How do I practice with this weather?!!!
|
I'm in Wisconsin...if you've seen the weather, you know why I'm annoyed. I'm a Freshman coach and typically, we get the last of the indoor space. Since everyone will be practicing inside, it's almost a sure thing that we won't have any gym space. Do you have any ideas of how I can continue to coach with out being in a gym? What have you done, say, in the classroom that would work with Freshman? What do you do when the weather turns ugly and you have no where to go? I've actually contemplated sliding in the hallways...help!

how about some team bonding since they are freshman. With limited practice space there is not much else you can do. Good Luck

Work on the rules of the game. You'd surprised how many of them the girls do not know. If they learn and know them it'll make their on-field decisions better.
Also try and work on other mental aspects of the game. Work on situation strategies. Educate them about the game. Every coach loves an intelligent palyer.

I have the use of an old school turned community center one night during the week (we get the gym on weekends) but there is an old cafeteria that we use. The space is limited but better than nothing. I have had pitchers using the hallway too. The lighting is very challenging but we use it.
Use any open space you can find just to throw, hit grounders, pitch and yes sliding too. The more things you can cover inside the less you have to do outside. It will take some creative thinking. Is there a garage, storage area, auditorium, cafeteria, central hallway?
We are from Western New York and we had a day and a half of freezing rain and sleet. I know its frustrating but maybe spring will come eventually.

Check out other schools (middle schools, elementary) or health clubs or warehouses. Also indoor batting cages.

As for conditioning and things like that, utilize the stairs and hallways of the school. We used to have to run stairs all the time when the weather was bad. Fielding practice can be a little hard. Use basic skill drills like defensive slides and "paddle" drills. If you don't have a batting cage to use, invest in some wiffle balls and stay in the hallways. As a freshmen team, offer your players to the JV and Varsity teams as runners and extra bodies for their practice. This lets your girls work on their baserunning skills.
