Vogt Beats Penn State, Improves to 2-1 (Gophersports.com)
The Minnesota baseball team (16-5, 1-0) won its sixth game in a row as it used a three-run eighth inning to rally from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Penn State (4-14, 0-1) in its Big Ten opener on Friday, Mar. 30 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in State College, Pa. Tonight's game was the first Big Ten contest played at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. With the win, the Golden Gophers are now 5-0 in one-run games this year. Minnesota also collected its eighth come-from-behind victory of the season. It is the third time this season that the Golden Gophers have rallied after trailing in the eighth inning. Minnesota entered the top of the eighth inning trailing 2-0, but pushed three runs across the plate to take a 3-2 lead. With one out, pinch-hitter Jeremy Chlan (Apple Valley, Minn.) got things started with a single to right side on a 3-2 pitch. Junior Jeff DeSmidt (Mahtomedi, Minn.) followed with a pinch-hit single to make it first and second with one out. Sophomore Matt Nohelty (Rothschild, Wis.) laid down a bunt and beat it out for a base-hit to load the bases. Senior Dan Lyons (Rochester, Minn.) drew a base-loaded walk from Penn State reliever Matt Ogrodnik to bring home Chlan to make it 2-1. After Ogrodnik struck out the next batter for the second out of the inning, Nate Hanson (Chanhassen, Minn.) delivered a two-run single to center field which brought home pinch-runner Tijl Vanderwege (St. Paul, Minn.) and Nohelty to give Minnesota its first lead of the game at 3-2. Junior Ethan Vogt (Sauk Centre, Minn.) pitched eight innings, gave up five hits, two runs and struck out four batters to pick up the win to move to 2-1 on the season. Vogt has given up just 12 hits and two runs in 17 innings of work in his last two starts.
