Each Year the competition to win basketball scholarships at every level becomes more intense. Every legitimate means of gaining
an edge toward securing an education and the opportunity to play at the college level is an investment in your future.
Only a handful of players win D-I scholarships each year. It is a difficult to jump from high school to college in any sport. Basketball is the most limited in terms of scholarships available.
Colleges now recruit not only nationally, but internationally, so the pool of athletes searching for scholarships continues to grow. Using NCAA figures from their own 'participation rate', study and 'probability of competing beyond high school', the NCAA estimates that 2.9% of HS seniors will compete at some level in college.
If our student/athletes get the message sooner rather than later about the numbers, they can positively affect what they have some control over. The keys are academics, skills training and nutrition. Winning a college scholarship is not just about ability. The quality of effort expended can and will improve your odds of success.

Game Of The Night - Class Of 2010
After taking a year off from the DMV vs Philly All Star Game , Keith Stevens ( Nike Team Takeover ) put together a memorable showcase of talent this weekend at the Capital Sports Complex in District Heights , MD. The best from the DC , MD and VA , included 11 already signed Division I basketball in action for beltway bragging rights. The talent in the DC metro and Baltimore areas combined is arguably the best in the nation and Philadelphia got a taste of that juice last night. While the Philadelphia underclassman got wins from both the freshman and sophomores , the DMV took home both upperclassman games splitting the series 2-2 in the 2nd annual DMV vs Philly All Star Games.
The most entertaining game of the day goes to the junior class of 2010 , hats off to both the DC and Philly squad for putting on a classic. In the end it would be the DC team who would get the last laugh winning 89-81. Markel Starks , who has committed to Georgetown University ran the show displaying tremendous open court playmaking skills and earning the game MVP. Starks if the kind of guard you love to play with , he is lighting quick and just seems to make getting his teammates the ball almost effortless finishing with 12pts and 6assts.
The DC junior team came out fired up as if there were a championship title on the line. The majority of the energy came from 6'7" forward Roscoe Smith of Walbrook HS in Baltimore , MD. Smith was downright impressive both offensively and defensively scoring a game high 19pts and collecting 6 blocks. The amount of passion and heart that Roscoe played with provided some much needed fuel in such an intense rivalry of cities only 150 miles apart. Roscoe Smith was the X-factor for the DMV team.
Smith and Starks weren't the only reasons for the success Saturday night , Bryon Allen of Oak Hill Academy in VA chipped in with 17pts and Will Barton of Lake Clifton HS added 12pts in the win. The talent in the DC metro and Baltimore area combined is arguably the best in the nation
Dion Waiters , a 6'3" guard from Life Center HS and University Of Syracuse commit kept his Philly team in the game throughout with some very tough moves. Waiters is an athletic freak , scoring right before the half on a big time slam over Josh Selby of Dematha HS. Waiters finished with a team high 17pts in the loss.

The Rest Of The Action
Seniors - The senior game featured some highly skilled prospects in Malik Wayans (Villanova) and Dante Taylor (Pittsburgh) to name a few. Raphael Putney of Woodbrige HS stole the show for the DMV team pouring in 18pts in the 79-73 win against the boys from Philadelphia. The 6'8" forward from VA , took home game MVP honors and will be heading to UMass after the season.
Dante Taylor of National Christian Academy in Fort Washington , MD chipped in with 10pts and showed why he is amongst the elite in his class. Nick Groce of St. Mary's HS also added 10pts and played very well on both ends of the court.
For Philadelphia , Malik Wayans of Roman Catholic HS played well scoring 14pts and dishing 4assts in the loss.
Sophomores - Philly handed the DMV squad their second loss of the night in the Class Of 2011 game winning 57-49. A big reason for Philly's success came from 6'1" guard John Johnson of Girard College HS who torched the local all star team with 17pts en route to the game MVP. Johnson knocked down two from long-range and scored the game's final six points.
Kevin Smith of Freedom Academy led DC with 15pts and wowed the crowd with a couple of very nifty moves in the process. Mikael Hopkins of Dematha Catholic HS chipped in with 7pts in the loss.

Freshman - Philly's underclassman players went undefeated starting with the Freshman class who won 39-34. 5'7" point guard Maurice Watson of Boys Latin HS ran the show scoring 7pts but dishing out assists to six different players. Watson was ferocious on defense as well coming up with three steals in the win to take home the MVP award. Freshman Joe Lundy of Friendship Collegiate in Washington DC poured in 10pts for the DMV team.

Philly Phenom Campers Dominate 2008 National Adidas Phenom 150 Camp

|
This year at the 2008 Adidas Phenom Top 150 Camp, Philadelphia was well represented in the top 10 and All-American Game as the 10th Grade All-Star Game was arguably the best all-star game played in the history of the camp. Both teams were very extremely well balanced, the game went right down to the wire, and each team had a great point guard - 6'1 Frosh Joey Gripper from Elkins Park, PA and 6'0 Frosh Chandler Fraser-Pauls from Hopewell, NJ - who did an outstanding job of making everybody in the game better. And Gripper is another example of the irony of the way things sometimes turn out, as, in three of his four previous appearances at the adidas Junior Phenom Camp and the Phenom Top 150 Camp in SanDiego, CA, he just missed being named to play in the all-star game. However, this time around Gripper was one of the best players in camp, as is evident the fact that he finished ranked #5 overall and ranked #1 at the point guard spot in this age group. We also were very impressed with the way 6'4 Frosh Robert Selmon from Phoenix, AZ, who is like a young left-handed Carmelo Anthony, scored both inside and outside en route to 21 points and game MVP honors. And how about 6'4 Frosh Frankie Smalls from Philadelphia, PA, who did most of the dirty work inside and, as a result, more than offset the fact that 6'10 Frosh Chris Coleman from Buffalo, NY did not take advantage of his size and strength to be a force down on the block? Instead, Coleman spent most of his time in the high post and out on the perimeter, which played right into the hands of 6'8 Frosh Khem Birch from Ottawa (St. Thomas Aquinas) ON. Speaking of Birch, he was physically overmatched and only had four points in the 10th Grade All-Star Game. However, thanks to his great hands, incredible wing span, willingness to run the court, ability to score and rebound around the basket, and incredible shot blocking ability, Birch was the other player (along with Branch) that everybody was talking about in camp. So it should come as no surprise that Birch takes home our #1-ranking in this age group.

Patrick Stanwoods(Hoopscoop) Recap of 2007 Middle Atlantic Jr Phenom Camp
This Past Weekend at the 2007 Middle Atlantic Jr Phenom Camp gave us some very entertaining moment's. 130 of the best middle school basketball players had the chance to compete against each other at West Chester University.
There was some very entertaining and extremely competitive basketball games. Classic Battles between some of the best players in the country, a very compelling championship game, brave story from players battling injury, an unsung heroe in the All-Star game, thrilling Matchup's between some of the nations top PG's...
This is just a tip of the iceberg as over the next couple of days the reports will start to filter onto the Web...
Enjoy Campers, You deserve it....
Paul Gripper’s Middle Atlantic Camp gave us a nice early look at some of the top young players in the Philadelphia/ Middle Atlantic region…The stars of tomorrow were on display this past weekend at West Chester University in West Chester, PA and below is a rundown of some of the standout hoopers!
by Patrick Stanwood
(special to the Fullcourt Press)
Part One:
Class of 2011
Michael Gilchrist 6’5 Sf 2011 Somerdale, NJ
The state of New Jersey is never void of talent. If Gilchrist continues to develop, he’ll likely be the state’s next elite player. He’s an athletic wing-forward that moves baseline to baseline with ease, has a nice ability to get to the rim and sees the floor quite well for a young perimeter guy. With the right coaching, this Garden State product may even be a kid who plays the PG position from time to time.
Juan’ya Green 6’2 Sg 2011 Philadelphia, PA
He’s an intelligent kid with a strong court demeanor and while he’s not yet fully made the move to the “1” spot, he looked comfortable there at times. Green is a guy who can get you multiple baskets in a short period of time. On the defensive end, this combo guard has active hands and the lateral quickness that allows him to make things tough opponentx. Very good student (3.4 GPA).
Marcus Jones 6’0 Sg 2011 Pennsauken, NJ
Our first look at this elite defender was a great one. He’s close to automatic when shooting mid-range jumpshots and has above average quickness.
Devin Coleman 6’2 Sf 2011 Philadelphia, PA
One of the top shooters in the Northeast, Coleman was incredible from behind the arch, he’ll score in bunches, he’ll score within the flow of the offense and to his credit he actually remains effective without the ball in his hands.
Aaron Brown 6’5 Pf 2011 Philadelphia, PA
This lefty has elite jumping ability, which allows him to sky for rebounds and change his opponents’ shots. Brown is one to keep an eye on in the future!
Montrell Smith 6’5 C 2011 Philadelphia, PA
The son of former St. Joseph’s (PA) University legend Henry Smith is certainly a work in progress. That said he showed us a glimpse of the player he has the potential to be. This PA prospect has a strong body, which he used during the camp to get great position in the paint. A great attitude and strong pedigree make Smith a kid who could be a big time player in the future.

The camp was held at West Chester University's South Campus, which locatedjust outside Philadelphia, PA. Although the camp topped of at the 9th grade Level, the most competitive division was the 9th grade division(2011) with attracted 60 plus players, followed by the combined 6th/7th Grade division with 32 players and the 9th grade division with 29 players.
The format of the camp was consistent with most camps it's size, and consisted of four league games, championship games and all-star game in each division. In addidtion to the games, the camp featured an instructional component put on by the newly createdNational Prep Basketball Skills Combine, which provided the campers with evaluations and fundamental skills instruction.
In terms of media outlets covering the 2-day event, in addition to the Buckeye Prep Report Rob Taylor, Hoop Scoop's Pat Stanwood, and Basketball Spotlight's Mike Melton were on hand to document the action.
As most people know, the Mid-Atlantic region of the country is loaded with young talent. In fac, several of the players in attendance wee nationall ranked. Although my primary focus was on the younger divisions, a couple of 9th graders caught my eye. The top player in that division was easily Tyree Johson, a 5'9 PG from Cummunication Tech High School... Johson is a very very talentedwho is always in attack mode when has the basketball in his hands. He does a great job of creating separation off the dribble and getting into the gaps of the defense. Johson has good curt vision, which he uses to find open teammates. That's not all; Johsnon can also score the ball and he has a nice midrange game..
I was also very impressed with Paul Gripper's 14u Standout Kirk(Naaz) Wynn, a 5'11 PG from Philadelphia PA, Wynn is a young 9th grader who plays primarily with Paul's 2011 RBK Super Team.. Although he more than competes against the older players in his class, he is astandout performer when he plays against kids his own age...
*****Top 15 Performers 8th Grade Class of 2011*****
1. Marcus Jones, a 6'1 WG from Pennsauken, NJ was one of the most impressive players at the camp. Jones was very aggressive offensively andhe consistently put up bigh numbers. Jones was very aggressive to the bucket and finished more times than not. In addition, Jones proved that he could also shoot from beyond the arc or from the midrange. In the all-star game, Jones finished with 8 points and 1 rebound. If he continues to develop, Jones should be anice looking college prospect down the road. In the summer Marcus Jones plays for the Philadelphia RBK All-Stars.
2. Aaron Brown, a 6'5 C from Darby PA, had a fantastic camp. Brown was a beast around the boards. Brown has a solid frame and he is strong and athletic. Despite his size, Brown handles the ball well in the open court and he does a good job of scoring around the bucket. Brown continued his strong play into the All-Star game where his 12 points led to his selection as Co-MVP. Gripper, as he always does, had been telling me about this kid for some time, and once again, he was right on the money. This kid can really really play! Watch out America Gripper has Beast with Brown.. Wow!! In the Summer I hate to say that Aaron Brown plays for Gripper's Philadelphia RBK All-Stars.
3. Michael Gilchrist, a 6'6 PF from Somerdale NJ, continues to show signs of greatness Gilchrist is extremely physically gifted and he already has all tools necessary to compete against his 2011 peers and they are not really his peer's Gilchrist could legitmately play with 2013, Imagine that... Gilchrist was even more impressive when he played up against the 9th graders at the camp. In the all-star game, Ghilchrist finished with 4 points, 2 blocks and 1 rebound. The fact that Gichrist just turned 13 years old only highlights the enormous upside this kid has. In the Summer Mike Gilchrist Play's for (Gasp) Gripper's Philadelphia RBK All-Stars.
4. Juan'ya Green, 6'2 WG from Philadelphia PA, showed signs of why many people consider him to be one of thee top prospects in this class. Geen is a big guard who has nice athleticism, which he uses to get to the with ease. Although he prefers dribble penetration right now in his career, he can consistently knock down the midrange or the long ball. In the all-star game Green finished with 10 points, 1 steal 1 rebound and 1 block for the winning team. In the summer Green plays for Gripper's Philadelphia RBk All-Stars.
5. Devin Coleman, a 6'2 WG from Philadelphia PA, logged in another nice camp. Although he was not the dominant force I saw at last year's camp, his performance was still impressive this time around. Coleman is very athletic and is more of aslasher at this point of his career. However, he did show the ability to score from the perimeter. In addition, according to his camp coach, Coleman was very coachable, followed instruction, and play team basketball. In the all-star game, Coleman finished with 6 points, 2 blocks, 2 assists and 1 steal. In the summer Devin Coleman plays for Gripper's Philadelphia RBK All-Stars
6. Lamont Mc'Laurin, a 6'5 C from Philadelphia PA, was one of the top big men at the camp. Mc'Laurin played hard and physical and was very aggressive. Although I thought his play was a little lack luster last year, he was the complete opposite this time. I was very impressed with Mc'Laurin's effort and attitude and I look for big things from him this year. In the all-star game, McLaurin finished with 9 points and 2 rebounds. In the summer Lamont Mc'Laurin plays for Gripper's Philadelphia RBK All-Stars.
7. Sha'Karee Scaife, a 6'1 WG from Little Rock, AK, had a standout performance in the all-star game. Scaife arrived at the camp a virtual unknown, but with his impressive performance in the all-star game, he made a case for inclusion to the national list of elite players in this class. Scaife was very active in the all-star game where he finished with 12 points and 7 rebounds on his way to Co-MVP honors for the winning team. Sha'Karee Scaife plays for the Arkansas Kings.
8. Takwail Bailey, a 5'8 PG from Camden, NJ had another strong performance, and was easily one of the top floor leaders at the camp. Bailey plays smart and he does a good job of finding open teammates and distributing the ball. There is not a lot of flash to his game but Bailey gets the job done. In the all-star game. Bailey contributed 5 points. In the summer Takwail Bailey play's for Watson's Philadelphia RBK All-Stars.
9. Jaylen Bond, a 6'4 PF from Philadelphia PA, was another standout bigman performer from Philly. Bond is another one of Gripper's athletic Big man that has been added to the RBK All-Star's stable. Jalen too is only 13 year's old, he is very bouncy and active around the bucket and he runs the floor well for his size. In the all-star game Bond added 1 assist and 1 rebound. In the summer Jalen Bond play's for Gripper's Philadelphia RBK All-Stars.
10. Joshua Heyliger, a 6'1 WF from Bear, DE, was most impressive in the all-star game. Heyliger started strong and was his team's primary scorer early in the contest. Heyliger, like he did last year at the camp, showed signs of something special. Heyliger is extremely athletic and he has a nice midrange jump shot. Heyliger's game high 16 points made him a strong contender for MVP honors. In the summer Joshua Heyliger plays for the Philadelphia RBK All-Stars.
11. Ameen Tanksley, a 6'3 WF from Philadelphia PA, has as much potential upside as any player at the camp. I first saw Tanksley at my Buckeye Prep Report Camp back in July, where he had a breakout performance in the all-star game on his way to MVP. Tanksley has a long slender build, which suggest that he will continue to strech out. In the all-all-star game Tanksley finished with 4 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist.
12. Joey Gripper, a 5'10 PG from Philadelphia PA, has obviously been growing immensely and as we can see has been working on his strength. Little Gripp's frame is starting to fill out and his presence on the court is now more profound. Gripper does a great job of pushing the rock and, like any good point guard; he prefers and looks to distribute the rock versus trying to get his own shot off. In the all-star game Gripper dropped 3 assist and added 2 points for the winning team. In the summer Joey Gripper plays for Big Gripper's Philadelphia RBK All-Stars.
This camp report would not be complete if I did not talk about the Little General's, Tiny Guards.
13. Tariq Cepphas, a 4'11 PG from Chester PA and
14. Maurice Watson a 5'0 PG from Philaelphia PA, both players respectively, provided the energy and intensity the camp needed. Both of these point guards play with a high level of energy and grit. Make no mistake, despite their tiny stature; these two floor leaders can play the game. Both Cephas and Watson handle the ball very well, are consummate floor generals, and they do an outstanding job of finding open teammates. These kids were exciting to wathc and both players put on a show in the all-star game.. Maurice Watson plays for Watson's Philadelphia RBk All-Stars.
15. Chase Morgan, a 5'5 WG from Lanberger PA, thanks to multiple assist from Tariq Cephas, got hot in the all-star game and knocked down four 3-pointers in that game. If you leave this kid open in the corner, put 3 points in the books... Chase Morgan plays for Watson's Philadelphia RBK All-Stars.
Top Ten Perfomrers (2012/2013)
1. Da'Quan Walker, a 5'6 WG from Philadelphia Pa, was clearly the top player at the camp in his division. Walker is very skilled for his age and he plays with poise and confidence. I had a chance to watch Walker play last year and it is clear that his game has continued to develop. Remeber this kid's name, He is going to be special.. Daquan Walker plays for the Philadelphia RBK All-Stars
2. Lucky Phothisoune, a 5'8 WG/PG from Newark DE, Lucky was a scoring machine and he put up impressive numbers throughout the camp. Phothisoune has a solid handle and a lot of floair to his game. He love to weave his way to the bucket, and with his creative handle, he makes it look easy. Although I was disappointed did not wait around to participate in the all-star game, he showed enough talent during the camp to warrant a no.2 ranking.
3. Tyler Reed, a 5'2 WG from Philadelphia Pa, had an outstanding camp. Reed, only a 6th grader, has an impressive pacage of skill, including the ability to handle the rock, good court vision and a high basketball IQ. I was real impressed with Reed's ability to beat his man off the dribble as well as his aggressiveness to the bucket..
4. Jontil Swift and
5. Aquil Craft-Brown, rounded out the top 5. both of whom stood out among their peers. Both players played hard and aggressive and appeared to be more advance than most other players at the camp.
6. Elijah Cooper
7. Trevon Duvall, Although most evaluators concentrate solely on the older players, I love to watch the young guys hoop. Over the weekend there were a couple of very young players who played up a few years.. Duvall is a point guard who has advance ball handling skills and poise for his age. This kid was fearless despite the fact that he was competing against kid's 3-4 years older. I am going to keep my eye on both these young men.....
8. Tyler Scaife, a 6th grader from Little Rock Ak, I have to mention this player... Although BPR does not usually cover female players, the one female at the camp caught my eye. She went head-to-head with the boys, and played her way into the all-star game. Scaife played as well as any boy at the camp, and I have to assume that there are very few girls at her age with her level of talent.......
In closing, I would like commend Paul Gripper and hi team of dedicated parents for hostin a quality event. In terms of how I judge an event, I try and watch the players and how they interact with their fellow player s and coaches. from what I could tell, the players enjoyed their experience at the camp. In addition, if you want to get a closer look at the Philadelphia RBK All-Stars and the top Philly kids, they will be participating in the Buckeye Prep Report Invitational Tounrament, which is currently scheduled for March 30-April 1, 2007 in Columbus, Ohio....
