Eveswell Utd B 6 Vs Caerleon C 1

Our thanks go to Caerleon for agreeing to a change of venue for the match. The two sides played 8 a side and for the first few minutes Eveswell pinned back Caerleon into their own half, but trying to break down an eight man defence was not easy. The break came after Eveswell won a corner kick; Frankie took an awesome corner that curled the ball straight into the Caerleon net to put Eveswell 1 – 0 up. Frankie at this point had been playing everywhere, supporting his defence, winning the ball in mid field and passing to the strikers. Callum had a shot deflected and Ben had a shot go wide. Eveswell benefited from a poor kick out from the Caerleon keeper that was intercepted by Callum who had a shot, his attempt at goal was too powerful for the keeper to hold and Liam took a shot at the rebounding ball and stuck it in the back of the net. Eveswell were 2 – 0 up. As Eveswell settled down into the match players were given the chance to play in different positions and the defence players pushed up the pitch. Charlie, Ben and Jonathan all defended well and overlapped with the midfield with some nice passing. Frankie had a shot at goal deflected away from the goal and Liam watched a shot go over the bar. Liam then set up Tyler to score to put Eveswell 3 – 0 up. Soon after, the Caerleon keeper fumbled the ball and Liam had a shot go wide. Charlie battled his way through the Caerleon defence to set up Jonathan who had shot that went wide. Ben got involved in the action and took a thundering shot from the half way line to watch it go wide. Seb went on a run and had a shot that hit the back of the net to put Eveswell 4 – 0 up. Charlie was very composed at the back with his tackles and his passes set up Seb who had a shot go wide. Moggsie had not had to pull off a save during the first half.

In the second half Frankie went in goal. The team lost some shape in the second half as too many players went glory hunting for goals and forgot they were there to play for the team. Moggsie set up Tyler for a shot that went wide. Tyler had another attempt at goal but his chip was saved. Out of the blue a defensive error from Eveswell left a Caerleon player a clear run at goal, the player struck the ball well leaving Frankie no chance of saving it. The score was now 4 – 1. Eveswell went back on the attack and Seb set up Moggsie who couldn’t quite finish the ball off. Seb had a shot across the Caerleon goal that was deflected in by a Caerleon player to put Eveswell 5 – 1 up. Callum had a blasting shot saved by an excellent Caerleon keeper. Tyler crossed for Jonathan but the ball was intercepted. Soon after a goalmouth scramble involving Tyler and Jonathan resulted in Jonathan poking the ball into the Caerleon net. The score was 6 – 1 to Eveswell. Moggsie then crossed to Jonathan who had a shot cleared by the Caerleon keeper.

Overall a good performance let down by some players who tried to score goals for themselves rather than playing for the team.

Scorer: Frankie, Liam, Tyler, Jonathan, Sebastian 2

Eveswell Utd Bs 1 Vs Rogerstone Bs 1

A similar performance against Rogerstone B as last year (2 – 2) but not as good as it could have been. In the first half too many players were content to let Rogerstone be first to the ball and when Eveswell had possession they gave it away to cheaply. The second half showed an improvement but this side is capable of better performances than the one on display today. Players need to treat matches as tests; more self discipline is needed on match days.

For the first five minutes of the match both sides fought hard with the ball going end to end then Rogerstone put the pressure on and Eveswell faced three successive corners. The more Eveswell just booted the ball away the more a controlled Rogerstone played it back at them. Moggsie pulled off a great save from a point blank shot at the Eveswell goal. Eveswell then counter attacked and Liam had a shot saved. Charlie and Ben, with Frankie sat just in front, had a busy match holding off the Rogerstone attacks. Soon after Rogerstone chipped Moggsie and scored to put themselves 0 – 1 up in the match. Callum countered with a deep shot that just went over the bar. Moggsie faced another chip and made the save and a Liam/Tyler combination at the Rogerstone goal was deflected out. Rogerstone had four successive shots at the Eveswell goal but couldn’t add to their score. Just before half time Sebastian had a long shot that passed the Rogerstone keeper to pull the score back to 1 – 1. (Rumour has it that Seb has admitted that it was a cross)

In the second half Ben went in goal and was kept busy but did himself proud pulling off a number of saves. The Eveswell players picked themselves up in the second half and took the game to Rogerstone. Both Callum and Liam had early shots saved. Rogerstone countered and Ben pulled off a save. Liam had a great run and passed to Tyler who knocked it on to Frankie who watched his shot go across the mouth of the goal but not go in. Frankie had another shot saved. Frankie and Callum battled for everything in the middle of the pitch. Tyler picked up the ball and passed to Callum who fed it to Seb for a shot that went wide. Ben and Moggsie defended well with Moggsie pushing up and pressuring the Rogerstone players. Ben finished off the match with a number of stunning saves to keep Eveswell in the match and leave the honours even at 1 – 1.

Some poor passing and lack of ball control gave Rogerstone too much of the ball. Come on lads so much potential is hidden behind a lack of discipline; show us all you can play tighter and more disciplined against stronger opposition.

Scorer: Sebastian

Eveswell Utd Bs 5 Vs Pill C 3

Another mixed performance where the team showed great skill moving up with some slick passing and decent finishing resulting in some great goals. However they were sloppy in defence with some weak tackles and poor running back gifting Pill C some easy goals.

In the first half Ben went in goal and was kept reasonably busy between the posts with Jonathan and Charlie trying to close the Pill C attacks, Jonathan putting in some early tackles. Frankie had an early shot at goal that lacked power and was aimed straight at the keeper. However Liam was given a great pass from Frankie only to see Liam’s shot go over the bar. Soon after Frankie again found Liam with a lovely pass, Liam converted this time to put Eveswell 1 – 0 up. Whilst Eveswell were strong in attack they seemed asleep in defence, Pill were unlucky not to score from a corner when they headed the ball over the post. However Eveswell kept the pressure on as Seb laid on a superb pass for Liam to get his second, Eveswell were 2 – 0 up. Eveswell were busy ball watching during a Pill throw in deep in the Eveswell half and Ben was unable to keep the ball out as an unmarked Pill player had a shot at goal. The score was 2 – 1. Tyler laid on a terrific pass for Liam who scored his third to put Eveswell 3 – 1 up.   Liam soon had another shot which again went over the bar. Liam had a run at goal and passed to Frankie who scored this time. Charlie had a long shot from the half way line that went wide of the goal. Eveswell were 4 – 2 up. Ben made a succession of saves as Pill pushed deep into the Eveswell half and the defence gave them too much space however Pill managed to slip one past Ben to make it 4 – 2 at half time.

At half time Frankie went in goal and was soon pulling off saves or watching Pill shots go wide as the Eveswell defence pushed too deep and were not up to coping with Pill’s quick counter attacks.   Some great team work and passing between Ben, Seb, Tyler and Liam ensured Eveswell continued to threaten the Pill goal. Liam had another shot that went wide. Jonathan and Charlie made some good clearances. Ben and Seb both had shots at the Pill goal saved. Pill counter attacked and some weak defending allowed Pill a clean shot that Frankie was unable to stop - the score was 4 – 3 to Eveswell. Ben laid on some great passes to keep the pressure on Pill and Liam had another shot saved. Frankie pulled off another save to keep Eveswell in the lead, then Seb scored to put Eveswell 5 – 3 up. Tyler was unlucky not to get a goal when he pounced on a rebound and imaginatively chipped the Pill keeper who turned quickly and caught the ball in mid flight on the line but not fully over. Charlie was forced to put in some quick tackles to deal with the Pill thrusts into Eveswell’s half. Jonathan had a late strike from half way line that was saved by the Pill keeper. Pill had one last shot at the Eveswell goal that went wide. The final score was 5 – 3 to Eveswell.

Some attacking play was let down by some weak defending, Eveswell are letting in more goals these days as defenders push up too deep and are unable to cope with the opposition’s quick breaks. Individual discipline needs to come back into play where players are strong in their tackles, quick to pass and keep their shape. Some sloppy play is letting down what would have been an excellent performance.

Scorers: Liam 3, Frankie and Sebastian

Eveswell Team: Charlie Jones, Ben Blakesley, Frankie McQuillan, Tyler Flage, Sebastian Christopher, Liam Langdon and Jonathan Turzynski.

Pill Bs 3 Vs Eveswell Utd Bs 4

A mixed performance where the team showed how devastating they are in attack but there were too many players eager to search for goals and forget they had a goal to defend as well. The game was played with 8 a side. Some individual great performances but some players were clearly off form today. As seems to be the pattern these days the opposition (Pill B) got into the game quickly and kept Eveswell pinned back, Tyler cleared an early Pill shot. When Eveswell broke through it was overwhelming, Liam went on a run and laid on a great pass for Seb who slotted it away to put Eveswell 1 – 0 up. Liam, Tyler and Sebastian put together some nice passes and kept the pressure on Pill B. Liam and Seb again worked some nice passes with Seb setting up Liam who finished it putting Eveswell 2 – 0 up. Charlie defended well and made some great passes through the Pill players. Ben also got in some nice tackles to prevent Pill breaking through. Seb had a shot saved and another went over the bar. Callum battled in the middle to put in a great pass to Liam who couldn’t finish.   Frankie played deep making some decent clearances. Moggsie pulled off a stunning save from a point blank shot from Pill. Jonathan contributed with some nice tackles and passes. Eveswell wasted a number of corner kicks with players forgetting the set pieces learned in training although Tyler was unlucky not see his attempt go in. Against the play of things a poor goal kick rebounded off an Eveswell player into the path of a Pill player who stuck it away. The score was 2 – 1 to Eveswell.   Ben made it 3 – 1 before half time with a powerful shot that went through the keeper’s legs. Eveswell were 3 – 1.

In the second half Frankie went in goal and Moggsie battled in midfield, tackling and laying on some great passes. Pilll kept the pressure on and Callum made a clearance to help the Eveswell defence. Frankie pulled off a save but Pill took advantage of too many Eveswell players surging forward for glory and counter attacked well. Seb laid on a great pass to Liam who couldn’t finish. Callum had a couple of shots that went wide. Jonathan and Charlie had the opportunity to play in midfield and performed well. Moggsie then scored to put Eveswell 4 – 1 up but the cracks were appearing in the Eveswell formation and play. Tyler had a shot go wide. Then a series of mistakes allowed Pill back into the game, Pill broke through from the half way line without an Eveswell defender in sight. Frankie was unable to stop the shot. The score was 4 – 2. A poor goal kick went straight into the path of the Pill players who didn’t waste the opportunity and scored 4 – 3. The last few minutes were touch and go but Eveswell Bs hung on to make it 4 – 3.

We need to ensure that players cover the positions they are assigned to and concentrate on defending as well trying to get goals. More work is needed on the set pieces.

Scorers: Morgan, Ben, Sebastian and Liam

Eveswell Utd Bs 11 Vs Graig Bs 0

Again another brilliant performance, not so much for the goals but for the way they were made. All players were given an opportunity to play in different positions and all welcomed the opportunity putting in solid performances. The match started slowly for Eveswell as the Graig put some early pressure on, however as Eveswell pushed back they dominated the match. Callum set himself up in the middle to win a number of the Graig keeper’s kicks, Callum sent a few volleys back with some early long shots at the Graig goal but they were off target. Frankie had a nice pass to Tyler who couldn’t put it away. The break came when Ben, who had an outstanding performance, passed through the Graig team to find Callum who put it away. Eveswell were 1 – 0 up. Ben repeated his performance minutes later with a blinding pass to find Seb who put it away for his first goal for Eveswell to put the team 2 – 0 up. Seb had another shot but it was saved. Tyler got in on the act and scored to put Eveswell 3 – 0 up. Jonathan and Frankie defended well to ensure Morgan had a quiet spell in goal. Frankie laid on a pass for Seb who couldn’t put it away. Tyler and Frankie also had shots that wouldn’t go in. The team then repaid Ben for his passes and set him up to score, putting Eveswell 4– 0 up. Charlie passed to Frankie who put it in the net to make it 5 – 0 to Eveswell. Frankie and Callum forged a solid wall in the middle winning and distributing the ball to their team mates. Ben made it 6 – 0 before half time to round off his best performance of the season. Jonathan had a late shot but again it wouldn’t go in.

In the second half Eveswell started quietly, taking 10 minutes to get into scoring mode again. Ben went in goal for Morgan who clearly wanted to get in on the action. Jonathan laid on a pass for Seb who hit the post with his shot. Seb took on player after player to keep the pressure on the Graig. Charlie playing in midfield got stuck into the challenges and laid on some great passes. Tyler started the scoring again putting Eveswell 7 – 0 up. Morgan after seeing a number of shots saved finally stuck a shot in the net, 8 – 0. Ben made the only save for Eveswell of the game. Moggsie, eager for more, got his second and put Eveswell 9 – 0 up. Jonathan pounced on a rebound to get in on the action and the score sheet, to leave Eveswell at 10 – 0. The last goal came from a brilliant high pass from Charlie on the half way line to find Moggsie who converted for his hat-trick and the team’s 11th. The final score was 11 – 0, the best result of the season to date.

Well done. Good football will inevitably lead to good results and hard work will always shine out.

Scorers: Morgan 3, Ben 2, Tyler 2, Callum, Frankie, Sebastian and Jonathan

Eveswell Team: Morgan Pickett, Charlie Jones, Ben Blakesley, Frankie McQuillan, Callum Kemp, Tyler Flage, Sebastian Christopher and Jonathan Turzynski.

Maindee 0 Vs Eveswell Utd Bs 3

A fantastic match with the Bs back to their old winning ways the Bs passed well, tackled hard, defended collectively, put together great passes and had plenty of shots at goal. Eveswell United Bs lost their previous two games against Maindee 3 - 2 and 1 - 0, but this time the players put in a fantastic performance to be proud of and deserved the 0 – 3 win.

Callum battled hard for every ball and was rewarded with a nose bleed early in the match as a ball was kicked straight at his nose. Sebastian and Tyler complemented Callum in the middle battling for the ball and setting up Liam, who was back to his old self menacing the Maindee goal. Maindee didn’t sit back and battled hard but the combination of Frankie and Charlie in defence gave Moggsie a quiet spell in goal. Moggsie’s only save was from a hard pass back from Frankie forcing Moggsie to dive and clear the ball. The break for Eveswell came when they won a corner, Frankie took the corner and ran on to meet the rebound which he hit off the volley with his left foot leaving the Maindee keeper with no chance of saving it. Eveswell were 0 – 1 up. Seb was a revelation on the right as he battled for every ball and laid on some nice passes. Seb tackled and won the ball, looked up and found Liam who put it away to put Eveswell 0 – 2 up. Ben went into midfield and did his bit, closing down the opposition and laying on some nice passes. Liam had another shot at goal which rebounded off a Maindee player, Tyler putting in a strong performance picked up the loose ball and struck it under the Maindee keeper to make it 0 – 3 to the Bs.

In the second half Frankie went in goal and Moggsie went in defence. Moggsie battled hard and combined well with Charlie to give Frankie a quiet time in the second half. Frankie’s only touches in goal were goal kicks which succeeded in clearing the Maindee players for Tyler to pick up and threaten the Maindee goal. Whilst there were no second half goals the players continued to battle hard and press Maindee with Callum and Moggsie both having strong shots that were saved by the Maindee keeper. The highlight in the second half was Seb’s battling run from defence to the edge of the Maindee box. Seb battled his way through every player, two or three at a time, until exhaustion finally took over and Maindee won back the ball. Frustration crept into some of the Maindee players as one lashed out at Charlie who had him in his pocket throughout the match, Callum and Tyler were both felled by some nasty tackles but continued playing on. Eveswell held off Maindee and held on to their 0 – 3 to win the match.

Well done lads you made us all very proud.

Scorers Frankie, Liam and Tyler

Eveswell Team: Morgan Pickett, Charlie Jones, Ben Blakesley, Frankie McQuillan, Callum Kemp, Tyler Flage, Sebastian Christopher and Liam Langdon.

Eveswell Utd Bs 0 Vs Lliswerry 1

A strange glowing object was seen over Corrie Park before the match. Some of the older ones thought they remembered seeing the object before - it was called the Sun. The younger ones, looking confused, agreed to Google this strange object to get to the bottom of the mystery. Whatever the object was it was a great day for a match.

Both sides played hard and defended well, for Eveswell it was the lack of finishing that prevented them from gaining the honours. Tyler had a great shot at goal blocked when it bounced off the Lliswerry keeper. Callum had two shots at goal, the first went wide and the second was tipped over the bar. Seb had a header to clear the ball from the Eveswell goal. Liam had a good run and shot at the Lliswerry goal which was saved. Frankie defended well stopping a Lliswerry shot with a great clearance however Lliswerry put the pressure on Eveswell. Lliswerry had another shot that went wide. Jonathan defended well and Seb worked hard to get back and defend. Moggsie pulled off a good save and Lliswerry had another shot go wide.

In the second half Ben went in goal and pulled off a good save from a Lliswerry corner. Liam linked up with a nice pass to Seb but Lliswerry defended well. Frankie covered the pitch end to end and put in some solid tackles, one was heard from the other side of the pitch. The breakthrough came for Lliswerry as a poor tackle/clearance was followed by a number of defenders being too slow to close down the Lliswerry attack allowing a Lliswerry a shot that went in. Lliswerry were 1 – 0 up. Callum tried a quick touch and shoot from the kick off that would have gone if the Lliswerry keeper had not reacted quickly enough. Lliswerry continued to pile on the pressure and put the ball over the bar. Moggsie took a turn up front and was unlucky to see his shot go wide.    For all the effort Eveswell couldn’t put the ball in the net and the match finished 1 – 0 to Lliswerry. Some players were again guilty of getting into good goal scoring positions but holding on too long to make their job more difficult when trying to score.

Eveswell Team: Morgan Pickett, Charlie Jones, Ben Blakesley, Frankie McQuillan, Callum Kemp, Tyler Flage, Jonathan Turzynski, Sebastian Christopher and Liam Langdon.

Cromwell 3 Vs Eveswell Utd Bs 0

The second match of the year did not fare well but the highlight of the match was seeing Seb start his first match of the season (bureaucracy over his license had stopped him playing before). Seb did not disappoint showing great pace and control of the ball and he had an early shot at goal go wide, He has shown great improvement and will only get better with more matches under his belt. Ben in goal pulled off a couple of saves early in the match and Jonathan put in a solid performance in defence clearing the ball away. Early into the match Eveswell showed they were rusty in their finishing, this didn’t improve as the game went on and prevented the Bs from getting onto the score sheet. Seb had another shot that was high and wide. Cromwell pounced on a defensive mistake as an Eveswell player turned his back on the ball, another player failed to close down the play and Cromwell stuck the ball away to make it 1 – 0 . Liam counter attacked with a shot that was saved.

In the second half Liam made a run and shot into the side of the Cromwell net. However to be fair to Cromwell, Eveswell were boxed into their own half at times. Frankie in goal in the second half pulled off a save. Eveswell had another shot go wide. Cromwell went 2 – 0 up with a shot that gave Frankie no chance of saving. In an Eveswell counter attack Tyler laid on a nice pass for Seb who shot wide. Seb passed to Callum to set him up for a shot, again only to see the shot go wide. Later in the match Callum had a great run at goal only to be cynically taken out with a foul. The free kick was taken by Moggsie who touched the ball for Callum to shoot, it was a great effort only stopped by a great save from the Cromwell keeper.

Some players were happy at times to stand and let the game go on around them, it was when these lapses of concentration occurred that the team was punished. Players need to ensure they do not shrink from their individual battles on the pitch. The players need to work on their runs after they pass, to be in positions where they can take shots at the opposition’s goals. Again Eveswell squandered too many opportunities by having too many touches on the ball before having a shot.

Eveswell Team: Morgan Pickett, Charlie Jones, Ben Blakesley, Frankie McQuillan, Callum Kemp, Tyler Flage, Jonathan Turzynski, Sebastian Christopher and Liam Langdon.

Eveswell Utd Bs 1 vs Caerleon Bs 3

This was the first match the Bs played since December and the team’s lack of match practice was shown up by Caerleon B. Caerleon B were a much stronger side, both physically and tactically, than the side that faced Eveswell Bs in September. In the first half it was end to end action with both sides evenly matched. Passes between Liam, Tyler and Callum, led to Callum having a shot that went wide. Frankie was strong on the right getting in some good tackles and passes. A goal from Callum was disallowed as Callum was judged to have caught the Caerleon keeper in a fiercely fought challenge for the ball. Callum had another shot saved by the Caerleon keeper. Callum had a few chances to score but instead passed to Liam and Tyler who were closed down by a solid Caerleon defence or were blocked by the keeper. The break came for Caerleon before half time as the Eveswell defence stood back and allowed Caerleon to play their way into the box and score. Caerleon were 1 - 0 up.

In the second half a fantastic goal for Eveswell evened the score up to 1 – 1. Ben passed to Callum who went on a run through the Caerleon defence and passed to Liam who slotted it away. However Eveswell’s play in the second half fell apart as the lack of passing in midfield starved the strikers of goal scoring chances and the defence gave Caerleon too much space on the ball. Jonathan put in a great second half in defence with strong tackles going in and plenty of running to close down the opposition. Unfortunately for Jonathan when running back to clear a Caerleon shot off the line he hit the ball into Moggsie’s head and the ball rebounded into the net. Caerleon were 2 – 1 up. Moggsie saw more of the action in the second half pulling off a few saves but with a defence that seemed to be static most of the time it was an uphill task and Caerleon eventually made it 3 – 1.

Overall it was good to play a strong side and Eveswell need to respond to the physical challenges of the game. A bit more passing and some finishing practice should turn things around.

Eveswell Team: Morgan Pickett, Charlie Jones, Ben Blakesley, Frankie McQuillan, Callum Kemp, Tyler Flage, Jonathan Turzynski and Liam Langdon.

Caerleon Cs 0 Vs Eveswell Utd Bs 10

For Eveswell it was a goal fest giving them a nice finish to the season before the Christmas break. Although two minutes into the match it was clear who was going to win Eveswell kept playing as a team and demonstrated some nice team play. The game was won in the midfield and Caerleon only had one shot at Eveswell’s goal all match. Seconds after kick off Liam won the ball and had a shot saved. Callum had a nice run and passed to Liam who had a shot rebound back out; his second shot went in to put Eveswell 1 – 0. Frankie had a shot saved. Tyler intercepted a poor goal kick out and passed to Callum who had a shot that went in off the post. 2 – 0. Liam then set up Tyler who scored to put Eveswell 3 – 0 up. Eveswell read the game well and battled for every goal kick to pressure Caerleon, another interception went to Liam who finished it off to put Eveswell 4 – 0 up. Caerleon managed a quick break and a shot that went wide.   Ben had a Steven Gerrard style shot just miss the goal. Callum had another shot saved by the keeper. Liam set up Callum for another shot and Charlie playing up front had a shot saved. Frankie started a move from the back passing to Liam who passed to Charlie, Charlie’s shot this time went in 5 – 0. Callum had another shot go wide and Ben picked up an interception and just missed his shot.

In the second half as Moggsie went up front and Ben went in goal it was business as usual. Liam battled to get the ball out of the corner area and passed to Callum who beat the keeper to make it 6 – 0. Moggsie won the ball and passed to Liam who had a shot and Callum put away the rebound to make it 7 – 0. Moggsie had a shot go wide. Callum then went on a great run and put in the perfect cross for Tyler but he couldn’t reach it.   Moggsie then intercepted the ball, had a little run and had a shot which went in to put Eveswell 8 – 0 up. Tyler and Moggsie played some great one-two’s to pull Caerleon apart only to see Tyler’s shot tipped over the bar by the Caerleon keeper. Callum intercepted the ball and passed to Liam who couldn’t put away his shot. Liam took a recently practised corner kick which was converted by Moggsie. 9 – 0. Frankie took on and passed the Caerleon keeper to pass to Tyler who couldn’t quite put it away.   The final goal came when Callum had a shot pushed out by the Caerleon keeper to Tyler who finished it off to make it 10 – 0 to Eveswell.

A relatively easy match but the players kept playing as a team, passing well and got the rewards they deserved. Well done lads and have a great Christmas.

Eveswell Utd Bs 3 Vs Pill Cs 1

A cold, wet and windy day had its effect on the team as they started a little sluggish in the first half. There were chances to score but the players couldn’t put them away. Jonathan had an early chance with a shot across goal but was cleared away by Pill and Tyler just couldn’t quite convert the rebound. Callum had a shot that was wide of the goal followed by Jonathan placing another shot wide. Ben got in on the act and also couldn’t finish. Moggsie had a relatively quiet half pulling off the occasional save and Charlie was a mountain in defence. Callum treated the match to some skill as he played ‘keepy up’ with his head and fired off a shot but the ball would not go in. Just before half time Callum went on a solo run and was forced wide by the Pill defence. It was 0 – 0 at half time.

In the second half Frankie went in goal and Moggsie moved up front. Eveswell started passing and playing more as a team. The break came from a great corner from Ben which Moggsie volleyed into the Pill goal giving the keeper no chance.   Eveswell were 1 – 0 up. A pass from the back found Moggsie who laid on a great pass to Callum who put it away. Eveswell were 2 – 0 up. Pill fought their way back into the game when Eveswell failed to clear the ball from a goal mouth scramble and Pill were rewarded with a goal. The score was 2 – 1. Soon after Frankie pulled off a cracking save to keep Eveswell in front. Charlie continued to break down the Pill attacks. Liam had a great run from the Eveswell goal area into the Pill goalmouth but the effort couldn’t be put away. Ben took a clever short corner to Tyler who was unlucky not to see go his shot go in.   Moggsie pushed past a number of Pill players and again laid on a great pass for Callum to finish off neatly finishing the game at 3 – 1 to Eveswell.

Malpas 0 Vs Eveswell Utd Bs 1

Forever known as the ‘Battle of Rougemont’ this game should stay evermore enshrined in the hearts of the Eveswell United B players. When all other matches were off due to the poor weather Malpas and Eveswell United Bs went head to head. The journey to the ground was a bit of an epic after waiting 15 minutes at Rougement School, navigator Andy Pickett took the squad for a picturesque drive through a near by industrial estate before deciding we had better get to the match. It was worth the journey to see Liam sporting his new go-faster haircut. The Bs never really had a chance to warm up before kick off and it showed in the first 10 minutes of the match with Malpas putting pressure on Eveswell. Moggsie made some great saves early on to help steady nerves, aided by Charlie in defence. Little did Malpas know that Moggsie was just warming up and proved to be the difference as Malpas just couldn’t get the ball into the net. Move over Van der Sar, Moggsie is threatening your place in the squad!!! After absorbing some pressure and losing the ball too easily the Bs warmed up. Ben put through a nice pass to find Frankie who took on and skilled three Malpas players to get through and pass to Liam who had a shot. Tyler picked up the rebound and had another shot and it bounced off the keeper’s leg to fall to Liam who placed it in the net. Eveswell Utd Bs were 1 – 0 up. The players navigated their way through a large sticky pitch as the wind and rain slowed them down to hold onto the lead at half time.

In the second half Eveswell faced some heavy pressure from Malpas but Charlie and Frankie managed to keep Malpas sufficiently far back so that they could only manage long shots. Moggsie got to every shot and put in a performance of a lifetime, there were so many highlights to choose from but closing down the Malpas striker to make a point blank save was one of them and a great diving save another. Callum joined in to give Eveswell a much needed boost. Jonathan had a run at goal and had a shot just go wide, then minutes later he had another run on goal and had a shot saved by the keeper. Callum made a few runs but couldn’t cross it quickly enough for a team mate to pick up. Ben had a nice header to clear a Malpas shot in front of goal and made some good clearances. In the final seconds Tyler had a run on the Malpas goal but held on too long as he was closed down. The whistle went and Malpas despite the number of shots at the Eveswell goal couldn’t get back into the game.

What a day, well played lads, another clean sheet and a good result. Last season Malpas won this fixture 5 – 0, you have shown everyone how far you have come.

Eveswell Utd Bs 10 Vs Civil Service 0
A ten out of ten performance with 10 goals to prove it. The Bs played good football and got the just desserts they deserved.

Just after kick off Callum made a solo run into the Civil Service half and had a shot that went over the cross bar. Soon after some goal mouth action in the Civil Service box allowed Tyler a chance to snatch the ball from the keeper but his shot was cleared by a Civil Service defender. Callum made use of an Eveswell throw in to have a superb shot in the far corner putting Eveswell 1 – 0 up. Eveswell faced a fraught few minutes when they defended a number of Civil Service corners then Eveswell had four successive corners in a row finalising with Liam having a shot that went wide. The second goal came from a corner by Frankie, Liam received it short and had a shot, Civil Service tried to clear the shot which ‘pin balled’ into the net to put Eveswell 2 – 0 up. Moggsie made a couple of saves, one from a Civil Service shot from the half way line. The third goal was a superb team effort with Liam lobbing the ball to Tyler who chipped the Civil Service keeper to put Eveswell 3 – 0 up. Liam had another shot that went wide. Frankie had a shot across into the far corner of the Civil Service goal, there was a hint it could have been an own goal as a Civil Service player touched the ball. However Frankie claimed the touch by the Civil Service player was when the ball had crossed the line and claimed the goal for himself. 4 – 0. Jonathan was involved in a scrabble in front of the Civil Service goal and Liam picked up the loose ball to put Eveswell 5 – 0. Just before the half time whistle Ben made a solo run into the Civil Service half and had a shot that went wide.

In the second half Ben went in goal. Eveswell carried on where they left off with Callum a tower of strength in the centre of the pitch linking up well with Tyler, Frankie and Ben. Tyler passed the ball to Morgan who had a shot that went over the cross bar. A poor goal kick from Civil Service landed at Liam’s feet, Liam had a shot that went wide.    Liam then made a run and passed to Morgan who had a shot, Tyler picked up the rebound and stuck it in the net to put Eveswell 6 – 0 up. A corner kick from Liam landed at Charlie’s feet, Charlie did not hesitate and booted the ball high and over the top of the Civil Service keeper to put Eveswell 7 – 0 up. Liam set up Morgan who finished the ball off to put Eveswell 8 – 0 up. Civil Service had a rare break into the Eveswell that was dealt with swiftly by Charlie to ensure the Civil Service shot went wide. Frankie had a Steven Gerrard style shot from distance that went in to put Eveswell 9 – 0 up. Liam had a great run and passed to Callum who ran the ball into the Civil Service goal, 10 – 0. Morgan had a run at the Civil Service defence who managed to clear the ball away. Tyler intercepted the ball and ran into the Civil Service box and passed to Liam who passed to Jonathan whose shot went wide. Callum tried to run the ball in for a last goal but his effort went wide. As Eveswell congratulated themselves on a great game Ben confessed he didn’t touch the ball in goal in the second half.

Well played lads, another excellent result.

Riverside Bs 1 Vs Eveswell Utd Bs 3
This was a good result against a Riverside team that contained a number of A side players. Eveswell improved their performance from last week’s match. They passed well and helped each other out. Eveswell faced some early pressure from Riverside and after the first five minutes started to break into the Riverside half. Callum linked up well with Liam throughout the game and they were always a danger to the Riverside defence. Callum laid on a pass for Liam to have a shot, this was followed up by another set up from Callum and shot from Liam that hit the post. Eveswell went 1 – 0 following a poor throw out from the Riverside keeper that landed at Frankie’s feet, Frankie returned the ball with a superb volley that gave the Riverside keeper no chance of saving. With Eveswell’s nerves settled the team started to play some good football with some good passes between Ben, Callum, Liam and Frankie. Tyler got into the match setting up Liam for a great shot that was stopped by a superb save from a strong Riverside keeper. Tyler then won the ball for Eveswell and passed to Callum, Callum set up Frankie who put the ball away to put Eveswell 2 – 0 up. Moggsie had to make the occasional clearance and some great saves. Charlie started off a little nervous but soon got into his stride with a series of strong tackles and clearances. Callum then had a shot go wide. Riverside were unlucky to see a shot hit the cross bar and bounce out. Soon after Moggsie pulled off a great save in the air.

In the second half Frankie went in goal and Moggsie had a stint in defence and up front. Liam crossed brilliantly in front of the Riverside goal for Tyler, who even had a chance to move onto his left foot before slotting the ball away. Eveswell were 3 – 0. Frankie made a save from a corner, however he was unable to stop a top corner shot from Riverside to get them back in the game 3 – 1. A few more saves from Frankie kept Eveswell in the match as Eveswell soaked up the pressure from Riverside. Charlie was tackling as hard as ever and Moggsie made a crucial slide tackle to clear a dangerous Riverside attack. Ben put some fantastic through balls to Callum and Liam to set them up for a number of attacks on the Riverside goal. Ben took the ball from the back and set up Liam with a brilliant through ball, Liam had a shot only to see it saved. Moggsie had a shot at goal saved in the dying minutes of the match.

Well played lads, an excellent result.

Eveswell Utd Bs 0 Vs Liswerry Stars 2
Not a good match as far as the Bs were concerned there were few highlights amid a mediocre performance. Eveswell didn’t seem to wake up until ten minutes into the first half and by then they were trailing. An early defensive error allowed Liswerry an easy shot at goal which they put away, Moggsie had no chance. It never looked like Eveswell were going to get back into the match as the lack of passing, not getting to the ball first and poor finishing meant that Liswerry were never really in danger of losing their lead. Frankie set up Liam early in the match from a throw in to see Liam shoot over the cross bar. Frankie then had a shot that went wide. Callum went on a ‘Forrest Gump’ style run from defence to the Liswerry’s goalmouth but failed to shoot when he had the chance and ran the ball wide. Frankie tried to get back and defend whenever he could, but Charlie was the most consistent in the first half closing down the Liswerry players and displaying some fine distribution.

It was a bit more of a gritty performance in the second half with a bit more fight from Eveswell, but the basic problems hampered the side ensuring Eveswell were never really in the match. Ben went in goal and his first touch of the ball was picking the ball out from the back of the net as Liswerry went 2 – 0 early in the half. Ben put in a brilliant performance and pulled off a save from Frankie who tried to clear a ball away from the Liswerry players but had too much power on it. Ben’s brilliance in goal saved Frankie’s blushes. Ben pulled off another stunning save as he plucked a high shot from the air. Morgan made a couple of runs on the Liswerry goal but couldn’t get a shot in.   Tyler had a shot that went wide and Liam had a shot straight at the Liswerry keeper who stopped the ball going in.

Eveswell Utd Bs 1 Vs Corinthians Bs 8
Eveswell B played Corinthians B, one of the strongest sides in Newport, and were given a football lesson. Eveswell B started off well absorbing pressure from Corries and getting in a few chances on goal but as the game progressed the difference between the sides became obvious. Eveswell B gave Corries too much space on the ball and were happy to see the opposition win the ball first and dictate the pace of the game. Eveswell B had a few chances but were faced with a first class keeper in goal for Corries. Jonathan had an early chance with a run on the Corries goal and a shot that went wide. The lack of passing meant that chances were difficult but Liam and Callum both had shots saved by the Corries keeper. Soon after Moggsie was called into action, pulling off save after save as Corries put pressure on the Eveswell goal. Corries got their first as Eveswell made a goal clearance but failed to make it safe and players walking on the pitch made it easy for Corinthians to go 1 – 0 up. Ben had a shot saved and Corries put away another to go 2 – 0 up before half time.

In the second half Eveswell B surrendered the game to Corries as they watched the game go on around them. Few players were battling for the ball with the exception of Charlie at the back who put in one of his best performances of the season. Frankie grew stronger as the game went on and made some great tackles. However there appeared to be an invisible line on the pitch where the Eveswell midfield rarely crossed to help an out-numbered defence. Corinthians B scored five more goals in the second half and Charlie added a sixth as he headed the ball into his own net. Great header – wrong goal! Although Corries managed to get a number of balls past Moggsie he made a number of great saves to keep Corries down to single figures. Eveswell had a late resurgence when Liam put through a brilliant pass to Callum who slipped it past the Corinthians keeper.

Eveswell B players need to get back to basics: close down the opposition, be first to the ball, look for the easy pass rather than hold on too long and lose possession, and help out the defence when under pressure. We need to look and learn from Corries who played well as a team and showed us how to do it.

Rogerstone C’s 4 Vs Eveswell Utd B’s 3
The score line flattered Eveswell who were under constant pressure for most of the game. As the game went on it was clear that the majority of players had not prepared themselves for the match. Passing was a rare commodity, players were often out of position and there was little sign of Eveswell wanting to beat Rogerstone to the ball.   Despite relatively poor play Eveswell again managed to bag three goals but let the opposition come back into the game as midfielders rarely tracked back and help out-numbered defenders.

Without dwelling on the negative too much the players did, on rare occasions, show some nice touches. The game started with Charlie and Jonathan in defence soaking up the pressure. Tyler sent a nice pass to Ben, who had a shot at goal. Ben then set up Jonathan who had a shot go wide, Ben followed up with another shot that went wide. Moggsie had to hold off a number of shots at the Eveswell goal. Some respite occurred when Callum went on a run on the left side and watched his tight angled shot go into the far corner of the Rogerstone goal. Eveswell were 1 – 0 up. Frankie put through a brilliant pass to Ben who had a great shot stopped by a great Rogerstone save. Rogerstone managed a header just before half time to equal the score 1 – 1.

In the second half Liam went up front, joined by Moggsie as Ben went in goal. Both sides played 8 a side. Ben pulled off a couple of good saves. Liam showed his presence by scoring within 5 minutes from a tight angle that looked impossible to go in. Eveswell were 2 – 1 up. Little went right after this as midfielders stood and watched a number of Rogerstone players out number the Eveswell defence to score an equaliser.   Liam, trying to make up for an absent Eveswell midfield, was every where on the pitch. Charlie had a solid and consistent time in defence but his efforts were not matched by his team mates. Rogerstone went 3 – 2 up when Moggsie watched a brilliant header go in his own net. He made up for it with a solid free kick that bounced off a Rogerstone defender and nut-megged the keeper. The score was 3 – 3. Rogestone always looked more dominant on the break, they played as a team and passed well and got the winner late in the match.

Whilst the Bs are scoring and going ahead in the game there was little sign of hard work from most of the players. Individual battles for the ball were lost all over the pitch, passing was non existent with some players holding onto the ball too long and possession was given away far too easy. More concentration and team work is required if players want to improve and see some wins.

Eveswell Utd B’s 3 Vs Riverside A’s 3
The team have finally showed how far they have come, they took on a strong A side and were unlucky not to walk away with the win. Wainer started off in goal as Moggsie was enjoying a rainy day in Tenby. Eveswell were a little nervous to begin with but soon settled down after they went 1 – 0 up from a corner. Liam took up position on the near side ready for Ben’s corner. Liam’s presence clearly rattled the Riverside keeper and defender who knocked Ben’s perfect corner into their own net. A more confident Eveswell passed the ball around and had a few shots at the Riverside goal. Dependable Charlie, supported by Frankie, forced Riverside back and Wainer coped well with Riverside’s long shots at the Evswell goal. A great goal kick out from Wainer was picked up Liam who controlled it well and passed to Ben who put the ball into the far corner, Eveswell were 2 – 0 up. Callum had a shot that went wide and Liam had another shot saved. Tyler picked up the loose balls on the left and despite facing a Riverside player twice his height and build had a powerful shot blocked by a Riverside defender.   Jonathan, Eveswell’s utility man, took on a Riverside player, battled his way through and slotted the ball away to put Eveswell 3 – 0. A lack of concentration in defence saw Riverside break through and nutmeg Wainer to bring the score back to 3 – 1.. Riverside followed this up with another goal before half time as tired midfielders failed to get back and help an out numbered Eveswell defence. At half time the score was 3 – 2 to Eveswell.

In the second half Frankie went in goal and Wainer went into defence. Wainer was in the thick of the action straight away supported by Charlie. Frankie pulled off an early save to settle his confidence. The resulting goal kick set Liam up on a run and a shot that was saved by the Riverside keeper. Frankie cleared a shot out of the Eveswell goal with his head.   Callum went on a solo run and struck a powerful shot over the crossbar. Liam had a shot go wide. Frankie struck another goal kick, this time to Ben, who set up Liam to see another shot go wide (it was just not Liam’s day). Frankie pulled off three magnificent saves in row to keep Eveswell in the game and the Charlie and Wainer double act forced Riverside back. However Riverside equalised the match with a long and powerful shot that Frankie had no chance of saving. It was now 3 - 3. Eveswell had a last minute shot and rebound shot saved by a brave Riverside keeper who was injured for his efforts but kept his side in the game.

This Eveswell United B side are holding their own against A sides and regularly scoring goals, a promising start to the season.

Caerleon B’s 1 Vs Eveswell Utd B’s 3
A great performance from the whole team who put in lots of effort and came away with a deserved victory. Caerleon started the game with a shot at Eveswell that was scrambled away by the defence and finally saved by Moggsie. Eveswell soon got to grips with the game and piled the pressure on Caerleon. An Eveswell throw in led to Callum having a shot that went straight across the Caerleon goal but didn’t go in. Callum and Liam linked up well throughout the match working for each other and the team. Callum took the on the Caerleon defence with one of his many runs and passed to Liam who put it wide of the post. Charlie and Frankie were solid in defence breaking down most of the Caerleon attacks. Ben and Tyler on the wings ensured Callum and Liam had plenty of service as they battled for the ball and put in some fine passes. A long pass from Frankie set Liam up on a run who had a shot at goal only saved by some excellent keeping from Caerleon. Charlie set up Callum for a run and shot at goal and again it was saved. Callum went on a run and put in a superb cross for Tyler who couldn’t quite put it away. The break came when a Caerleon player handled the ball. Frankie took the free kick to set Liam up who slotted the ball in the net. Eveswell went ahead 1 – 0. Moggsie was called into action to clear a loose ball scrambling around the Eveswell goal area. Callum put Eveswell 2 – 0 before half time with a great shot into the far corner that beat the Caerleon keeper.

The second half was always going to be a test of nerves where tiredness and mistakes have led Eveswell to concede easy goals in the past matches. The second half started strong with a long throw out by Moggsie that was picked up by Liam who ran with the ball and had a shot at goal. The partnership between Callum and Liam continued but the constant running around finally caught up with Callum who dropped back into defence for a breather. Tyler put in a nice cross to see the Caerleon defence scramble it away and Ben had a shot that went wide. Caerleon took advantage of the tired Eveswell midfield, who failed to come back and help an out numbered defence, and following some basic Eveswell errors were free to have a shot at an empty goal, the score was 2 -1. Ben responded within minutes with a cross in front of goal that to everyone’s delight ended up in the net, Eveswell were 3 – 1 up. Moggsie was distraught over the earlier error but battled on and within minutes pulled off a series of crucial saves to ensure Eveswell kept the lead. Tyler had a shot go wide and Charlie kept cool in defence with some nice ‘have some’ clearances to reduce the pressure on Moggsie. Frankie watched a late shot go wide before the match ended.

A magnificent team effort from everyone led to a thoroughly deserved victory. Well done lads.

Eveswell Utd B’s 2 Vs Whiteheads Graig 2

This was a match Eveswell dominated and but for a brilliant Graig keeper the match could easily have been 12 – 2 or more. In the first half Eveswell laid siege to the Graig goal with Liam raining in shots. Callum was strong in the centre winning the ball, challenging the opposition and worked some nice one twos with Liam. Frankie put in some great challenges and had a shot at goal saved. Callum then had two more shots one just inching wide of the post. Ben had a great shot and Callum had another go at goal. Moggsie had a quiet half but coped with the occasional threat at the Eveswell goal. Charlie, Ben and Jonathan broke down most of the opposition attacks and gave Moggsie great protection. Tyler laid on a great pass for Liam to shoot and Liam followed up with another shot. Liam then laid on a superb pass for Tyler to skim the crossbar. When everyone thought the ball just was not going in Liam went on a solo run past four Graig players and put the ball away to put Eveswell 1 – 0 just before half time.

In the beginning of the second half it was business as usual with Tyler having a shot saved and Frankie nearly scoring from a corner. Callum then went on a solo run passing a number of Graig players and scored to put Eveswell 2 – 0 up. Callum followed this with a superb pass and Tyler was waiting to put it away but the efforts of the Graig keeper kept Eveswell’s score line down. Charlie, Ben and Jonathan continued to challenge well to win the ball back for Eveswell. Tired legs and some confusion lead to the Graig getting back into the game. Moggsie uncharacteristically spilled a save to see a Graig player put the ball away, 2 - 1. Following an injury to a Graig player the game carried on for a few minutes with six a side. Due to a communication mix up Eveswell were playing six against seven, it was then Graig leapt on their opportunity and gained an equaliser, 2 - 2. Tired legs were probably more at fault as a number of players watched an out numbered Eveswell defence struggling to clear the ball but did not get back to help out.

Overall it was a great game with many more positives than negatives. All the players should feel proud of their performance.   Some great football was played at times and the side are scoring goals, winning challenges as well as defending well. As the season goes on the players will gain more stamina and strength to help them through the second halves.

Eveswell Team: Morgan Pickett, Charlie Jones, Ben Blakesley, Frankie McQuillan, Jonathan Turzynski, Callum Kemp, Tyler Flage and Liam Langdon.

A's Report to Appear

Pill A 6 Vs Eveswell Utd B’s 2
The score line makes you think this was a walk over, the match was far from it.   Both teams agreed to play 8 a side. Eveswell began their first game of the season a little sluggish, passes were poor and the team were slow to intercept. Moggsie, starting in goal, was forced to pull a couple of saves early into the match and Pill were unlucky to hit the cross bar. However Eveswell became more composed as the game went on and the defence more settled. Jordan had a shot saved. Tyler on the left made some great challenges and Ben pushed deep into the Pill half. Jonathan despite recovering from a broken toe in the summer put in a solid performance. Ben put through a great pass for Jordan to put away. Eveswell were 1 – 0 up. Pill equalised with a shot that hit the cross bar bounced off Moggsie and went in, he didn’t have a chance to stop it. Charlie and Frankie in defence gave the team the confidence to push up and keep he pressure on Pill. Frankie tackled everything in sight. At half time the teams were 1 – 1 and evenly matched.

The coaches decision to swap Moggsie and Frankie around at half time proved disastrous for the team. Pill scored 4 goals in quick succession within five minutes of the second half to put the game beyond Eveswell. Eveswell pushed back into the Pill half and Liam had a shot saved. The team started settling down, Evewell defence picked up as they defended one corner after another and Frankie made a few good saves. Liam had another shot which the Pill keeper deflected away towards Callum who clinically put it away. Pill managed to get a final goal to make it 6 – 2.

For the first match it wasn’t a bad game, Eveswell Utd Bs were against an A side and managed to play as good as them in the first half and get 2 goals.
