Elmira Notre Dame senior guard Sheridan Heine has been selected by the coaches as Most Valuable Player for girls basketball in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference South Large School Division.

Heine averaged 18.9 points per game this season and helped the Crusaders to a 15-6 record and a berth in the Section 4 Class C semifinals. Heine, who will play at Division I Manhattan College, went over 1,000 career points during the postseason.

This year has been completely different for Notre Dame senior Sheridan Heine and Division I bound.

In the past the Crusaders have had success and Heine played a key role in that success.

But, every other year of her career Heine was one of the younger kids on a team with some strong veteran leaders.

From Detta Gublo her sophomore year to Olivia May last year, the Crusaders had other all-state players around her.

This year the Crusaders are Heine's team and her increased role in the offense helped her reach a big milestone on Wednesday night when she scored her 1,000th career point.

"It's great to know that my teammates look up to me," Heine said. "Being a leader is what I've been trying to do. It's nice to know they do look up to me. To make 1,000 points would be great. I'm happy to be at the milestone."

Early in her career getting to 1,000 points was never something that Heine imagined would happen

What a week for Elmira Lady Express AAU...our alumni have started the college basketball season with great team and individual results, and we have three official signings this week. Congratulations to Sheridan Heine Notre Dame senior signing with Manhattan College, Alyssa Mullins Vestal senior signing with Mansfield University, and Jen Shelp Vestal senior signing with Southern New Hampshire University. The girls have worked extremely hard and deserve the opportunity to play at the next level, and there is no doubt in my mind all the girls will do very well. With the signings over the girls can concentrate on this years high school season. Good luck .

.

Congratulations Sheridan Heine....our third Elmira Lady Express player to be offered a full basketball scholarship this year. Sheridan a senior at Notre Dame, is going to be a Manhattan Jasper next season. Manhattan plays in the MAAC, which includes perennial powerhouse Marist College. Sheridan has aspired to play D-I basketball since 7th grade. Last AAU season Sheridan was chosen 1st team All Gym Rat, 1st team All star at the Nike Nationals in Washington, DC. and proves again that hard work does pay off. Nice job!

Sheridan Heine (5-10 guard) Elmira Lady Express/Notre Dame H.S.: An athlete who sees and runs the floor. She will push the ball and pass it ahead to open teammates. Good high-low passer to teammates closer to the rim. Has good finishing moves to the hoop. Gets her share of defensive steals. Projects as D-II player.

Jen Shelp (5-8 guard) Elmira Lady Express/Vestal H.S.: Very good athlete and uses that athleticism well. Good body control and a smooth overall game. Can hit the long-range three-pointer. Can alter and block shots. Very nice all-around player, a coach’s dream. Projects as D-II and, possibly, a D-I player.
