Erindale Lions Little League

Little League Philosophy
Little League is an organization dedicated to bringing the fun of baseball to children around the world. With members from many different countries, Little League baseball can teach our children to become young men and women. Little League believes in three basic principles:1. Character 2. Courage 3. Loyalty The Little League Pledge also helps us understand what Little League baseball is striving for: I trust in God, I love my country and will respect it's laws. I will play fair and strive to win, but win or lose, I will always do my best. From this pledge you can see how Little League can shape boys and girls into young men and women.

Rainout Policy
When it has been raining or is raining a message will be left on the club line 905-277-5081 by 5:00 PM with the status of the games at Springfield. Softball and MBA games will only be cancelled by a call from your coach. If it begins to rain after 5:00 PM you will either hear from your coach or go to the park and see if the game is in a delay situation. Generally this determination is made by the forecast and current conditions. If it is just a shower we'll try to go ahead, if it is pouring rain, or has rained all day, the diamonds will be unplayable.

If time permits, we will also try and post a notice on the website.

If there is no message on the club line and no notice on the web site, you are expected to show at the park, on time and ready to play.

EARL FOSTER 1929 - 2007

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Earl Foster. Earl was a long standing volunteer with Erindale, serving as President in 1974, the year that Erindale hosted the Canadian Little League Championships. Earl was still frequently seen around the park, beginning in the spring, with his annual park clean-up, and right up to Closing Day, with the presentation of the Chuck Brown Volunteer of the Year award. Earl will be greatly missed by all and we send our condolences to the Foster family.

Earl wrote a fabulous history of the league, in 1996, that can be found by clicking on the "Erindale History" page.

Description of ELLL Divisions (Baseball)
Rookie Ball is a developmental Division and is composed of 8 & 9 year olds. All players are evaluated prior to team formation in the areas of hitting, catching, throwing, and base running. Each player is assigned an individual skill and overall rating. Once the assessment is completed, balanced teams are formed based on player assessment ratings and then assigned to a Manager and Coach. At this level the games begin to conform to baseball with one exception, there is no pitcher, instead, the hitting team’s coach feeds balls into a pitching machine that pitches the ball between 35 and 40 miles per hour. The bases are 60 feet apart and the pitching machine distance is 46 feet. The defensive team places 10 players in the field and all roster players bat whether assigned to a field position or not. Game scores and standings are recorded. All games are played at Springfield Park.No player sits out more that two defensive innings in a game. Division rules are in-place to encourage player rotation in a variety of positions. This is an extremely fun age for children's baseball as they develop and refine their baseball skills. They begin to learn how to hit a fast moving ball, play catcher, steal bases, play the outfield, hit the cutoff man, and maybe even turn the double play. Rookie Ball is a semi-competitive Division, however, coaching emphasis is upon player instruction and development. The first place team receives trophies. Upon completion of the regular season which begins annually on the Saturday after Victoria Day, a post-season playoff tournament is held. The top 2 teams from this tournament play a Championship game and receive trophies on our Closing Day held on the Saturday after Labour Day in September. Each team plays two games in a week, on Sunday, Monday or Wednesday. In addition there is one weekly practice.

Little League is a division for players ages 10, 11 and 12. No player sits out more than two defensive innings in a game. All players on the team bat in a continuous batting order. Coaches focus on developing individual and overall team skills. Game scores and standings are recorded.
Each team plays two games in a week, on Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday. In addition there is one weekly practice. All games are played at Springfield Park. For the more talented player, additional opportunities to participate in a competitive environment will be provided via an organized All-star/Select program. To be eligible for the All-star/Select program players must also play in the house league program. The Major All-stars compete in play downs for the right to represent Canada at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Minor T-Ball is an instructional division for boys and girls ages 4 & 5.  Teams are made up of 8 players, so that each player gets more opportunity to participate. No scores or standings are kept. No evaluations are done for this division, and players are randomly placed on teams. Players are introduced to the concepts of hitting a ball off a tee, throwing and catching. A “softee”, or indoor baseball is used for safety. Upon completion of the season which begins annually on the Saturday after Victoria Day, all teams play a “Championship” game and receive trophies on our Closing Day held on the Saturday after Labour Day in September. Each team has one game and one practice each week on Monday & Wednesday. Duration is approximately 60 minutes. All games are played at Springfield Park or Ellengale Park.

Major T-Ball is a competitive instructional division for boys and girls ages 6 & 7.  Teams are made up of 11 players. All players are evaluated prior to team formation in the areas of hitting, catching, throwing, and base running. Each player is assigned an individual skill and overall rating. Once the assessment is completed, balanced teams are formed based on player assessment ratings and then assigned to a Manager and Coach. No player sits out more that two defensive innings in a game. Division rules are in-place to encourage player rotation in a variety of positions. They continue to learn how to hit a ball off a tee, make outs, play the outfield, hit the cutoff man. Coaching emphasis is upon player instruction and development. All games are played at Springfield Park or Ellengale Park.
