Elrosa Saints smack Meire Grove 14-4
By Randy Olson
Sports Writer
The Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team won a Stearns County League North matchup against the Meire Grove Grovers (1-1 SCL) on an outstanding Sunday afternoon at Saints Field.
A re-scheduled game from April 26th takes place this Friday night under the lights at Saints Field, when Elrosa hosts Lake Henry (2-0) in a Stearns County League interdivisional matchup. First pitch is set for 8:15. Their next home game is not until May 29 at 8:15pm against St.Martin, so bring the kids and family for a nice turnout this Friday in what will be a very entertaining game.
Elrosa 14, Meire Grove 4
Meire Grove drew first blood, scoring twice in the top of the first inning on an error and a sacrifice bunt.
The Saints answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs on no hits, aided by two walks and four hit batsmen off of Grovers starting pitcher Jacob Imdieke.
After leadoff hitter Andy Mages was walked, Dustin Breitbach was hit by a pitch. Mages then stole third base and rounded home on a fielder's choice by Matt Middendorf. Ethan Vogt drew a walk, then Steve Mueller, Jonathan Olmscheid, and Weston Wander were all hit in succession by a pitch. Both Mueller and Wander's contact with the pitch was good for RBI's.
The Saints added three more runs in the bottom of the second, with a sacrifice-fly RBI by Pat Illies and two unearned runs. Ryan Klaphake relieved Imdieke on the mound for the Grovers and proceeded to hit Middendorf with a pitch to load the bases.
Ethan Vogt's fielders choice brought in two runs, one on a Grovers throwing error. The Saints loaded the bases one more time before Meire Grove earned a 5-5-3 double play to end the second inning.
The Grovers came back to make it a 6-4 deficit after three innings, with Greg Nathe and Shawn Meyer each hitting singles to spark the Grovers' offense.
The Saints' lone hit in the third inning came from Breitbach, who launched a double deep to center field. Two pop flies stalled the offense, however.
Elrosa starting pitcher Aaron Vogt earned strikeouts in each of the first three innings and one more in the fifth before being relieved by Zach Weller in the sixth.
The Saints poured on the offense in the fourth and sixth innings, scoring twice in the fourth and six times in the sixth.
Vogt, Mueller, and Olmscheid loaded the bases in the fourth before Wander's single to left field brought in an RBI. Mueller scored the other run. Klaphake worked out of a bases loaded jam with a strikeout and pop fly.
After a scoreless fifth, 13 Saints batted in the bottom of the sixth against Grovers pitcher Matt Imdieke.
A single by Mike Illies drove home pinch runner Zach Mages to begin a six-run rally. Andy Mages hit a nice shot over the Grovers shortstop, good for two RBI that brought Wander and Illies home.
Pat Illies then blasted a two-RBI single to right field, followed by a single-RBI by Mueller for the sixth run of the inning.
Weller worked himself out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh, with three up and three down taking place on both sides of the final two innings.
Jacob Imdieke, Ryan Klaphake, Matt Imdieke, Jeron Klaphake, and Kyle Marthaler all saw action on the mound for Meire Grove.
