The A's hosted the 2009 Erie League Championship and after finishing 1st place in League were awarded a bye in the first round. After defeating Ohsweken in our first game in the tournament we were matched up against Selkirk who was also undefeated. The winner would move onto the final and wait while the loser would go into the losers bracket and whoever comes out of that bracket would have to beat the undefeated team twice in the final to win the Championship.
Selkirk comes around the long way and defeats Jarvis in the semi-final to compete against the Fisherville A's in the final for the 2009 Erie League Championship.
In a very close game the Fisherville A's defeat Selkirk 3-1 in the final to capture the 2009 Erie League Championship!!
I will have to wait for Dan to give me the batting stats before they are posted. I've posted our win loss record as well as some pitching stats. I didn't have the score book in front of me but I think they are fairly accurate ... I'm sure someone will let me know if they are wrong.
The A's played 32 games this season including 4 tournaments with a 21 win and 11 loss record. We won the Fisherville FunDay Tournament as well as the League Championship. Hopefully next year we play better in the ORSA Tournament and win that one...
Without the scorebook I dont have all the balls strikes and saves but think I'm pretty close with the win / loss record.
Pitching Win Loss Record
Dan Anthony 12-6
George Topp 5-1
Ryan Gill 2-2
Bill Benner 1-0
Mark Swent 1 save
Greg Bacher 1-1
Brent Fehrman 0-1
I've added a couple photos to the My Site News link..
It's been a great season and I look forward to another!!!
The season play has come to a close for 2009 with the A's finishing 1st in League. We finished with a 13-5 win loss record and 116 runs scored with 57 against. We won our last 3 games which helped to secure 1st place giving us the edge over Selkirk and a buy in the League Tournament. I believe our first game will be Sat. the 5th at 11 am. The Tournament begins Fri. night at 7 pm. Our Tournament play this year wasn't what we hoped for, with the exception of winning the Fisherville FunDay Tournament. Our Tournament record ended up 6 wins and 7 losses bringing our season record to 19 wins and 12 losses. Hopefully we do well in the League Tournament to get those numbers up.
Fisherville A's win Fisherville Fun Day Tournament, defeating Jarvis Thursday night. Losing 2-1 to Ingersol Fri night. Defeating Ohsweken 8-3 Sat morning to advance to the semi final against Selkirk. After the A's beat Selkirk 7-2 and Ingersol beat Cayuga 3-0 in the semis, they advance to the Final for the Championship Game.
The A's defeated Ingersol Crush in the Fisherville Fun Day Championship game 5-4. Ingersol had runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out in the 7th. The batter hits a screamer in the dirt to short. Dan Fulsom snags the ball, tags the runner as he's going by and snaps the ball over to 1st to complete the double play to end the game. There were great diving catches all weekend. Jer Fulsom made a spectacular catch in right field, BJ made many throughout the weekend (which I have just come to expect). Dave showed his gracefulness at 1st diving for a line drive and landing hard on the ground. Rob Oneil played. (didn't forget to mention you Rob). Mark Swent and Bill Benner pitched the game against Ohsweken on Fun Day. Mark hadn't pitched in 17 years (since the good old RC days) I also have to mention Nick Moerschelder, the Fisherville A's catcher who did a tremendous job as usual. We've come along ways Nick. I've also been informed Nick has been nominated into the Erie League Hall of Fame. (I believe as a short stop). Billy and Dano great leather up the middle as per normal.
It has been around 20 years since Fisherville has won the Fun Day Tournament. It was a lot of fun, playing in front of a capacity crowd of about 300+ people. Chatting with retired players and coaches from from previous Fisherville Teams (including Decewsville & Rainham Centre) in the beer garden after the games.
Although Topper and Gilly couldn't make it to the Fun Day Tourney, I would like to thank them for their help with the pitching duties this season.
ORSA Tournament in Merlin. Greg Bacher from the Jarvis Rock came with us to Merlin. Who knew Greg was going to be the only pitcher to record a win this weekend. What can I say. We played 1 game since Fisherville Fun Day a month previous. We didn't play bad, we just weren't on our "A" game. Lost the first game to Hickson 5-2. A couple calls from the Umpires didn't go our way and Stone lost it. Jay would have been proud Mike. A well deserved ejection!!
Game 2 against Melbourne found our bats starting to come alive defeating them 7-2.
Game 3 found us up against Morpeth. In the final inning with the score tied at 3 Stone slides past the catcher with no tag applied. Umpire didn't see his hand cross the plate. After we started to celebrate the catcher touches Stone with the ball and the Umpire calls him out. (Stone loses it again, but manages to stay in the game). Game goes to international tie breaker and Morpeth defeats us in extra innings, Morpeth then defeats Hickson and then Dunnville in the semi final (congrats to Dunnville for a 3rd place finish) to move onto the final. Harwood Corners is waiting undefeated so far. Morpeth wins the first game in the Final 6-0 and then defeats Harwood 9-3 in the 2nd game of the Final to win the ORSA Champioship, two years in a row.
Dan Fulsom and Bill Benner have taken on the duties of Managing and Coaching the Team for 2009 and have done a great job keeping us organised. I would like to thank Greg Bacher of the Jarvis Rock and Brent Fehrman of the Cayuga Rebels for assisting us in a couple Tournaments this season.
The 2007 Season has come to an end and the Fisherville A's have finished with a very successfull season capturing the Erie League Championship Tournament on Labour Day Weekend as well as bringing home the Gold from the Eastern Canadian Intermediate C Men's Championship in Richibucto New Brunswick this past weekend.
The League Tournament and The Eastern Canadians found the A's bats on fire. I believe we had 15 home runs at the Easterns. - I will post stats as soon as I get them from Jay.
Hat's off to our Coach, Jay Nagel and to our Manager Bill Benner - it's been quite a journey.
Congats Fisherville A's !!
Recap of Tournaments earlier in The Season
Played in the Jarvis Tournament in May - wasn't our sharpest play ever - but it was early.
Went to Waterdown in June - came out on top - winning the tournament without a loss
Fisherville Funday was a good time -had some really good games and some ? -lost in the semi - finals to Cayuga who went on to beat Jarvis in the final.
Hosted the 2007 ORSA Grand Championship August 10, 11 & 12 in Fisherville.
Although we had some close games, we found ourselves coming up short with a 1-3 record after the round robin.
In the 2003 NAFA World Series "A" Division, hosted in Wisconsin, the A's finished 30th out of 80 teams. The Fisherville A's travelled to Kansas August 26th thru 30th to compete in the "A" Major 2004 NAFA World Series. With the addition of some new young players and the help on the mound from leftside hurler, Greg Bacher of the Jarvis Rock, the A's moved up in the NAFA rankings.
The Fisherville A's place 2nd in the 2004 NAFA World Series - A Major Division
We had 3 players selected to the 1st All World Team. They were Greg Bacher, Dan Fulsom and Mike Stone.
We also had 2 players selected for the 2nd All World Team, They were Ron Chambers and Jason Nagel.
Great work guys.
Game scores and updates will be posted on www.nafafastpitch.com
More pictures posted on 2004 NAFA World Series link.
During the 2006 season we finished 3rd in the Erie League playoff Tournament with Cayga and Jarvis taking 1st and 2nd and then we travelled to Summerside PEI for the Eastern Canadian Championships and finished 3rd - losing 2-1 in the semi final to Novia Scotia.
In the winter months we began talking about trying our luck at NAFA again but it doesn't look like we are going to have all of our pitchers available to go so we will probably pass this season and possibly talk about it again for next year.
