Far West Pop Warner: History
2007 Lifetime Achievement Award

Far West is celebrating its history by presenting the First Annual Far West Pop Warner Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is intended to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the association and who have positively influenced the children of Far West.
Cecil Davis began his Far West reign in 1974 as the first coach of the legendary “Hombres”. Over a span of 9 years, Cecil touched many lives with his hard-nosed, soft-hearted coaching style. Those who played for Cecil remember him as vividly today as they did as a child, and his stories are often shared among the “old school” boys. His home-made trophies, constructed from empty tin cans, blocks of wood, and gold and maroon spray paint, still linger in many Far West homes today. These trophies sit on desk tops and shelves and, for many, serve as reminders of childhood memories, life-lessons, and when the passion for football was first ignited. Far West thanks Cecil for touching so many lives in this way. The impression he has made on the Far West community is engraved in the hearts of our Far West children as many coaches and fathers are passing the torch lit long ago by their “Coach”, Cecil Davis. |

Beginning in the 1970's Norm Dowell and his wife, Marilyn began their involvement with Pop Warner as the coach and team mom for their oldest son's Junior Pee Wee team, the Diamondbacks. From that moment on, Norm and Marilyn, along with their four children, Mark, David, Danny, and Becky, began to live the Pop Warner Family life. The three boys played football, and Becky began her cheering debut at age 4. As the Kids became adults and had children of their own, the family continued its involvement in Pop Warner. Mark and Becky coached tackle and cheer teams for several years, and several of Norm's grandchildren participated as players and cheerleaders. As his family has gooten involved in different activities, Norm's dedication and commitment to Pop Warner hasn't ceased. He has worn many Pop Warner hats over the last 35 years. He has served as the Vice-President of West Association, Commissioner of the Southwest Conference, and has served on the Federation Board of Directors for the last umpteen years. Currently, the Vice-Commissioner of AYFF. Norm still makes time for the children of AZ Pop Warner despite having 9 grandchildren! In fact, you can find Norm at Far West and other Pop Warner fields across the valley every Saturday. Norm is truly the patriarch of Arizona Pop Warner. He is the epitome of fairness, he is the poster-man of sportsmanship, and servers as an example we can all be proud to follow. Thank You Norm, from all of us here at Far West!!! |
