Eunices Rinky Dink Basketball: 2011-12 Season

Eunices opens up season with win over GPA
ball on fire

We opened up our 2011-12 season today with a big win over a good GPA team from Evans. GPA has one of the best coaches in the Boys/Girls Club system in Kevin Mallon, so I knew this one would be a tough game. Both teams played very hard and both will have very good seasons if they continue to give the type of effort they gave out on the court today.

The 1st quarter was tight the entire way. Luke Wyatt gave GPA an early lead but we came right back with a basket from Connor Brady. Cannon England would give us a 4-1 lead with a basket of his own. Both teams exchanged a few free throws and we would lead 5-3 after the first five minutes of play. The 2nd quarter both teams continued to play very aggressive defense. It looked like a football game out there at times. Kolton Kennon sank a couple of big baskets for us to give us a 9-5 lead. GPA would hit a bucket right before half to pull within 9-7. We sank only two free thorws at half-time. Dylan Curtis and Andrew Appleyard hit their free throws to extend our lead to 11-7. GPA only managed one free throw so we went into the 3rd quarter with a 3-point lead.

The 3rd quarter I made a slight change on defense and that helped our defense really put more pressure on the GPA point guard. We denied the pass to Luke Wyatt and they really struggled on offense. Connor Brady had several steals in the quarter and after a few easy baskets, suddenly we had a 15-8 lead. Eli Gilbreath knocked down three jump shots in the quarter and this one was blown open at 21-12 by the end of the quarter. The final quarter both teams got a lot of younger players some good time on the floor and we would coast to the 25-17 win.

It was a good first game of the season and honestly we played better than I expected we would. We are coming off a season were we finished 12-2 and made the City Tourney Final Four. We lost about 70% of our scoring from last season so I was wondering who was going to pick up those points. The kids sure did a great job today. I stress to them that it's really important that we play harder than the other team does and it looked as if we did that today.

We were led in scoring by Connor's 9 points and 6 rebounds. Eli Gilbreath had 6 points and 5 boards, while Kolton Kennon had 4 points and 1 rebound. Bryce Caldwell and Cannon England both had two points and 6 rebounds each. Dylan Curtis and Andrew Appleyard both had a single point to round out our scoring. Hayden Rofkahr, Andrew Bone and Andrew Reeder did not score in the game but all three kids played very hard on defense and helped us get the win today. Great job today guys and I'll see you on practice Monday at 6:00.

Eunices Week 1 - Player of the Week - Kolton Kennon
Kolton Kennon

Our player of the week for our first week of the season is Kolton Kennon. He had a really good game on Saturday versus GPA. He scored 4 points and had one rebound. Kolton played great defense and was all over the place out there. Not bad for a 1st grader playing in his first basketball game. Congrats on being named player of the week Kolton, we are very proud of you!

Eunices "mad dog" defense leads the way to 25-9 win!
mad dog

We released our "mad dog" defense on National Family on Saturday and it was too much for them to handle. Our kids once again played very hard and was all over the floor on defense. We shut down National Family's best offensive player and made it very tough on them to get much going on offense. We had a lot of steals that led to easy baskets on the other end of the floor. This one got pretty ugly fast and by half-time this game was over.

The opening quarter we came out and looked very sluggish. We turned the ball over several times early in the quarter and it looked as if it might be a long day. We called timeout, got re-grouped and from that point on, we were very good out there. Our defense led to several steals for easy baskets. Connor Brady scored 8 points in the quarter and Eli Gilbreath sank a short jumper to give us a 10-2 lead after one quarter of play. The 2nd quarter we did not let up. Connor scored a few baskets and Kolton Kennon continues to impress as he sank a couple of short jumpers from the wing. By the half this game was in the bag as we had built a 21-4 lead.

The final two quarters we made sure all the kids got a lot of playing time. Our young players, like Andrew Reeder, Andrew Bone and Andrew Appleyard was once again awesome on defense. Cannon England and Bryce Caldwell stood out defensively, as they helped shut down National Family's offense. It was a good game by our kids and we could not be prouder of how they have played in our first two games this season.

Eunices Week 2 - Player of the Week - Eli Gilbreath
Eli Gilbreath

Our player of the week for week 2 of the season is Eli Gilbreath. He had a good game on Saturday versus National Family. Eli scored 4 points and had one rebound, but he did some great things that don't show up on the stat sheet. He really helped us settle down in the opening quarter and did a great job at point guard. He also played very good defense, as he and Connor Brady shut down National Family's best player. Great job Eli, we are very proud of you!

Eunices survives scappy Swaim team, 19-16!
wow

Well, Arkansas ex-coach Nolan Richardson used to have a saying that a bumpy ride was better than a smooth walk anyday. That's exactly what we had today, a bumpy ride. It sure wasn't pretty most of the time but it was a win. We played very sloppy and was not very good on defense on many trips down the floor. The result would be one of those games that was too close for comfort. In the end our kids kept hustling and found a way to pull out the 3-point win, 19-16. A lot of credit goes to a very good Swaim team and their kids, who really played their hearts out as well in this one.

The opening quarter was a barrage of turnovers and jump balls. Both defenses were all over the floor and it was tough at times to even get a shot off. Eli Gilbreath got us on the board with a jump shot from the wing. After Swaim took a 4-2 lead, Kolton Kennon sank a short jumper to tie the game at 4 right before the end of the quarter. The 2nd quarter would be much of the same. Both teams were very sloppy on offense but that had a lot to do with the defense that was being played. We took a 7-4 on a free throw and layup by Connor Brady. Swaim used a defensive breakdown by our defense and sank a long 3-pointer at the half-time buzzer to tie the game at 7. Swaim sank three free throws at the half, while we knocked down four. Connor, Eli, Kolton and Andrew Appleyard all hit their free throws to give us a 11-10 lead heading into the 3rd quarter.

The 3rd quarter would continue to be ugly basketball as both teams turned the ball over way too much but both teams were playing very hard. Cannon England sank a short jumper to give us a 15-14 lead. Swaim would take the lead back at 16-15 right before the end of the quarter. The 4th quarter we made a slight change on defense and it seemed to help stop Swaim from getting some of those open shots we had been allowing from the wing. Eli would hit a big time shot to put us ahead for good at 17-16. Connor would give us some breathing room with a 2-pointer and we would hold on for the 19-16 win. We sure earned this win! Both teams played hard and Swaim's size really hurt us at times on the boards. We really missed Bryce Caldwell's toughness inside but Andrew Bone did a good job on defense filling in for him. Like I said earlier, it wasn't pretty but it was a win.

We head into the Christmas break at 3-0 and will take a few weeks off before playing again. See you all at practice on Tuesday, Dec. 27th @ 6:00pm.

Eunices Week 3 - Player of the Week - Connor Brady
Connor Brady

Our player of the week for week 3 of the season is Connor Brady. Connor scored 8 points and had 3 rebounds in the game today versus Swaim Office. He also played very good defense and shut down Swaim's main weapon on offense. Connor has been the leader of our team all season long and always gives you everything he's got on the court. Great job again today Connor, we are very proud of you!

Eunices stays "hot" with 30-9 win over Sharum!
HOT

Well at times you could tell we had been off for three weeks. It took us a little while to shake off the rust but when you play as hard as our kids do, good things are eventually going to happen. We were sloppy to begin the first quarter but our defense bailed us out most of the quarter. Connor Brady had several steals that led to a couple of easy baskets for a 4-0 lead. Hayden Rofkahr and Cannon England forced Sharum into numerous turnovers with their pressure defense and we turned those turnovers into another bucket to take a 6-2 lead. Bryce Caldwell sank a short jumper near the end of the quarter to put us ahead 8-2.

The 2nd quarter we continued to play hard and turn turnovers into points. Eli Gilbreath sank a couple of shots to extend our lead to 12-4 by the end of the quarter. We had four players step up and hit big free throws at the half, while Sharum was only able to get two free throws to go down. Bryce Caldwell, Andrew Reeder, Andrew Appleyard and Andrew Bone all was able to hit their free throw to give us a 16-6 lead heading into the 3rd quarter.

We opened the quarter and blitzed Sharum with our defense, scoring 8 points in the first two minutes of the quarter and suddenly this one was a blowout at 24-6. Connor scored a couple of those baskets and Eli also sank a couple of short jumpers and we put it in cruise control. The last quarter and a half we got to play a lot of players and they all did a great job. The game would end with us notching our 4th win of the season 30-9.

We were led in scoring by Connor's 12 points, while Eli had 8. Kolton ended with 4 points and all three Andrew's notched a single point. Bryce Caldwell rounded out our scoring with three points in the game. The win keeps us in 1st place in the league standings with JMAC. Both teams are 3-0 and play each other next Saturday at 9:00am. See you all at practice on Monday at 6:00.

Eunices Week 4 - Player of the Week - Hayden Rofkahr
Hayden Rofkahr

Our player of the week for week 4 of the season is Hayden Rofkahr. He had a good game Saturday versus Sharum. Hayden finished with 3 rebounds and played very good on the defensive end of the floor. Hayden is one of those kids who gives his all the entire time he is in the game. He is a joy to be around and coach. Great job this week Hayden, we are very proud of you!

Eunices can't slow down Arnold as JMAC wins 25-15!
ball on fire

I never thought that one player could beat us but Saturday, that's pretty much what happened. Ethan Arnold scored 21 of JMAC's 25 points as he was red hot from the field and torched us from all over the floor. Don't get me wrong, they had other players that played well, but we pretty much shut them all down but Ethan. He was unreal and we had no answer for him. We knew that JMAC was well coached and they play very tough defense. They made it tough for us to get much going on offense. We were sloppy with the ball a lot of the time and had some silly turnovers.

The 1st quarter was a defensive battle by both teams as neither team could get much going. Our only point of the quarter came on a Connor Brady free throw. Ethan scored a couple of baskets for JMAC to give them a 4-1 lead after the 1st quarter of play. The 2nd quarter we started struggling to stop Ethan as he was driving to the basket with ease at times. We did manage a couple of baskets to pull within 9-5, but JMAC would score the last 3 points of the quarter to take a 12-5 lead heading into the half. Both teams did well from the free throw line at halftime. JMAC knocked down 5 and we hit an incredible 7 free throws to pull within 17-12 as the game moved into the 3rd quarter.

There was not a lot of scoring in the final two quarters of play. We pulled within 19-14 on a basket from Connor but on the next trip down the floor, he and Cannon would bump heads and Cannon was forced to leave the game. with one of our best players already not there in Kolton, and now with Cannon being out, it really took its toll on our defense. We once again started to struggle to stop Ethan from getting to the hole. JMAC would follow Ethan to a 21-14 lead after three quarters of play. The final quarter neither team did much on offense and mid-way through the quarter both teams cleared the bench and let the younger players get in some good minutes. The game ended with JMAC notching the 25-15 win.

It was a battle of the two best rinky dink teams at Goldtrap and on this day the best team won. They have a very good team and played really well in the game. I was very proud of our kids and their effort. We just got beat by a better team in this one. We will return to action next Saturday at 1pm versus Morton Denistry. See you at practice on Monday evening.

Eunices Week 5 - Player of the Week - Cannon England
Cannon england

Our player of the week for week 5 of the season is Cannon England. He played very hard in the game on Saturday versus JMAC and he's got the wounds to prove it. Cannon was injured in the 3rd quarter in the game as he and Connor Brady collied. Cannon was taken to the hospital with a gash on his forehead. Luckily he was ok, as it could have been much worse. Cannon scored 1 point and had 1 rebound in the game before being injured. He always gives 110% and is a joy to be around and coach. Great job Cannon, we are very proud of you!

Eunices drops the hammer on Morton, 35-13!
hammer

Kind of hard to write about a game I wasn't there for, but here goes. I want to thank Coach Chris and Coach Scott for taking over things on Saturday. I had to be out of town and from the way it sounds, I may need to be out of town more often. From everything I have heard the kids played really well in getting a big win over Morton 35-13.

Looking at the stat sheet, it looks as if our defense was all over them and made it difficult for them to score. We built an 8-2 lead in the 1st quarter as Eli Gilbreath knocked down a couple of shots. Connor Brady and Bryce Caldwell also got into the action as they both scored a bucket each. The 2nd quarter looked like the Connor Brady show. He blistered Morton for 10 points in the quarter and also gathered down 6 rebounds. Andrew Bone and Kolton Kennon both sank shots and we had a 22-5 lead heading into half-time. Connor, Kolton, Andrew Appleyard and Andrew Bone all sank free throws and heading into the 3rd quarter this game was well in hand at 26-7.

Looks like the last two quarter a lot of kids got to play some good minutes and we would cruise to a 35-13 win. I heard a lot of good things about the game. Several kids seemed to really stand out. Connor had an incredible game with 16 points and 12 boards. Eli also had a good game as he finished with 6 ponts and 3 rebounds. Andrew Bone had his best game of the season with 5 big points. Kolton ended the game with 3 points, while Bryce and Cannon England each had 2 points a piece. Andrew Appleyard would round out our scoring with a single point from the free throw line. Other players I heard played really well despite not scoring. Hayden Rofkahr and Andrew Reeder were terrors on the defensive end of the floor. I was told that "little" Reeder caused at least 5 jump balls due to his hustle on defense. Great job to all our kids as it sure sounds like they played their hearts out once again. I'm very proud of you guys!

Eunices Week 6 - Player of the Week - Andrew Bone
Andrew Bone

Our player of the week for week 6 of the season is Andrew Bone. He had his best game of the season on Saturday versus Morton as he finished with 5 points and 1 rebound. Andrew has really improved as the season goes along. He is starting to figure things out and has really become a good player for us. Congrats to Andrew for being named our player of the week. We are very proud of you!

Eunices cruises to easy win over Gean Law, 25-15!
Walking ball

Well, we came out on Saturday and played pretty well in our way to an easy 25-15 win over Gean Law. We got lots of kids some good playing time and actually let our younger kids play the entire 4th quarter and we saw some good things out there.

Andrew Reeder gave us an early 2-0 lead in the game as he knocked down two free throws. Connor Brady them made a few steals that lead to easy baskets and suddenly we were up 6-0. The rest of the quarter was good defense by both teams. Gean Law was playing very good, aggressive defense and they gave us some problems. Connor would score another basket in the quarter and we led 8-0 after one quarter.

The 2nd quarter was much of the same as the first. Good defense by both teams but there was some ugly turnovers in there also. Neither team did much on offense. We did manage a basket from Andrew Appleyard and Kolton Kennon in the quarter to take a 12-2 lead heading into the half. Gean Law knocked down four free throws at half, while we sank three. Bryce Caldwell, Kolton and Andrew Bone all sank free throws and we headed into the 3rd quarter up 15-6.

The 3rd quarter we would seal the deal on this game. Kolton and Eli both knocked down short jumpers and Connor would add a couple of buckets of his own and suddenly this was a blowout at 23-7. Cannon England would round out our scoring in the quarter with a jumper from the wing and heading into the final quarter, we held a comfortable 25-7 lead. The final quarter we played Andrew Appleyard at point guard and he did a good job out there. We got all the guys a lot of floor time and the game would end with us notching the 25-15 victory. The win moves us to 6-1 on the season. We return to action next Saturday at 12:00 versus Eastside Animal. They lost to JMAC on Saturday 32-6. See you all at practice on Monday night at 6:00pm.

Eunices Week 7 - Player of the Week - Andrew Reeder
Andrew Reeder

Our player of the week for week 7 of the season is Andrew Reeder. He had a very good game on Saturday versus Gean Law. He scored 2 points and had a couple of rebounds. Andrew really played very good defense. He was hustling all over the floor and made it tough for Gean Law to get off a good shot many trips down the floor. He has really improved throughout the season and I love the way he hustles! Keep it up "little" Reeder, we are very proud of you!

Eunices releases "mad dog" defense on Eastside, 28-7!
mad dog

Poor Eastside must have felt like there were 7 or 8 kids out there for us on defense. Everywhere they turned we had a guy in their face, taking the ball from them or making their life miserable. Our defense, which we like to call "mad dog" was very aggressive today and it paid off on the scoreboard for us. We never gave Eastside one glimmer of hope to win this game.

We came out in the opening quarter and took the fight right to them on defense. Hayden Rofkahr got on the board for us first as he knocked down a free throw for a 1-0 lead. We smoothered their point guard and forced numerous turnovers. Connor Brady converted several of their bad passes into layups for a quick 5-0 lead. Connor would then find Bryce Caldwell on the next trip down the floor for a short jumper to extend our lead to 7-0. Cannon England would also sink a jumper from the wing and we had a 9-0 lead after the 1st quarter of play.

The 2nd quarter we really poured it on. After an early basket by Eastside, Eli Gilbreath and Kolton Kennon teamed up for a cuple of nice fast breaks that would extend our lead to 14-2. Andrew Appleyard got into the act with a short jumper from the wing and the rout was on. Kolton would knock down two more baskets off of nice passes from Eli and we had a 20-2 lead at the half. Kolton and Andrew Appleyard were the only two players we had to make free throws, while Eastside only knocked down one themself. We headed into the 3rd quarter with a comfortable 22-3 lead.

The entire 3rd and 4th quarters we split the kids minutes up evenly so everyone got to play a full quarter each. Everyone we had in the game played hard and we coasted in the last two quarters for a 28-7 win. The win moves us to 8-1 overall and 7-1 in league play. We are sitting good to be the #2 seed from Goldtrap in the up-coming city rinky dink tournament.

We were led in scoring today by Kolton's 9 points and 2 rebounds. Connor added 8 points and 3 boards. Eli and "Little" Appleyard each finished with 3 points, while Cannon and Bryce finished with 2 points a piece. Bryce done a great job on the glass as he grabbed down 6 big rebounds in the game. Hayden would round out our scoring as he scored one point in the game and played very good on defense. Andrew Reeder had several steals in the game and forced several jump balls with his all out hustle on defense. Adrew Bone and Dylan Curtis did not score both both kids played very well on defense and helped us get the big win today. Great job once again guys and see you all at practice on Monday at 6:00.

Eunices Week 8 - Player of the Week - Bryce Caldwell
Bryce Caldwell

Our player of the week for week 8 of the season is Bryce Caldwell. He had a good game today versus Eastside as he scored 2 points and grabbed down 6 rebounds. Bryce once again was great on defense. His hustle out on the court is something that rubs off on other kids and makes them want to play harder. He always gives 110% and is a great kid to be around and coach. Great job Bryce, we are very proud of you!

Eunices defense leads way over Celtics 25-15!
smiley face

Our defense was the star of the show today as we really came to play defensively. With our leading scorer, Connor Brady not at the game, I told the kids before the game that our defense must lead the way in this one. Our kids didn't skip a beat as we made it very tough for the Celtics to score, especially in the first half. This game was over by halftime as we scored the first 16 points of the game and moved to 8-1 on the season.

We would score in the first few seconds of this game as our kids ran our tip play to perfection, as Eli Gilbreath would take a pass from Cannon England to give us a quick 2-0 advantage. In the opening quarter our defense did not allow the Celtics to get near the basket. Our pressure made them turn the ball over on most trips down the floor. Eli would find Cannon on the wing for a couple of short jumpers for a 6-0 lead. Bryce Caldwell would then take a pass from Eli to sink a short jumper in the lane and we had an 8-0 lead after the 1st quarter of play.

The 2nd quarter we kept the defensive pressure on and the Celtics must have felt like we had 8 defenders on the floor at times. On the offensive end, Eli would drive to the hole for several easy baskets to extend our lead to 14-0. Kolton Kennon would knock down a jumper from the wing to give us a 16-0 lead at the half. Both teams would sink 3 free throws at halftime and our lead would be 19-3 heading into the last two quarters of play. Bryce, Kolton and Dylan Curtis all hit free throws for us at the half that extended our lead.

The last two quarters we called off the dogs in a big way and would coast for the easy victory. It was god to see Andrew Reeder knock down a jumper late in the game to help give us the 25-15 win. All our kids played hard and the win secures us as the #2 seed from Goldtrap in the up-coming Rinky Dink City Tournament. See you all at practice on Monday at 6:00!

Eunices Week 9 - Player of the Week - Andrew Appleyard
Andrew Appleyard

Our player of the week for week 9 of the season is Andrew Appleyard. Andrew played really well in the game versus Celtics today. He was really good on defense and helped us get the big win. He did not score in the game but did have a couple of rebounds. Andrew really hustled out there today and I was very proud of how hard he played. Great job Andrew!

Eunices flys by Amos, 35-3!
ball on fire

While I wasn't there for this one, it sure doesn't seem like the kids needed me anyway. Sounds like the boys and Coach Scott handled things just fine without me. I knew it would get pretty ugly, pretty fast. Amos has not won a game all season and has the youngest team in the league, as they have only (1) 2nd grader on the entire team. It's a tough season for them but they'll be better next year.

It looks as if this one was over pretty fast. We blitzed them and jumped to a 16-0 lead by the end of the opening quarter. Connor Brady put on a show with 10 points in the quarter, While Cannon England did the same. Mr. England had 6 points in the quarter, while Hayden, Bryce and Dylan locked down on amos defensively. The 2nd quarter we rout continued as Eli Gilbreath knocked down everything in sight, as he blitzed Amos for 7 points in the quarter. Kolton Kennon would knock down a couple of jumpers and it was a 27-0 Eunices lead at the half.

The 3rd and 4th quarters we spent trying to get some kids the ball that don't get it often on the offensive end. Hayden Rofkahr knocked down a couple of shots to extend our lead to 33-3 by the end of the 3rd quarter. It sure sounded like Hayden, Andrew Appleyard, Dylan Curtis and Andrew Reeder got off some good looks at the basket in the final two quarters. Andrew Reeder would knock down a shot to make the final in this one 35-3. This was one of those games that couldn't get over fast enough for a coach. Thanks to coach Scott for filling in for me in this one.

We return to action on Thursday night @ 7:30pm versus this same Amos team. It is the opening round of the Rinky Dink City Tournament being held at Stephens Boys & Girls Club located at 3101 North 6th street in Fort Smith. Please have your child at the game by 7:00pm. I will be a little late, due to my pee wee team having a game at Jeffrey's at 6:30. Coach Scott will be there to get them started.

Eunices Week 10 - Player of the Week - Dylan Curtis

Our player of the week for the final week of the regular season is Dylan Curtis. Dylan had a good game versus Amos Indians on Saturday. He did not score in the game but had a couple of rebounds and played very good defense. He was out there hustling and giving 110%. This is Dylan's first time to play any organized sports and he is off to a good start. I know he has been practicing a lot with his brother, Kyle at home and it is starting to show. Great job Dylan, we are very proud of you.

Eunices advances to "Sweet 16" of City tourney!
news

I have seen strange things happen in this city tourney over the years I have been coaching. With the way we destroyed Amos last weekend at Goldtrap, I sure was hoping our kids didn't come out too over confident in this one. If they did, it sure didn't show. Our defense came out and attacked Amos, forcing turnovers on most trips down the floor. Connor Brady turned those turnovers in to all sorts of points in the opening quarter. Connor blitzed Amos for 14 points in the quarter as we had this one in hand after the 1st quarter of play.

The 2nd quarter our defense kept the heat on. Eli Gilbreath, Kolton Kennon and Andrew Reeder had several steals in the quarter that led to easy baskets. Andrew Reeder scored off an offensive rebound to give us a 21-2 lead. Kolton and Eli would both knock down shots right before the half and we were up 25-4 at the break. Connor, Dylan, Eli, Kolton and Little Appleyard all sank free throws at the half, while Amos knocked down three. Heading into the 3rd quarter, we held a comfortable 30-7 lead.

Connor was told not to shoot in the 3rd quarter and he did a great job of getting the ball to his other teammates. We did not get many shots to fall, but that was ok, as this one was all but over. Dylan Curtis would knock down a jumper to extend our lead to 32-9 after three quarters of play. The final quarter went by pretty fast as the "mercy" rule was effect. Andrew Appleyard would knock down a jumper from the wing to give us a 34-10 lead. Andrew Bone would round out our scoring, as he knocked down a free throw to make the final 35-13 in this one. The win moves us into the 2nd round of the city tourney and matches us with the #3 seed from Evans, CSM Heat. Be ready for a battle on Saturday guys! Gonna be a tough one. See you all there at 1:30!

Eunices over CSM Heat, 23-9, advances to City "Elite 8"
March madness

Well, to say it wasn't pretty would pretty much describe today's game versus CSM Heat. But while it wasn't pretty it was still a win and we will take it! Especially since the victory advances us to the Rinky Dink City Tourney "Elite 8" round. We will now face the #1 seed from Evans, GPA on Tuesday evening at 5:30. The winner will advance to the tourney "Final 4."

Today our defense was very good. The game really got out of hand and the officials were letting both teams get very physical. It wasn't much like basketball at all, but more like football without pads. It was one of the worst officated games I have coached in many years of coaching at the club. Now, I am not saying that we were being cheated in any way, it was bad for both teams. We were fouling them just as much as they were fouling us. It's just not any form of basketball when the officials let it get that rough.

We opened the game with a very good 1st quarter. Cannon England got us started with a basket from the wing. Connor Brady then had a couple of steals that lead to easy baskets for a 6-2 Eunices lead. Our defense was smoothering CSM and did not let them get many good looks at the basket. After Connor sank a free throw, our lead had grown to 9-2 by the end of the quarter. The 2nd quarter I really thought we might put the game away, but the CSM kids were playing their hearts out as well. Eli Gilbreath did manage a basket off an offensive rebound to extend our lead to 11-2. The rest of the quarter would be a mixture of turnovers and jump balls by both teams. Eli did sink a free throw to give us a 12-2 lead heading into half-time.

Both teams knocked down four free throws at the half to make the score 16-6 as we headed into the 3rd quarter of play. Andrew Bone, Kolton Kennon, Eli Gilbreath and Dylan Curtis all hit free throws for us. The 3rd quarter both teams continued to play hard and the game got even more aggressive. There were a lot of tie ups and jump balls and a lot of turnovers on both ends of the floor. I was proud that our kids did not back down from the physical play but played even harder. Bryce Caldwell would hit a jumper in the lane to extend our lead to 18-6. After a CSM basket, Connor broke free for a lay-up to give us a 20-8 lead. Both teams exchanged free throws and we would lead 21-9 heading into the final quarter of play.

The final quarter seemed like it would never end. Kids were being pushed down on their way to the basket, as the game got real ugly. I had several heated exchanges with the officials that did not one bit of good! CSM did not manage to score a basket the entire quarter and our only points came from a Kolton basket in the lane to make the final 23-9 in this one. Whew, I guess a bumpy ride is better than a smooth walk anyday. Great job guys, way to be tough. Things get even tougher now as we face a very good GPA team from Evans on Tuesday evening at 5:30. GPA is very well coached and have one of the best players in the city in Luke Wyatt. We defeated GPA 25-17 in our very first game of the season at Evans, but they have improved and so have we. Should be a fun game. See you all there at 5:00.

Eunices wins 25-18 over GPA, advances to "Final 4"
Final 4 bounce

I always heard it's not how you start but how you finish. While we started pretty slow tonight, we sure ended things with a bang. We came out tonight with a lot of jitters in the 1st quarter and it showed on the court. Luckily our defense was good enough to keep us in the game while our nerves calmed down a bit. We would only manage one point the entire  first 5 minutes of play on a free throw by Connor Brady. Our defense did a good job of holding GPA to only 3 points and after an ugly opening quarter we were down, 3-1.

The 2nd quarter team really gave us a big time spark and I thought was the difference in the game's outcome. You talk about stepping up, how about Andrew Bone! He scored 3 points in the 2nd quarter and really gave us a big time boost. Kolton Kennon would score on a fast break lay-up and suddenly the game was tied at 7. Eli Gilbreath then sank a short jumper to give us our first lead of the game at 9-7. That's the way the half would end and I knew we were in for a battle in this one.

GPA knocked down 5 free throws at the half, while we hit 4 of our own. Hayden Rofkahr, Bryce Caldwell, Kolton Kennon and Andrew Appleyard all sank their free throws and heading into the 3rd quarter of play, we held a slim 13-12 lead. We quickly would expand our lead with a jumper in the lane by Eli. We would expand our lead as Connor scored on an offensive rebound to give us a 17-12 lead. After a GPA bucket, Kolton knocked down a baseline shot to give us a 19-14 lead. Connor then scored right before the end of the quarter to give us our biggest lead of the game at 21-14.

The final quarter we started milking the clock a bit. Cannon England would hit a circus shot to expand our lead to 23-16. Bryce Caldwell then scored off a nice pass from Eli to extend our lead to 25-16. The rest of the quarter we really took care of the ball and let the clock be our friend. Eli really did a good job taking care of the ball and we would coast in for the 25-18 win.

The win moves us to the City Final Four and matches us up with un-defeated Sykes from Stephens Boys/Girls Club. I stayed around after our game to watch Sykes play and while they are very good, we can play with them. they rebound the ball well and are very aggressive on defense. They really get up and down the floor so we must get back on defense. Should be a fun game. See you all there Thursday at 6:00. Game starts at 6:30!

Eunices loses in final seconds 35-34 versus Sykes!
crying

This one really hurt! Just when it looked as if we had the game secured, Sykes made a couple of plays in the final seconds to snatch away a 35-34 win. It was a game of strange plays, strange calls and neither went in our favor. While the refs were better in this game than in some of the other tourney games, it still was the worst called tourney I have seen in my 15 years of coaching at the Clubs. the free throw that was taken away from Eli was an absolute joke and it ended up costing us the game. after seeing what went on at Stephens all week, it sure makes you appreciate the refs we have at Goldtrap.

We started the game just awful. We had some silly turnovers and bad passes that led to some easy baskets for Sykes on the other end of the floor. Once again our nerves got to us and cost us big time in the opening quarter. We found ourself down 10-2 after the 1st quarter of play. The 2nd quarter we started battling back. Our defense really picked things up and offensively, Kolton Kennon was just getting started. He knocked down three jumpers in the quarter to pull us within 13-8 by the half. Eli Gilbreath did a great job of taking care of the ball and you could tell our kids started to believe they could win this one.

Sykes hit two free throws at the half while we knocked down four. Dylan Curtis, Bryce Caldwell, Connor Brady and Cannon England would pull us within 15-12 by the start of the 3rd quarter. Connor was in big time foul trouble so I changed our defense a bit trying to protect him. It did no good as the whistle seemed to find him all night long. Eli and Kolton continued to lead our comeback. Sykes had no answer for Kolton on the wing so we kept getting him the ball. At the buzzer to end the 3rd, Eli was fouled on a 3-point shot and was given three free throws. He sank the first and then sank the second, but was called for stepping over the line on the second free throw. That has not been called all season and especially not at all in this tourney. I went nuts and protested the call but again, when you play there with their refs, against their #1 team, what can you expect! Eli's free throw did pull us within 23-22 by the end of the quarter.

The start of the 4th quarter would see Connor foul out and I told the guys that other players had to keep stepping up for us to win. Kolton and Eli gladly accepted the challenge and went to work. The game would go back and forth until the final minute. Eli sank a jump shot to give us a 32-31 lead. After a defensive stop, Kolton sank another shot from the wing to put us up 34-31 with 45 seconds to play. Sykes would knock down a jumper to pull within one. Our next trip down we tried to stall some time but Kolton once again found himself wide open but the shot rimmed out. Sykes got the rebounds and started down the floor. We did a good job defensively and forced them into a bad shot but was out of position for the rebound. Sykes got the reound and hit a shot with just 4 seconds left to take a 35-34 lead. We called timeout and set up a play, but Sykes defended it well. Eli did find a wide open Cannon on the wing and he got mugged as he got off a shot at the buzzer but of course no call and the game was over. It sure was a tough one to swallow. I knew how bad the kids wanted this one and it showed after the game. They were all very upset and rightfully so. this was a game that was stole from us and should not have happened this way.

The way this one ended does not take away from a great season we had. I am so very proud of this group. They are champions in my eyes, that's for sure. Great season Eunices players and parents. Look forward to seeing you all at the party on Monday night!
