East Kentwood's Jake Bohn Breaks a MHSAA Record
3/7
- Jake Bohn is putting together a very nice junior season for East
Kentwood this year. He placed 2nd at regionals two weeks ago at 152lbs
to qualify for the state tournament, but his most impressive feat of the
weekend was breaking the MHSAA career record for takedowns. But wait it
gets better, Bohn broke the career record in just 3 years, which means he
should absolutely blow the record out of the water before his high school
career is finished.
After
regionals Bohn's career takedown mark now stands at 827, breaking the old mark
of 825 which was held by 2005 Dundee graduate Martin Rusek. Jake
currently has 399 takedowns this season, nearly 100 away from the season
record of 487, a record held by another East Kentwood wrestler, 1995 graduate
Joe Warren. You might know Warren from his recent world success, he won
the Gold medal at this year's Greco-Roman World Championships. There
must be something in the water in East Kentwood that makes these guys takedown
machines.
Bohn
racked up 154 takedowns in his freshman campaign and 274 last year as a
sophomore. If he continues to improve at this rate, he should be nipping
at the heels of Warren's single season record next year. The national
record for career takedowns is 1,316, which means Bohn will have to come
pretty close to breaking Warren's record in order to have a shot at the
national career record next year.
Bohn
is 41-6 heading into the division 1 state finals this weekend, and is a
contender to place high at 152lbs. His loss in the regional finals came
to Jenison's David Johnson, a returning state champ who is the favorite to win
the 152lb weight class this weekend. Johnson, a senior, has commited to
wrestle for The University of Michigan next year.
Bohn is making his 3rd appearance at The Palace this weekend. He earned division 1 all-state honors last year as a sophomore, placing 7th at 145lbs, and was also a state qualifier as a freshman at 140lbs.
