SUPERHEROES A HUGE DRAW AT SARNIA BOX OFFICE
injured

The London City Falcons put in a heroic effort in Ontario Cup competition this past weekend. Riddled with injuries and walking wounded on the pitch, the Falcons surrendered 1 goal in all the games, but failed to advance from the tournament round.

In the opener, Katelyn got things rolling just two minutes into the game, converting a nice cross from Hailey past the Tecumseh keeper. Hailey added a second before half, slotting home a nice cross from Bradie. Nikki added a third, scrambling home a rebound off a nice strike by Hailey. Julia and the defensive team, with Kathleen at sweeper, earned a well deserved shut-out.

Final score Falcons 3  Tecumseh Warriors 0

In the afternnon game, the girls played extremely well, and were unfortunate not to gain a result they truly deserved. Hailey, Katelyn and Lisa came close to slotting home a key goal, but it just was'nt meant to be. Unfortunately, a huge blunder by the official, at the end of the game, proved to be costly, as the cross town rivals netted a late winner.

Final score London United 1  Falcons 0

Now onto day two, and another fine performance. Nikki got things rolling plotting home a bobbled ball over the line, and Lisa added some much needed insurance early in the second half, as the Tornadoes were starting to battle their way back. The back four of Jocelyn, Cole, Jessica H, Cassidy and Brianne, once again shut things down and snuffed out all forward advances by the Tornadoes, protecting another shut-out for Julia.

Final score  Falcons 2 - South West Tornadoes 0

The final game of the round robin tournament was against a fine team from Sarnia. A combination of smart ball movement, and fresh legs fro Sarnia, coupled with the fatigue and injuries the girls suffering, gave the definate edge in play to Sarnia in this one. Hailey blasted home a well taken strike from 25 yards out to give the Falcons a 1-0 half-time lead, and once again, the girls shut down the fort in front of Julia to hang on to the 1-0 victory.  Tireless midfield work by Jessica K, Bradie and Sarah H.

Final Score - Falcons 1  Sarnia 0

Job well done ladies. Get better Kathleen, Jodie and Sarah, we need you. The rest of you, plenty of ice and some well deserved rest. Although we do not move on from here, as it would appear, we are extremely proud of your effort!!!

Good luck to our cross town rivals, London United Freedom, as you move on to the Ontario Summer Games. We wish you all the best and hope you represent our region well in Ottawa. Go get 'em ladies.

FALCONS SURVIVE TORNADOES FORCE
emerge

The Falcons opened their WRSL regular season campaign with a hard fought 1-0 win. The teams sparred in the first half with limited chances, with the best opportuity coming off Jodie's boot, with a well struck right footed shot off the cross bar.

No score at half time.

The girls had a slight edge in the opening of the second half, with a couple of close calls, and Southwest answered with a couple of mid field strikes that were not far off the mark.

Unfortunately, with 16 minutes remaining, Sarah suffered a serious injury and had to be taken away by ambulance. Great to hear you're OK young lady!! Get better soon!

Jodie finally broke the deadlock with a gaol in the late stage, and the girls survived a late rally by the Tornadoes, to earn the victory. Julia earned the shut-out, supported by strong defending by Kathleen, Jocelyn, Cole, Brianne, Sarah, Lisa and Jessica H.

Good job girls, now back to the practice field!

Falcons Kick Off WOYSL Competition
Kickoff

WOYSL Opening Kick Off Tournament.

This weekend saw the opening of the Outdoor season with the WOYSL

Tourney.

Saturday.

The Falcons got off to a slow start against a hardworking Eastside team

which jumped into the lead and never looked back. Falcons 1- Eastside 4,

Hailey getting the loan goal for The Falcons.

Second game Saturday was against the Soo, totally different game for The

Falcons, their marking was tighter and had chances to win. Falcons 0-

Soo 0. Shutout went to Lisa.

Sunday.

A rematch with the Soo, very early goal from Hailey on a corner by

Nikki, probably will be the goal of the year. The goal actually seemed

to boost the Soo team and had chances to tie the match, Nikki scored the

Falcons second goal with a nice finish. The Soo added a goal towards the

end making it Falcons 2- Soo 1.

Semi Final match so the Falcons go up against the Freedom under cold and

windy conditions. The Falcons took the lead on a well struck free kick

from Hailey, The Freedom tied it up to force extra time which solved

nothing. The Freedom won the match on penalties.

The Falcons showed improvements as the weekend went on, well done

ladies, next game will be our opening league match Thursday against

Southwest.

FALCONS GAIN MUCH EXPERIENCE AGAINST TOUGH OPPONENTS IN OSHAWA

Digger battles for the loose ball against an opposing player from Pickering

The London City Falcons Regional Girls (with some premier call-ups - Thanks Girls!), were in Oshawa on the first weekend of May to match up against some unfamiliar opponents in the Frank Sobil Spring Classic in Oshawa, ON.

The Girls kicked off the tournament Saturday morning against the Pickering Power, one of the top ranked teams '94 teams in Ontario.  The Falcons held Pickering scoreless after one half of play, but Pickering capitalized on some unfortunate mistakes by the Falcons and scored 3 goals in the second half to shut the Falcons down in their first game.

FINAL SCORE: FALCONS - 0     PICKERING - 3

FALCONS GOAL SCORER(S): NONE

After some much needed rest the Falcons regrouped for an afternoon affair against the OSU Force from Ottawa. The rain was able to hold off for the first game against Pickering but most of the parents were forced to stay in their warm and dry vehicles in the afternoon game as the rain came down throughout the game. Nikki was able to take advantage of the wet grass as she skipped the ball through the wall and past the helpless OSU goalkeeper on a well struck free from just outside the 18 yard box. The Falcons dominated the rest of the game but couldn't come out of the game with a victory as OSU was able to get a goal over the Falcons goal line. Both teams earned a point in the final game of Saturday as they duelled to a 1-1 draw.

FINAL SCORE: FALCONS - 1     OSU - 1

FALCONS GOAL SCORER(S): NIKKI B.

The Pickering Power were able to win their two games on Saturday which put the Falcons out of any hope of playing past their third Round Robin Game. But the girls still wanted to use this game to their advantage, whether it be for practice or bragging rights. The coaches stressed a possession game which worked to their advantage. Although the Falcons opponent, Quinte West, were able to get a lucky goal off a bad bounce infront of Falcons goalie Julia, the coaches told the girls to stick to the strong play they had already been playing before the Quinte goal. The message worked as more possession play led to a foul in the box to force a penalty shot for the Falcons. Brianne was called out to take the shot and she answered the call as she placed a well struck shot in the top corner of the Quinte goalkeeper. The girls to a 1-1 tie into the half and came out with the same intensity in the second as Lisa was able to pounce on a rebound let out by the goalkeeper which put the Falcons in the lead for the rest of the game. Lisa was able to add some insurance in the last minute as she was able to hit a well hit ball into the top corner to put Quinte to sleep for good.

FINAL SCORE: FALCONS - 3     QUINTE WEST - 1

GOAL SCORERS: BRIANNE B. (PENALTY SHOT)

                    LISA S. (2)

The tournament provided some good experience for the Falcons as they prepare for their action in the WRSL league. The Falcons were able to place 2nd in their division in the tournament but unfortunately, only the top teams from the four divisions moved on to the semi-finals.  GREAT JOB GIRLS!

What a amazing weekend for both Falcons!
Both teams made it to the tournament Championship game undefeated !!!

Silver Medal  - Intermediate Falcons finished with 3 wins and 1 tie - 1 loss  in Strathroy Torunament &

Silver Medal - Premier Falcons finished with 4 wins - 1 loss in Barrie Torunament.

Especially for the Intermediates Falcons who have had very unlucky season openers, and kick their way to the championship game loosing a close one to London United Matrix. 2-0.

Premiers Falcons lost to Barrie A team 4 - 1 (last years tournament champions).  Falcons beat this team 2-1 during the pool play.

I only wish that we could have played a rubber match. (We had four injured players by the last game)

It was very exciting weekend for everyone with great soccer. It was a hot one!!!

Thanks to all parents who have provided everything the girls needed to make it there.

Congratulations Falcons!  We are very proud of your accomplishment over the weekend!

Coach Dan.

REGIONALS FINISH WITH 5 GAME UNBEATEN STREAK

The South Region squad capped off a season of noticeable improvement with a 5 game unbeaten streak, dropping just 3 games in the last half of the schedule.
On Saturday, the girls travelled to Georgetown and although they outplayed their opponents, they came away with a 1-1 tie. Emily scored 20 minutes into the second half before Georgetown netted an equalizer shortly after, after an unfortunate own goal.
Thanks to the schedulers at SRSL, the girls had to travel back to Niagara Falls on Sunday to finish off the season, and in what sounded like a physical affair, the girls once again jumped to an early lead, even though they were outplayed in half number one, before Niagara Falls equalized. Krista scored for the Falcons. The girls came out to play in half number two, but could not capitalize on the opportunities they created, with this one ending in another draw.
Thanks Gus and Dan (and Glen), for looking after the girls on this last weekend. As you could tell from our cell calls, they were on our minds.
What a great run in the last part of the year ladies, 2-3-4, after going 0-9 out of the gates. Your hard work, dedication and commitment paid off. Great work!!

PREMIER ACTION

Chatham got the first goal - a give away when our team broke down in our own 18 yard Box, not covering properly.

However, Jessica K. scored a beauty from the corner kick(a think it used to be a "Banana Kick") bounce off a Chatham defender and when in the net.  This game was shorten to 30 min. halves due to the rain and considering a long trip back to Chatham before the game even began.  We played an amazing one touch passes and excellent possession game in the second half.  Juane and made a perfect cross from the left side, passed through many players and bounced off Chatham defender and went in the net.  WOW!  Thank-you very much!  We'll take that!   Now the score is 2-1.

A great pass from Marlena to Jessica H making the run from the centre Mid hit the post and ball did not go into the net, towards the end of the game. It poured like "heck", but girls had a lot of fun in the rain.  With about 5 mins left, the game was called off due to the lightening.  Ref. called it a completed game.  Thank God!

Next is the SRSL game!!  Have a great time George and Joe!

CANADIAN FALCONS...............................................EH!!
The Falcons flew south of the border (followed some Canadian Geese), for their first outdoor tournament experience of 2006, The Mid American Soccer Classic in Fairfield Ohio. The tournament action got off to a cold start, both weather wise and on the field for the girls. After sparring with their opponent from Fairfield Ohio, in the first twenty minutes, the girls adjusted to the physical play and speed of the game and played a solid final third of the contest. The girls took the game to their opponent, and were unlucky not to be rewarded with a goal, with the game ending in a 0-0 tie. Lisa and Julia shared the shut-out. Later that afternoon, the girls met up with their second opponent in round robin play, the Cleveland Arsenal. Even though it was still early in the competition, the restriction of advancing only one team from our group of four, meant the girls needed to post some goals and maintain a clean sheet defensively. Once again some fine play displayed by the whole group, with Jodie and Maria registering the goals, in a 2-0 win. The story was poor finishing in this one, unfortunately, a clear sign of early season form. Julia and Lisa once again shred goalie duties in this one. Now it was on to day two and the match-up against the state champs from West Virginia. The earlier failure to register goals on the opposition, meant the girls needed a win in this one, as a tie meant elimination on goal differential. The girls played hard in this one, and were a little unfortunate to get called on a weak free kick outside our area. The resulting play created a scramble in the box, with an eventual shot lifted just under the crossbar, to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The Falcons now needed two goals to go through, and pushed players forward, but just couldn't find the back of the net. An eventual late counter attack, with 3 minutes remaining secured the win for the Eagles, who advanced from our pool, into the tournament final. Not sure yet if they won the tournament, but I wouldn't be surprised. ** UPDATE TOURNAMNET FINAL - UNIV. WEST VIRGINIA EAGLES 2 CLASSIC HAMMER CINCINNATI O All in all, a great tourney which provided skilled and physical opposition, and a great collection of ideas and information to help with our eventual line-up and tactical plan. Well done ladies!! We will eventually be firing on all cylinders!! Defensively, the girls were solid once again, and should be commended on their efforts. Congrats to Anna, Nikki and Julia P., on winning the Fair Play awards in the 3 games, as chosen by the opposing coaches. Lets keep working girls! We're on the right track, eh!

FULL FIELD TEST A SUCCESS
The Falcons first test for 2006, in a full field setting, proved to be a rewarding experience. The girls took to the Indoor Sports Complex in Oakville, a roster that included seven new members, under our new squad system, and surprised all with their ability to gel as a unit and stick to a tactical plan. Same old story at the back, as Lisa, Jodie, Lauren, Megan, Chelsey and Dana, limited the opposition attack to one well manufactured goal all day, paving the way for the rest of the crew to work their magic. Maria and Emily led the way on the score sheet, registering 3 goals each, with Nikki, Tori, Jenalle, Jodie and Katelyn, adding to the offensive output. The girls opened with a 2-1 win over Ajax, and wrapped up the round robin play, registering a 2-0 triumph over Barrie. These results gave the girls first place in group A, and a bye to the semi finals. Their semi final opponent was Richmond Hill B, and even though they surrendered the first goal, the girls rallied in typical fashion to register 5 unanswered goals, securing a spot in the final. In the final, the opponent was a familiar one, which we had met up with in the final at the Oscar tournament, also in Oakville. The girls once again found themselves down a goal, but responded with a great effort all around, to equalize 1-1 at the half, thanks to a well taken left footed volley by Katelyn. The girls stepped up their play in the second half and were rewarded when Emily manouvered her way into the Georgetown penalty area, and was brought down for a penalty. Shaking off her slight knock, she stepped up to the spot a converted her kick, giving the Falcons a well earned 2-1 win. The rest of the Oakville tournament squad benefited from the tireless work of Krista L, Kathleen, Brianne, Juane, and Sarah J. Well done ladies. A great test in a full field setting, with many lessons learned and a good guage as to the improvements to strive for. Can't wait to get outside!

BLACK SHOWS DARK SIDE AGAINST WHITE
vaughanfinal
For the second time in as many weeks, two Falcons squads met up in the semi final of an indoor tournament. The Black team rolled through the round robin portion of the event, without giving up a goal. They registered a 0-0 draw with Scarborough, a 2-0 win over the Toronto Nitros and finishing off with a 1-0 win over Whitby to clinch top spot in the group. Emillie C, Krista and Nikki were the goal scorers. Meanwhile, the Black team waited to find out who their semi final opponent would be as after a slight stumble in the round robin, the White team were forced into a penalty shot shoot-out to determine the team that would advance. Their opponent would be the Etobicoke Foxes. After a gruelling 11 player shoot-out contest, Meg converted her kick and Anetia saved the next shot, to earn the White team a game against the Falcons Black. Jodie, Grace, Kathleen, Jenalle, Meg, Jessica K, Tori, and Brianne converted their kicks. So now it was onto the semi final clash against the Black team, and the White squad seemed to ride a little momentum in this one and carried more of the play, but neither team could penetrate the opposing D. So onto penalties once again, and while Tori, Jessica, Marlena, Grace and Jodie converted for the white, the Black answered with succesful kicks from the spot by Nikki, Emillie, Sam, Stef and Katleyn. Sarah D. converted in the sudden death round and Lisa saved the 6th shot, to advance the Black team to the final. In an evenly played final, a momentary lapse in defensive coverage on a kick in, led to the opening goal for Scarborough, which would turn out to be the only goal allowed by the black team all day. Despite a valiant surge in the last 8 minutes, the girls could not find an equalizer and they came up on the sort end of a 1-0 scoreline. Congrats to the Scarborough West Rouge squad on a well earned victory, and a special congrats to both Falcon squads for a fine display of soccer all day. Thanks to Jim and Dan for your contributions throughout the day. See you guys Wednesday for scheduled training.

FALCONS WING WEARY IN GRIMSBY
The Falcons continued their Christmas tournament tour, landing in Grimsby, this past Monday. The girls took part in a game demanding a much faster pace and certainly more endurance, as this old "off the boards" style competition provided. In addition, the competition was of good quality as the girls competed against 3 South Region teams, two 94 teams from Burlington and the Saltfleet U13 girls. The White team, fresh off their Scrooge tournament win, could not muster up that same scoring touch in this one. They kicked off the day with a grudge match against the Black Falcons, a team they had eliminated 1-0, in the London tournament semi final. This time, the Black team gained a measure of revenge, registering the same 1-0 scoreline thanks to a goal by Megan P and a shut out from Stephanie. The white team managed a tie and 3 losses and failed to advance to the semi finals. Their shut out streak lasted 130 plus minutes, and their play got much better as they got used to the playing style. That was a great run, ladies. Well done Anetia. Now the black team (Megan P, Stephanie, Krista, Chelsey, Jodie, Jasmine, Taylor, Jocelyn, Nicole H, Nicole Band Jessica H) rolled on to register 2 ties and a loss in the remaining round robin games, and were showing the same steady improvement. Unfortunately fatigue caught up with them in the semi finals, as in their fifth game of the day, and having played back to back games, the girls just could not find the energy to complete a valiant comeback attempt, losing out to Burlington 2-1. Chelsey scored the lone goal for the black squad in the semi. Well Done girls. Two semi final finishes in two tournaments. Not too shabby!! The Falcons now fly into the Soccer Centre in Vaughan to complete their tour with two more team entries on Friday. Good luck girls.
