CARDINALS WIN 2007 METRO DISTRICT 13 CHAMPIONSHIP

Starting pitcher, Chris Ramirez, hit a two run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to complete a come-back rally by the Elgin National Cardinals to beat the Bartlett Bats 9-7. Falling behind early, the Cardinals scored two runs in each of the last three innings to claim the Metro District 13 Junior Little League championship, while winning their 30th game in a row.

The Bartlett Bats starting pitcher, Devlin McKay, held the Cardinals in check allowing only two hits and three runs in five plus innings of work. But the Cardinals made the most of their opportunities. In the first inning, Sam Pozezinski walked, stole second and third base and scored when Adrian Martinez was caught trying to steal second.

Martinez came through in the fifth inning with a single advancing to second on Dan Peguero’s base hit. Both runners advanced on a balk, while Martinez scored on Ryan Walker’s ground out and Peguero scored on a passed ball.

The game was suspended in the bottom of the fifth inning, with the Cardinals having two outs and two runners aboard, when lightening halted play. The game resumed on Thursday. Pinch hitter, Ryan Frank hit a long fly ball to make the final out in the inning.

The Cardinals were finally able to tie the game in the sixth inning when Joe Kellenberger and Ramirez walked and were driven in by a monster double to right center field by Martinez.

Then the big blow came in the bottom of the seventh. Steve Warner singled to start the inning, advancing to third with a steal and a wild pitch. With the winning run 90 feet from home, Frank and Kellenberger both struck out. Ramirez then came to the plate and on a 1-0 pitch, hit a towering shot over the left field fence for the game winning home run.

Kellenberger earned the win working the last two innings, allowing no runs and striking out four of the seven batters he faced.

The Cardinals finished the season with 35 wins and only one loss. They swept through the tournament winning six straight games against the best of the 45 team Metro conference. Consisting of 13 and 14 year old boys, the Junior division is the first level of Little League where a full size baseball field is used.

2007 Regular Season Ends

The Elgin National Cardinals ended the 2007 regular season with a record of 29 wins and only one loss. This is the best record in all the Metro League. The Cardinals played great defense to go along with the outstanding offense and stellar pitching. This season was truly a team effort with everyone contributing.

Now it is on to the Metro Tournament. We start at the Bartlett Koehler field on Tuesday June 26 in a pool play format. Our opponents are still to be determined but we feel confident we can give anyone a run for the money.

Good luck to all the players and coaches. And thanks for a great regular season.

Cardinals continue to Roll

After ten games, the Cardinals are 9 and 1. We are the team to beat in the Junior Division.

The pitching has been great, led by Chris, Adrian, Sam and Joe with innings from Steve, Jake and Eric. What a luxury to have all these talented arms.

And the hitting has been awesome. With nine batters hitting over .400 we have a line-up that is the envy of the league. Led by newcomers Tim, Jake and Sam with veterans Adrian and Chris, we don't have a weak bat in the line up.

And the defense has been stellar. Don't hit it to the outfield, that's a sure out!

We plan to continue to give our best effort and the wins should follow.

Go Cardinals, let's make Elgin National proud of us.

This web site will be a work in progress with news and photos added when possible. We will not be posting player stats on-line.

I hope everyone is ready to have fun this year. Let's go Cardinals !

Cardinals Come in Second in METRO Tournament

The Elgin National Junior Cardinals finished a very successful year (28 wins and 9 losses)with a run through the winners bracket of the Metro Championship. In ninety degree heat, the South Elgin Cubs beat the Cards 5 to 10 in nine innings. Chris Ramirez pitched a complete game. In the second game, Jeremiah Schulz also pitched a complete game. Dispite the Cards best effort, another loss let the Cubs become champions.

Even though we didn't win the championship, we played great with true sportsmanship by all the players.

We will be losing Jeremiah Schulz, Matt Levitzke and Alex Jacobo due to age next year. So considering we only had 3 older players, the Cardinals were able to beat almost everyone they faced (except the dreaded Cubs and our arch rival Dodgers).

Thanks also go to our rookies; John Jackson, Joe Kellenberger, David O'Shana, Dan Peguero, Adrian Martinez, Ryan Walker and Marty Hamann. I look forward to having you back next year.

Thanks again Cardinals - you do Elgin National proud !!!
