Tonya Sebring has spent more than 15 seasons teaching high school softball players the skills they need to know to be successful on the diamond.

This fall, however, she started with a slightly different task—teaching her squad what to forget.

After jumping out to a 9-3 start, including going 5-0 in Region 5AAAAA contests, the injury-stricken Lady Eagles collapsed in 2010, losing 11 of their final 13 games and exiting the 5A state tournament in the opening round.

Still recovering from an injury she sustained less than a month before the Region 5AAAAA championship series, Etowah ace Bridgette Flaherty sat in the dugout in frustration.

“I hated it so badly not being able to be out there helping my team,” Flaherty said of missing the title series against Lassiter, which swept the Lady Eagles, 3-2 and 4-2, to claim the Region 5 championship. “I hated more than anything sitting on the sidelines, watching us lose those two games because I felt like I could have made an impact.”

Etowah’s trip to the Shaw Invitational in Columbus in September turned out to be both a blessing and a curse for the Lady Eagles and pitcher Bridgette Flaherty.

The sophomore proved that she had the ability to compete at the varsity level, and her talents were at their peak during the five-game tournament.

“She had some really good outings in Columbus,” Etowah coach Tonya Sebring said, “and that’s when I thought she had turned the corner into becoming a very good pitcher ...

Thirty Cherokee County softball players were selected to their respective all-region teams recently in voting conducted by their regions’ head coaches.

Creekview and Sequoyah led the charge with eight selections each, Etowah followed with five, River Ridge had four, Cherokee three and Woodstock two.

Among the 30 players chosen, 18 received first-team consideration.

“I’m not surprised the county had 30 players get all-region,” River Ridge coach Scott Bradley said...

MARIETTA — Lassiter twice came from behind Thursday in its doubleheader against Etowah and beat the Lady Eagles 4-3 and 4-2 to sweep the best-of-three series and claim the Region 5AAAAA championship.

The top-seeded Lady Trojans (21-8), who won their fifth region title in 11 years and first since 2009, rallied from a 3-2 eighth-inning deficit to post the 4-3 win in Game 1. Lassiter then trailed Etowah 2-1 in the nightcap before scoring twice in the fourth to take a one-run lead before ...

Etowah’s softball program has been a steady playoff contender over the past five years, since Tonya Sebring took the reins after building Towne Lake rival Woodstock into a perennial power.

However, another tradition is starting with the Lady Eagles — a family tradition.

Shannyn Palazzo graduated last spring after being a key part of Etowah’s 2009 Region 5AAAAA championship. She’s now at Georgia State, but Palazzo’s tradition lives on through her younger sister, Chelsi, who ...

Returning for a third-straight season, the Etowah Lady Eagles dismantled Marietta, 11-0 and 8-0, on Friday, sweeping the best-of-three Region 5 tournament series and once again qualifying for the Class AAAAA state tournament.

Backed by an offense that produced 19 runs on 22 hits in the series, Chelsi Palazzo was dominant in the circle. The junior right-hander handled all 12 innings of work for the Lady Eagles (20-6), surrendering seven hits, walking none and striking out 12.

After splitting a double bill on Friday night, the Etowah Lady Eagles won three-straight contests on Saturday to claim first place in the Silver Bracket at the Shaw Invitational in Columbus.

Highlighting the weekend, Bridgette Flaherty hurled a perfect game with nine strikeouts in a 6-0 victory over Hardaway on Saturday.

The junior left-hander picked up all three of the Lady Eagles’ wins on Saturday – one as the starter and two in relief – and finished the tournament 3-1 after allowing just one earned run on two hits in 17 innings of work. Flaherty held opponents hitless over her last 13 innings of work, walking one and striking out 19 batters over that span.

Lady Eagles look to bounce back
Lady Eagles look to bounce back | Cherokee Ledger-News
Source: ledgernews.com

Despite earning a second-straight trip to the Class AAAAA state tournament, it’s a season Etowah Head Coach Tonya Sebring is happy to have behind her.

Following a 9-3 start, injuries and illness helped lead to a mid-season slump that Sebring’s squad could never pull out of, ending the year on a seven-game losing streak, including a first-round state tournament playoff series defeat to eventual championship Collins Hill. Unfortunately, the losses did not stop there, as the

Lady Eagles graduated three All-Region 5AAAAA selections and their No.1 pitcher in May.

However, with the start of the 2011 campaign upon them, the Lady Eagles are ready to get things right back on track, and return a host of players to get that job done.

Among them are a pair of third-year starters in juniors Allie Brown and Torrie Garner.

Brown, a first team all-region and all-county selection in 2010 after batting .313 with 17 runs and 12 RBI, returns to anchor an outfield that includes fellow junior returnees Kaitlyn Hughes, Jenna Ertel and Sharlene Strother.

Garner, meanwhile, moves from catcher, where she was a first team all-county selection each of the past two seasons, to third base, while sophomore Maddie Beth Jenkins is expected to take over duties behind the plate.

Sebring will then use a mixture of players to round-out the infield, utilizing returning lettermen Courtney Atkinson, a junior, and sophomore Bridgette Flaherty at first base, juniors MacKenzie Dilley and Chelsi Palazzo at second, and junior Grayson Lutz at third.

Junior Brittany Rosenberry could also see time at first, while joining Lutz and Flaherty in providing pitching depth behind Palazzo.

Usual suspects expected to contend for postseason runs by Carlton D. White
cwhite@cherokeetribune.com
Cherokee Tribune
08.11.11 - 12:00 am. Etowah, under fourth-year coach Tonya Sebring, is looking to bounce back from a disappointing finish to last season, which saw the Lady Eagles lose seven straight to end the year. Despite those setbacks, Etowah made the state playoffs for the second consecutive year, and the team hopes that its depth will pay big dividends this season.

"We were plagued by injuries at the end of last year, so we have more depth, and we're deeper on the bench this time around," Sebring said.

With no seniors and 10 juniors on her roster, Sebring believes last year's team has matured, and their year of experience will benefit them. Pitcher Chelsi Palazzo - who missed the 2010 season with a back injury - returns as do Torrie Garner, Courtney Atkinson and Allie Brown.

"Eight of our 10 juniors played varsity last year," Sebring said, "so we were young. Those sophomores who are now juniors have been in the Etowah system for a while, so their experience will be beneficial."

  • GREENSBORO, N.C. ---- The Tar Heel trio of Haleigh Dickey, Lori Spingola and Kelli Wheeler garnered All-ACC accolades Friday. Dickey and Spingola were each named to the first-team, Wheeler earned second-team honors. The league honors are the first for all three Tar Heels in their careers.

A native of Woodstock, Ga., Dickey leads the Tar Heels at the plate with 11 home runs and 41 RBI. The sophomore is enjoying career-bests in nearly every offensive category en route to a team-best 12 multi-RBI games. From April 16-17, Dickey belted a pair of home runs and added six RBI in a return to her home state at Georgia Tech.

A four-time ACC Pitcher of the Week, Spingola has been magnificent in her rookie campaign in the circle. The Atlanta, Ga., native's 25 wins lead the ACC and are just three shy of setting a new single season school record. The freshman has shoved 249.1 innings in the circle, compiling a 1.66 ERA with 259 strikeouts to just 50 walks. Spingola tossed a perfect game against Penn State Feb. 27, to earn NFCA National Player of the Week honors.

Wheeler ranks fourth in the ACC and leads UNC with a .367 batting average. The junior has anchored the Tar Heels at the plate with a team-high 17 multi-hit efforts. The Marietta, Ga., product leads UNC with a .460 on-base percentage and .620 slugging percentage. Wheeler has also registered four assists from left field showing off her strong arm.

Columbus in sights as season kicks off

Etowah, under third-year coach Tonya Sebring, is another returning region champion, having captured 5AAAAA - its first region crown in school history - last season. The Lady Eagles lost in the first round of the state playoffs, but they return six starters from that squad, including senior outfielder Shannyn Palazzo, senior pitcher Lilly Kosicki and sophomore catcher Torrie Garner.

The Lady Eagles are a senior-laden team with no lack of experienced players.

"We had more depth on the roster last year, but everybody on the roster this year will, and can, play an important role for this team," Sebring said. "We have lots of experienced players returning, and I'm excited about what we can do this season."

Etowah remains in Region 5AAAAA following reclassification, but instead of competing against the schools from north and west Cobb County, the Lady Eagles will contend with east Cobb's Lassiter, Walton and Wheeler. Woodstock and Cherokee also remain in Region 5AAAAA.

"This region is just as competitive as it was last year," Sebring said. "Different schools, but it's still strong from top to bottom."

Defending region champion Lady Eagles set to build off '09 success

    By: Brandon Michea
    Published: 18 August 2010

Finally back over the state playoff hump, Etowah brought home a Region 5AAAAA championship in 2009 on the way to its first postseason berth in more than half a decade.

Shanynn Palazzo, the 2009 Region 5AAAAA Player of the Year, is back to help lead the Lady Eagles this fall.

And with six returning starters, Lady Eagles’ third-year head coach Tonya Sebring is looking to build off that success this fall.

“I’m excited about the crew I have coming back,” said Sebring, whose team now that we’ve been there, hopefully we can take it a step further. suffered a 3-2 loss in the decisive Game 3 of a best-of-three, first-round state playoff series to Parkview and finished the season 19-9 a year ago. “Although the way we ended last season was disappointing, it was a learning experience; and

“We have a lot of girls that have been in our system for three years already, and while we don’t have a lot of depth right now, this crew is hard working and we should be all right.”

Leading the Lady Eagles are four returning senior starters, including Region 5 Player of the Year Shanynn Palazzo and All-Region Pitcher Lilly Kosicki, both of which were Ledger-News’ First Team All-County selections as juniors.

After batting .390 with 18 runs, 23 RBI and .444 on-base percentage in 2009 while playing all over the field for Etowah, Palazzo is currently holding down duties at second base and serves an important roll as the No. 2 pitcher to Kosicki, who finished 13-4 with 0.83 ERA and 115 strikeouts in 109.2 innings last season.

“Lilly is going to carry a great deal of the load for us,” Sebring said. “Last year was a little bit of self discovery for her, and I think she’s really matured a lot and learned what her strengths are. She worked hard in the offseason, and hopefully she’ll be able to bring us along.”

Seniors Kari Kvitten and Amy Billson also return to the starting line-up, with Kvitten moving to left field and the all-region second-team performer Billson (.302, 10 runs, 15 RBI) keeping her stellar glove at shortstop.

But beyond just their playing experience, Sebring said her seniors are supplying much more.

“They’re all providing great leadership so far,” she said. “They’re not only great players, but they lead by example, and they’re going to be key to our performance this year.”

Joining the senior foursome in returning to the starting lineup is a pair of sophomores in Allie Brown and Torrie Garner.

Brown, an All-Region Second Team selection as a freshman after batting .364 with 14 runs and a .421 average with runners in scoring position, takes over in center field, while Garner is back behind the plate.

Rounding out the Lady Eagles starting line-up are junior Hannah Dickey and sophomore Courtney Atkinson on the corner infield positions, and sophomore Kaitlyn Hughes in right field, while junior Hayley Spears (outfield) and sophomore Jenna Ertel (outfield/first base) will provide depth.

“Our keys are going to be staying healthy, having a consistent defense, and executing our situational hitting,” said Sebring, whose Lady Eagles enter the year ranked No. 5 in Class AAAAA. “Our goal is definitely to build on what we did last year and be playing (in the Elite Eight) in Columbus come October, but we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. We’re in a region that’s competitive from top to bottom, and we know we need to stay focused on region play.”

Etowah opens its season today with a doubleheader at the Mill Creekview Invitational in Gwinnett – facing Grayson and Norcross – and continues tournament play this weekend. The Lady Eagles will then travel to Wheeler for their Region 5 opener, Aug. 24 at 5 p.m.

    ----------------------
MARIETTA - Etowah took advantage of several miscues, scoring as many runs as previously undefeated Wheeler had errors to produce a 7-2 victory Tuesday at Jim Mau Field.

It was the Region 5AAAAA opener for the Lady Eagles, who improved to 3-1 on the season. Torrie Garner batted 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Allie Brown was 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored twice. Hannah Dickey and Jenna Ertel also scored two runs apiece.

Etowah scored runs in every inning Wheeler (5-1, 1-1) committed an error.

The first score, which came in the third, was not a direct result of the error. Brown singled to start the frame and moved to second on Kaitlyn Hughes' sacrifice bunt. A groundout pushed Brown to third before she came around to score on Garner's single to left.

Two more runs scored in the fourth inning. Dickey reached first on a two-out throwing error and advanced to second on a passed ball. Ertel's double plated Dickey and Brown's single to left-center field scored Ertel for a 3-1 lead the Lady Eagles would not relinquish.

"We won, but I felt like we were flat defensively," Etowah coach Tonya Sebring said. "We were able to make some adjustments at the plate, but I felt like we played like we were a young team. We need to play with more confidence all the way around."

Etowah held a 3-2 advantage after the fourth and took command with a four-run sixth. The Lady Eagles received help from four hits and three Wheeler errors to take a resounding 7-2 advantage.

Reliever Chelsi Palazzo opened the inning with a single and Dickey followed with another base hit. Etowah loaded the bases when Ertel reached on an error.

Brown's fielder's choice forced pinch runner Hayley Spears out at home for the first out of the inning. After Hughes' sacrifice fly to right scored Dickey, Wheeler's chance at ending the inning was squandered when Amy Billson's flyout to right was mishandled, scoring Ertel and Brown. Garner's double plated Billson for the fourth run of the frame.

"On offense, situational hitting is our focus," Sebring said. "That's what we like to do. We try to hit the ball and force the defense to make a play on us. That worked out for us (Tuesday)."

Wheeler combined to get five hits off Palazzo and starting pitcher Lilly Kosicki.

The Lady Wildcats scored their first run in the third after Adaria Dixon reached first on a one-out error. She moved to second on groundout and scored on Courtney Sutter's single up the middle, which tied the contest at 1-all.

Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Wheeler sent seven players to the plate and had three bases-loaded situations, but could only come up with one run.

Katie Lynch's no-out RBI single plated Paige Jordan to trim Etowah's advantage to 3-2, but Palazzo, who entered the game with runners on first and second, managed to get the Lady Eagles out of the inning with very little damage.

Kosicki gave up two runs - one earned - on two hits and struck out two in three innings, while Palazzo allowed four hits and struck out three in four innings.

"Etowah is a good ball club," Wheeler coach Jeff Milton said. "Our team made mistakes, and they took advantage."

Etowah will step back out of region play to host former region rival North Cobb today.

Newcomers and old foes alike beware, the Etowah Lady Eagles are not ready to relinquish their spot atop the region.

Opening 5AAAAA play, the No. 7 state-ranked and defending region champion Lady Eagles welcomed both Wheeler and Lassiter into the 5AAAAA fold with defeats, knocking off Wheeler, 7-2, on Aug. 24, and the second-ranked Lady Trojans, 5-3, on Aug. 26.

“I think the girls are confident right now, but they still know that we have a lot of work to do,” Etowah coach Tonya Sebring said. “I felt like we got better each game.

“We had some girls out so we had to shuffle our lineup around a little bit, but people stepped up and made plays for us.”

Among those was Torrie Garner, who highlighted the Lady Eagles’ offensive output in both wins, going 3-for-4 with an RBI against Wheeler and 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI versus Lassiter.

“She’s hitting the ball well for us right now, and she came up with some big RBI,” Sebring said of her sophomore catcher.

Jenna Ertel, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in the Wheeler win, and Hannah Dickey collected a pair of hits in three trips to the plate against Lassiter.

Lilly Kosicki started and picked up the win in both bouts, allowing one earned run on two hits in 3.1 innings of work against Wheeler and surrendering three earned runs on four hits versus Lassiter. She gave way to Chelsi Palazzo in both contests, as the sophomore right-hander combined to allow five hits and three walks and struck out four in 6.2 innings of scoreless relief to log a pair of saves.

Sandwiched between the region wins, the Lady Eagles (5-1) knocked off former region foe North Cobb, 3-2, on Aug. 25.

Kosicki went the distance in the circle and allowed no earned runs on two hits and five strikeouts, while Allie Brown and Kari Kviten had a pair of hits each to lead the offense.

In another busy week, Etowah was to battle region- and county-foe Woodstock on Aug. 31, before taking on Harrison today at 5 p.m. and Marietta on Thursday at 5 p.m. – all at home.

Etowah freshman Bridgette Flaherty (11) slides safely into second base, ahead of a tag attempt by Woodstock sophomore shortstop Alex Wisted. In her third start since being called up from the junior varsity squad, Flaherty went 3-for-3, including a game-tying RBI double in the bottom of the eighth. She then went on to score the winning run on a bases-loaded single by senior Amy Billson, as the Lady Eagles rallied past their crossroad rival, 2-1, Aug. 31 at Etowah.

With pinch runner Jenna Ertel on second base with no outs and Etowah trailing county and Region 5AAAAA rival Woodstock by a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, Lady Eagles head coach Tonya Sebring called for the sacrifice bunt to move Ertel to third.

Some things, however, do not always work out as planned, as two pitches later, Flaherty found herself in an 0-2 hole and being told to swing away. Fortunately on this night for the Lady Eagles, that proved to be the better option.

Taking the two-strike offering from Lady Wolverines’ hurler Maddie Dotson, the freshman right fielder, who was recently called up from the junior varsity squad, ripped a double that one-hopped the fence in dead center field and plated Ertel to tie the contest at 1-all. Then, two batters later, Flaherty came in to score on a bases loaded single by senior Amy Billson, giving the Lady Eagles a 2-1, walk-off victory, Aug. 31 in Woodstock.

“We brought her up about a week and a half ago because we had an open spot on varsity for whoever was going hard, and she earned it,” Sebring said of Flaherty. “She’s been going hard and has had a pretty good swing in practice, but, to be honest, I put her in the line-up for her defense because she’s been getting good reads on the ball in the outfield.

“But she was seeing the ball really well at the plate today.”

“As a freshman, when I’m in the outfield I’m just trying to keep my head in the game, not make any errors and back up every play I can, and at the plate I just try to hit smart pitches,” Flaherty said. “That last pitch looked like a screwball that missed and it came a little inside, and I was able to rip it.”

Highlighted by her heroic hit, Flaherty finished the night 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Billson collected the only other base-knock for sixth-ranked Etowah (7-3) with her game-winning RBI single through the left side of the infield, and sophomore right-hander Chelsi Palazzo notched her first varsity win after tossing 2.2 innings of no-hit, scoreless relief.

Dotson took the tough-luck loss, surrendering one earned run on four hits, one walk and seven strikeouts in seven-plus innings of work and watching the Woodstock offense strand 11 base runners.

“We definitely feel fortunate because we didn’t have our best today,” Sebring said. “Woodstock came out ready to play, and I thought Dotson threw well, located her pitches nicely and kept us off-balance. Our hitters did not make the adjustments they needed to until late in the game, and then we got the timely hits and just came out on top of it.

“But this game could have gone either way.”

Both Dotson and Lady Eagles’ starter Lilly Kosicki (5.1 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs, 4 walks) were untouchable through the first two innings, before Woodstock threatened in the top of the third.

After reaching on a one-out error, Katie Gable advanced to second on a sac bunt by Elizabeth Hamilton and to third on a two-out single to left by Lauren Pehrson, who took second on a throw home. On the next batter, however, Kosicki coaxed a ground ball back to the rubber and threw on to first for the final out.

The Lady Wolverines (4-9, 0-3 region) went on to load the bases with two outs in the fourth and put two runners on with one out in the sixth, and came away with nothing; but that was not the case when the game went into an extra frame.

With Taylor Allen starting on second base as the international tiebreaker runner, Dotson laid down a one-out sac bunt that was fielded by Lady Eagles’ catcher Torrie Garner. Garner’s throw to first, however, sailed a little high and went down the right-field line, allowing Allen to score and Dotson to take second. Palazzo then walked the next batter, but recorded the final two outs to limit the damage to just the one run.

Flaherty quickly got things going for the Lady Eagles (7-2, 4-0) in the bottom of the eighth with her RBI double, and Allie Brown reached on a sac bunt attempt when Woodstock tried to throw Flaherty out at third. Brown then moved to second before the play was over and fellow sophomore Kaitlyn Hughes drew a walk to set the table for Billson’s game-winner.

Despite the loss, Woodstock coach Kortney Dempsey said her Lady Wolverines had no reason to hang their heads.

“I am very pleased with the girls,” she said. “They came out here and did everything I asked them to do. We obviously didn’t score the runners we needed to, but this was a growing experience and these kids are getting better everyday.”

As for the performance of her senior ace, Dempsey was proud.

“Maddie and I had a little heart-to-heart over the last couple of games and I told her ‘it’s now or never and time for her to step up,’ and mentally she did that tonight. Her pitches have always been there, and if we can just keep her on the mental road, she’ll be more successful as the year goes on.”

Etowah went on to drop a non-region affair to Harrison on Sept. 1, before improving to 4-0 in 5AAAAA with a 3-0 victory over Marietta on Sept. 2.

Kosicki went the distance in the win, allowing no runs on three hits, no walks and seven strikeouts, while sophomore Sharlene Strother went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Brown drove in a run.

This week, Etowah hosts county-rival Sequoyah tonight at 7:15, and returns to region play on Thursday with a visit from Walton (6:30 p.m.). The Lady Eagles will then hit the road for Cherokee on Sept. 14 (5:55 p.m.)

Woodstock, which suffered a loss to Kennesaw Mountain on Sept. 1 while playing its 11th game in nine days, travels to Lassiter on Thursday (5:55 p.m.) for a region battle, before participating in the Cherokee County Invitational Friday and Saturday at J.J. Biello Park in Woodstock.

KENNESAW - Kennesaw Mountain scored four runs in the fourth inning to break a 2-all tie and went on to beat Etowah 8-3 on Tuesday in the second game of a split doubleheader that began with the Lady Mustangs' win over Cherokee.

Kennesaw Mountain jumped out on top with two runs in the first inning before the Lady Eagles tied the contest with two runs in the third. The Lady Mustangs brought nine batters to the plate in the fourth, and totaled three hits, a walk and an error to plate its three runs.

The fifth-ranked Lady Mustangs (18-5) also scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach.

"We made some mental and some physical errors (Tuesday) that cost us," said Etowah coach Tonya Sebring, whose team committed three errors in the game. "Kennesaw Mountain was just better than us (Tuesday)."

Torrie Garner led the Lady Eagles (11-8), who have dropped five of their last seven, by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Etowah collected 11 hits, including doubles from Allie Brown and Kaitlyn Hughes, but it couldn't keep up with the Lady Mustangs attack.

Brown and Hughes each batted 1-for-4, while Shanynn Palazzo was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Amy Billson batted 2-for-4 with run scored and an RBI, while Kari Kviten, Jenna Ertel and Lilly Kosicki each had a hit. Hughes also scored a run.

Kennesaw Mountain's Malea Bell singled to start the game and moved to third on consecutive groundouts. Amanda Hallman forced a two-out walk and stole second, leading to Molly Uhrman's two-run single that scored Bell and Hallman for the 2-0 Lady Mustangs lead.

Hughes led off the third inning with a double and reached third base on Palazzo's single. Billson's sacrifice fly to right plated Hughes and Garner's single scored Palazzo for the 2-all tie.

The Lady Mustangs finally got to starting pitcher Bridgette Flaherty in the fourth. Chandler Stooksbury walked to begin the inning and Kimmie Strebe reached base on a nicely placed bunt. Bell doubled to plate Stooksbury and Strebe for the 4-2 advantage.

Allison Box reached on an error and moved to third when Kaylee Williams grounded into a fielder's choice to first. Amanda Hallman lifted a triple into left field on a 3-2 count for two more RBIs and a 6-2 lead.

Amber Hallman doubled to lead off Kennesaw Moutain's fifth and scored on an error. Another error in the sixth allowed Kaylee Williams, who singled and stole second, to come around to score, giving Etowah an 8-2 advantage.

Billson hit a one-out single in the seventh and moved to second on a wild pitch. Garner doubled on a 3-2 count to bring Billson home and back-to-back groundouts ended the game.

"Our goal is to get better every game so this was good for us," Sebring said. "Kennesaw Mountain is a quality team, but I wish we would have given them a better game because I know we're capable of that."

Flaherty, a freshman, allowed six runs - four earned - on nine hits and walked three in four innings. Kosicki came on in relief to start the fifth and gave up two unearned runs on three hits with one walk in two innings.

"We put (Flaherty) out there to compete," Sebring said. "It's nice to get her some innings and some experience because we'll need her later."

Etowah will travel to No. 10 Hillgrove on Tuesday.

Lady Warriors bring 'A' game to defeat Etowah
Lady Warriors bring 'A' game to defeat Etowah
    Published: 22 September 2010

Looking to secure their place in the top-half of the Region 5AAAAA standings, the Cherokee Lady Warriors delivered one of their best all-around performances of the season en route to a 4-1 victory over rival Etowah, Sept. 14 in Canton.

“Everything was clicking,” Lady Warriors’ coach Tonya Carlisle said. “The kids came out from the beginning, took control of the game and never let [Etowah] feel like they were in it.

“I’ve told these kids since day one that if they bring their A game each time out, they can compete with anybody, and they did that tonight.”

Led by a pair of hits each from Bree Wells (2-for-3, two runs, walk, double) and Maddie Hester (2-for-3, double), all nine Cherokee starters reached base, as the Lady Warriors collected eight hits, drew five walks and stole five bases. Senior hurler Torie Reeves, meanwhile, went the distance, allowing no earned runs on three hits, one walk and six strikeouts.

After Reeves fanned two in a perfect top half of the first inning, the Lady Warriors wasted little time providing their ace with some offensive support.

Senior Natalie Rhodes led off with a single and stole second, before Wells drew a one-out walk and Brianne Welch reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Naomi Catt then plated Rhodes with a groundout and Reeves helped her own cause with an RBI single, scoring Wells for a 2-0 Cherokee advantage.

The Lady Warriors (13-8, 4-2 region) tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth, as junior Lauren Mullinax walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Courtney Nations, and took third on a single by Hester. Mullinax then scored on a delayed steal, as Hester was thrown out at second.

Hitless through the first four innings, the Lady Eagles (11-7, 5-1) put together a two-out rally to get on the board in the top of the fifth.

Reaching on a one-out fielding error by Cherokee, Kari Kviten moved up to second on a wild pitch, before coming in to score on Hannah Dickey’s RBI single.

Looking to keep the rally going, freshman Maddie Beth Jenkins drove a high pitch through the left side of the field to give Etowah runners on first and second, but for the second time in the game, Lady Warriors’ sophomore center fielder Anna Rowe laid out to make a diving grab for the final out of the frame – robbing Allie Brown of extra bases.

“She made two unbelievable catches,” Carlisle said of Rowe, who also robbed Jenkins of a hit in the third. “Those were big league, and couldn’t be more proud of her.

“It would have been a different ball game if those balls get into the gap.”

Cherokee added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, as Wells stroked a one out double and later scored on a wild pitch.

Reeves took care of the rest, retiring six of the final seven batters she faced.

“She is progressively getting better,” Carlisle said of Reeves. “Early in the season, by the third time through the batting order, hitters were getting to her. That started to happen a little tonight, but she refocused and was able to shut them down.”

Adding to Cherokee’s offensive success, Rhodes finished 1-for-3 with a run, a walk and a stolen base, and Welch went 1-for-2 with two steals.

Kaitlyn Hughes had Etowah’s only other hit.

The Lady Warriors went on to defeat Woodland, 7-0, on Sept. 15 and closed out their regular season region schedule with an 8-0 whipping of Wheeler on Sept. 16.

The wins extended Cherokee’s recent run of success to nine victories in its last 11 contests.

Etowah, meanwhile, took advantage of several Roswell  errors en route to a 9-0 victory over the Lady Hornets on Sept. 15.

Chelsi Palazzo picked up the win for the Lady Eagles.
