... guess my memory isn't so good ... But, if you are correct, I do know I was doing it wrong, looking for either/or and not both ...

Re: Illegal Helmet

For what it is "Worth". Worth said they would send me a new Warning sticker and reminded me any custom paint added to helmet not performed by Worth would invalidate the helmet warranty. Something about certain types of paint could compromise the integrity of the helmet material.

NFHS 1-6-1:
A batting helmet with a permanently affixed
NOCSAE stamp and legible exterior warning label is mandatory for each batter, on-deck batter, players/students in the coach's boxes, runners and retired runners. The exterior warning label may be affixed to the outside of the helmet, which includes both sides of the bill, in either sticker form or embossed (at the point of manufacture).

The only rule set that I'm aware of that says this is Little League.

That's the only place I've seen it codified also....
but it should be noted that in some of the Warning Sticker notices that I have seen, it is stated that painting with products other than those approved by the manufacturer may destroy the integrety of the helmet (paraphrasing)...
