SPICER--The Elrosa Saints finished one game away from the State tournament for the second consecutive year as the Spring Hill Chargers defeated the Saints 13-3 in the State Qualifier game Sunday afternoon in Spicer. The Saints fought their way back through the loser's bracket on Saturday with a 5-2 win over Norway Lake-Sunburg. Ethan Vogt and Matt Middendorf were both named to the All-Tournament team. Spring Hill and Lake Henry both advanced to State as the Lakers drafted Farming pitcher Brad Mergen and the Chargers selected Elrosa pitcher Ethan Vogt. Thanks fans for another great season!
Elrosa 5, Norway Lake-Sunburg 2
Ethan Vogt threw a complete game nine hitter for the Saints as they eliminated Norway Lake-Sunburg for the third consecutive year. Matt Middendorf hit a homerun in the first inning to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Steve Mueller drove in two runs with an RBI single in the 5th inning to blow the game open and make the score 5-0. The Lakers scored their two runs in the 6th inning on a few Saints errors but Vogt shutdown NL-S the remainder of the way. Vogt finished with 8 strikeouts on the afternoon.
Spring Hill 13, Elrosa 3
Spring Hill scored 8 runs in the first inning highlighted by an indecisive and spineless safe-out-safe call at home plate. Four of the runs were unearned off of Elrosa starter Brady Weller. Spring Hill punched their ticket to state for the first time since 2007 with a flurry of hits including Chris Spanier's three run homerun in the 6th inning. Elrosa scored their 3 runs on a three-run homerun by Matt Middendorf in the third inning. With the Saints trailing 8-3, Elrosa loaded the bases with nobody out but failed to score a run off of Charger reliever Brad "Twine Cutter" Terres. Terres pitched 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for Spring Hill.
