A team with heart - Pop Warner team gives $18,000 saved for Hawaii trip to fire victims

An amazing thing happened on November 10 at the Fallbrook High School football stadium. The Pop Warner Warrior Nation football team decided to forgo the funds they had raised to enable them to play in the Hawaii Bowl this month and instead gave the $18,000 to three Pop Warner families significantly affected by the Fallbrook (Rice Canyon) Fire.

During halftime, an official presentation of the funds was made to the Maddock, Dalton and Ratz/Sacks families. Before Allan Brassard, president of Fallbrook Pop Warner, presented the check, Warrior Nation Head Coach Shawn Coleman and Assistant Coach Tony Arand shared some heartfelt words.

A choked-up Coleman spoke softly into the microphone, “We want to extend our hand of support. From our family to your family, we offer this token of assistance.”

Arand said that being a coach for Pop Warner means teaching kids to do the right thing – for the right reasons.

Foregoing a trip to Hawaii and giving the money to fire victims of the Pop Warner family was the right thing to do, he said.

“We hope in some way this will help you rebuild your dreams,” Arand said.

Brassard thanked team members and parents for their generosity and the sacrifice they made to help the families. “We are here for the kids,” he said. “It’s all about the kids.”

Theresa Dalton, a victim of the fire, remains astounded by the generosity of the Warrior Nation football team.

“We thank them from the bottom of our hearts,” said Dalton. “We can’t replace what was lost, but their giving spirit is something we will never forget.”

Pop Warner football player Issac Ratz stood closely to his mother, Lisa Sacks, and her husband, Noah. His mother was clearly overwhelmed by the financial support.

“We were blown away by this,” said Lisa Sacks, whose family was affected by the firestorm. “There are no words to express how incredible it is that this football team would sacrifice going to Hawaii for those of us who lost homes in the fire.”

Sacks said being at the game also lifted the spirits of her family, who have experienced the emotional upheaval of being fire victims.

When Coleman first approached his team about donating their Hawaii funds to help the fire victims, he was not surprised at their response. The 35 team members, ranging in age from 9 to 11, had clearly seen the aftermath of the fire and the destruction it brought to their small town.

In the blink of an eye, the team agreed to cancel their trip to help the families. In fact, they were excited about doing it, said Coleman.

“I expected the response that I got from these kids,” Coleman said. Since the beginning of the football season, Coleman has endeavored to teach them that God has given them a heart to be the best that they can.

Being a coach, Coleman said, means helping these kids take the right steps toward adulthood.

“We should teach these future men that we commit not only to our own goals but to also the community as a whole,” he noted.

Season Kicks Off!
Getting cooled off!
Asst Coach Gary Backe sprays down players to keep 'em cool during 110 deg. temps
Saturday, September 1st, Pop Warner teams played their first pre-season games in the high heat and humidity.  Most of the teams played in either Fallbrook, Ramona, Temecula or Murrieta and had to battle the high temperatures as well as the players on the field.  Shawn Coleman’s Warrior Nation Jr. Pee Wee team played in Murrieta at 12:00 and at game time, it was 110 degrees.  Coaches ensured that players were kept cool as much as possible, Coleman’s team used a water sprayer to mist players.   Fallbrook’s overall win-loss record for preseason games is 3-5 however, President Allan Brassard stated that the Pop Warner experience is not all about winning and losing.  It is about having fun, getting experience playing and learning life lessons.  He also added that since Fallbrook is a small community, it immediately is put at a disadvantage since Fallbrook plays other communities where teams are fielded from a population 3-4 times the size of Fallbrook.  Regardless of community size, registration is up and topping over 370 participants on 9 football, 1 dance and 5 cheer teams.   The organization though, is progressing in it’s skill level, despite the win-loss record.  Last season, Fallbrook Pop Warner fielded all Division II teams compared to this year where two of the 9 teams play at the Division I level.  Teams competing at the Division I level face a tougher competition because many of the players have prior experience playing football.  Mark Thomas, who coaches the Tribe Pee Wee team, moved from last season’s Division II level of play to playing this year at the Division I level.  Last year, Thomas’ team posted an 11-0 record during the season and in post-season play, defeated the San Marcos Bishops to win the Palomar Conference Championship.  This year, the competition isn’t rolling over for last year’s Conference Champions.  Thomas has this to say about their pre-season loss, “The boys learned a bigger life lesson during their 2-hour loss than they did all season long last year.”  He also realizes that it is going to be a hard season because there are lots of good teams in the Division but that the players are only going to get better because they are playing at a higher level.  He also noted that the competition is preparing them for high school play.  Many of the Pop Warner players continue playing through their high school years.

Members of the community can view many of games this year at the high school’s newly renovated field.  Games are held on Saturdays and game times are posted on the organization’s website:  www.fallbrookpopwarner.org   Regular season play starts on September 8th  and continues through October.

Pop Warner holds Family Fun Day at Live Oak Park
Family Fun Day Ann
Lori Jane Wallace and Ann Brassard.

Live Oak Park was the venue for the first annual Pop Warner “Family Fun Day”.  The event was an opportunity for families to get together and enjoy the park as well as meet teammates, coaches and others in the Pop Warner organization.

Kids enjoyed cooling off on a water slide brought in by Rick Livingston, the new Equipment Manager for Pop Warner.  Don Lougee, Tate Young, Chuck Hoover and others grilled hot dogs and hamburgers all day for the crowd.  Major Market was a major contributor to the event, donating 100 hot dogs and buns as well as a huge cake.  Families also brought side dishes to share.  This year, the organization registered a whopping 370 kids to participate on 9 football and 6 cheer and dance teams and is looking forward to a busy busy season.
