Elrosa Saints thrash Greenwald 9-2

By Randy Olson

The Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team ended a three-game losing slide on Friday night when they defeated Greenwald 9-2 in a Stearns County League-North division matchup.  The must-win situation was crucial as they fight to avoid the play-in round for the upcoming Division playoffs later this month.

The Saints are currently in a third-place tie in the SCL-North with Meire Grove.
This Sunday the Saints wrap up the regular season with another SCL-North showdown, this time at Spring Hill in a 1:30pm game.  It will be a revision of the “Battle for the Keg” between the two neighboring rivals.

Full updates, scheduling notes, and video clips on the Elrosa Saints and the rest of the SCL can be found online at bbejaguars.blogspot.com.

Elrosa 9, Greenwald 2

Greenwald put Elrosa in a 2-0 hole after one inning, with an RBI-double by Brandon Worms scoring Ryan Kraemer to start the game.  The Cubs’ Keith Frieler added a two-out RBI-single for the early lead.

The Saints answered with a two-run third inning.  Two outs after Andy Mages led off with a single, Pat Illies hit an RBI-single for their first run of the game.

Steve Mueller followed with a single, setting up an RBI-single by Ethan Vogt to tie the game at 2-all.

Matt Middendorf earned a double to lead off the Saints’ half of the fifth inning.  Following a walk drawn by Pat Illies, Steve Mueller’s RBI-single put Elrosa in the lead 3-2.

Ethan Vogt brought in run number four with a fielder’s choice before Cubs’ pitcher Nick Radermacher got out of the inning with a strikeout.

Middendorf added an RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth.

Illies and Mueller each added RBI to the run column in the eighth inning.  Illies hit a two-RBI single, bringing in Middendorf and Kevin Kuefler, who both drew walks to lead off.

Elrosa starter Aaron Vogt shut down on the Cubs’ offense after the first inning, totaling seven strikeouts in seven innings of work to earn the win on the mound.

Ethan Vogt closed for Elrosa, earning one strikeout while giving up one hit.

Nick Radermacher was tagged with the loss, earning four strikeouts and giving up 10 hits in six innings of pitching duty.  Cody Imdieke and D.J. Winter worked the final two innings for the Cubs.
