Saints News: Saints Stunned By Hampton (S.C. Herald)

Monday, August 28
Saints Stunned By Hampton (S.C. Herald)
The Elrosa Saints have relied on pitching to get them to the Class C State Amateur Baseball Tournament, and were hoping the combination of pitching and timely hitting would get them to the final weekend.

But on Thursday the Saints went up against some tough pitching and were shut out 2-0 by Hampton in the opening round of tournament action in Red Wing.

Caleb Thiebler struck out 13 and allowed just four hits to out dueled Saints starter Aaron Vogt.

Vogt pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. He struck out one and walked two.

Shawn Schoenberg, a draftee from Spring Hill and Ethan Vogt pitched scoreless relief, but the offense couldn't get anything going against Thiebler, a left-hander who mixed his pitches well to keep Saints hitters off balance.

"He threw about mid 80s, but he hit his spots very well and the ball was always down in the zone," said Ethan Vogt, who played center field until he was called on to pitch.

Dustin Breitbach led the Elrosa offense with two hits.

The loss eliminated the Saints from tournament action. With the one-two punch of Aaron and Ethan Vogt, as well as the addition of Schoenberg, Elrosa was poised to make a solid run at a high finish at this year's tourney. But like in years past, the offense sputtered at a time when it was needed most.

"It was very frustrating to lose out in the first round when we had a good enough team to play into the final weekend," Vogt said. "A few times we had opportunities to get things going but we couldn't get any clutch hits."
