EIVA Centennial Preseason Tournament

The Centennial Preseason tournament was held this past Sunday at the University of Maryland at Baltimore County. First and foremost, UMBC receives the appreciation of the league for hosting the tournament, and providing everything needed to keep it running smoothly.

Teams participating this year included:

UMBC
Salisbury University
Georgetown University A
Georgetown University B
Montgomery College
George Washington University

Congratulations to this year’s EIVA Centennial Preseason Tournament Champion, Montgomery College!

Per the consensus of the team coaches and captains, the EIVA Centennial Preseason Tournament MVP goes to Jason “Pic” Lee of Montgomery College, who was a main contributor is his teams victories over the day, such as their 10 point comeback in the second game of their match versus Georgetown A.

With each team playing 5 matches, the winner was determined by the end of day match Win-Loss record. In cases in which two teams had the same record, the head-to-head match was examined to determine the winner. If a tie still existed, then games record were employed to break the time.

Records:

1. Montgomery College                4 – 1    (loss to UMBC)
2. George Washington                3 – 2    (losses to Salisbury, Montgomery)
3. Georgetown A                        3 – 2    (losses to GW, Montgomery)
4. UMBC                                3 – 2    (losses to GW, Georgetown A)
5. Salisbury                            2 – 3    (losses to Gtown A, MC, UMBC)
6. Georgetown B                        0 – 5        (losses to GW, MC, Gtown, Salis, UMBC)

The Season has Begun!

During the tournament, many of the teams were able to begin scheduling matches. There are number of things for the team captains to keep in mind before matches can be played:

1.        Before a team can play, you must send me a copy of your roster, which must include the names of everyone participating, as well as their status (part-time student, full-time student, faculty, staff).
2.        If a team plays with a player not listed on file with the commissioner, that team will receive a loss for that match, even if the player is legal and eligible to play. You are allowed to email me with a last minute name and status, as long as it is done prior to game time.
3.        Once matches are scheduled, let me know as soon as possible so that I can schedule a referee. If you do not give me proper advanced notice, then the referee commission will charge you an extra fee, which the hosting team will have to pay.
4.        Once matches begin, don’t forget to keep checking the tournament website for standings info.
5.        You should begin scheduling matches right away. With 16 matches to complete, you should try to play at least 2-3 matches before this semester ends.

During the Match

A reminder that the hosting team must provide a down ref, a scorekeeper, and 2 linesmen. There will be no exception to this. If we are to play at our best, then we must have matches that run smoothly.

At the Preseason Tournament, some of the teams provided some truly horrific refs. Although league matches will be refed by professional refs, at tournaments you will have to provide player-refs. I would highly recommend that you identify one player on the team as your ref, and have that person take the free ref class offered by the Chesapeake Region USAV (http://www.vball-life.org/officials/index.cfm). Some of these courses are even offered online. At a minimum, they should read the entire USAV rule book and be aware of the rules and the proper hand signals. Anyone who still raises one finger in the air to signal a point clearly has never refed before, since they did away with that signal in men’s collegiate volleyball about 3 years ago.

While refs will be provided for you at matches, you will have to provide your own scorekeepers. In reviewing the scoresheets from the tournament, I saw very few that were done correctly. Free scorekeeper classes are offered through the Chesapeake Region, some even online. See < http://www.vball-life.org/officials/index.cfm > for courses, or for a guide on how to do scorebooks.

At your matches, you will have to provide scoresheets, libero tracking sheets, and line-up sheets. Those can be downloaded at http://www.chrva.org/Forms/forms_archive.html.

After the match

Following your matches, report the scores to me asap so that I can update the website. It would also be appreciated if you could provide me with some information on key plays, top players, or any other stats or descriptions that will allow me to do more than declare a win – loss. If you provide me with at least 5-6 sentences about the match, then I will put it up on the conference website, and in the weekly email (see below).

Player of the week

Once matches begin, we will be honoring an EIVA Centennial player of the week. If you have recently played in a league match, and feel that a player from your team or the opposing team is worthy of this title, then let me know and send me the following information:
1.        full name
2.        school, year and concentration/professional interests
3.        position
4.        why he is worthy of Player of the Week (i.e. how did he perform above and beyond other players to deserve the title. For example, “Billy Bob led Y University to an underdog victory over rival X University, registering 7 serving aces. His passing and blocking was clearly the deciding factor in this grueling 5 game match. Billy will be starting for Y University as they take on Z University next Tuesday” Please provide as much info as possible so that I can write a solid paragraph about him)
5.        jpeg picture (optional)

Conference Email List

I am going to ask all captains to send me a list of email addresses for your team. Once the season is going, I will send a weekly league update to everyone. If people to not wish to receive this email, they are free to opt out of it after the first email. Obviously, this is not some email scam, since I am sending it from my personal email account to yours.

This update will include any recent newsletters, Player of the Week, results from the previous week, and upcoming matches. The point of this weekly email is to get players excited about playing in the league. When they see their team’s name and record, they will be more driven to come to practices and compete fiercely in the next match.

EIVA Newsletter # 1
Hello everyone…

This will serve as the first of a series of newsletters that I will be sending out over the course of the year, briefing you on developments with the league.

Firstly, to review everything that was discussed at the captains meeting on October 12th at UMBC:

The teams competing in the league this year include:

The George Washington University
Georgetown University
Salisbury University
McDaniel College
UMBC
Loyola College
The Johns Hopkins University
Montgomery College
Towson University

This is a total of 9 teams. NOVA (Northern Virginia Community College) will not be participating this year. However, any of you are free to set up scrimmages with them or invite them to your tournaments. Other nearby teams who are not participating in our league but who you are free to scrimmage include American University and Frostburg University.

A contact list for team reps is attached in Excel format. Each teams contact information can also be found on the league website. If this changes over the course of the season, be sure to notify me.

EIVA-CENTENNIAL LEAGUE FORMAT

As stated at the captains meeting, to complete the league every team must play every other team twice, once at “home” and once “away”, although realistically the matches can be played at any location. This translates to a total of 16 matches that must be played. The deadline for completing all matches (subject to a 1 week shift) is March 22nd. Team captains are responsible for scheduling their own team’s matches. At the EIVA-Centennial preseason tournament we will hold a 1 hour scheduling meeting (discussed below), but you are encouraged to begin emailing and calling team reps as soon as you have available dates. With 16 matches to play, you should aim to complete about half of these matches in the fall semester.

If the season ends and all matches have not been completed, then the missing match will be adjudicated a loss for both teams. The exception to this rule is if a match had already been scheduled, and one team was willing to honor the date while the other could not, then the first team will get a win to the other’s loss. The point is that once a match is scheduled and I have been notified, then both teams are expected to honor that commitment, unless both teams can agree to reschedule.

The “home” team will be responsible for the referee fees, which will likely be $60 per match. Once a match date is known, please tell me as soon as possible so that I can schedule your referee for you. If you do not advise me of the match date and location in advance, then the referring commission will likely charge you $80 for the match because of the short notice.

The team hosting the match (which may or may not be the home team) is responsible for providing 2 line judges, 1 down ref and 1 scorekeeper. The scorekeeper MUST know how to do proper books, which includes tracking the libero and watching rotations. Many games have been decided by incorrect server calls. Many of your schools have women’s club volleyball teams. Since they may be playing in a league of their own, I would recommend that you trade off working each others matches. At tri-matches, the team that is resting will provide the line judges.

All matches must be played with the Molton Pro Touch volleyball. This is the official volleyball of Mens NCAA, of EIVA, and of NIRSA.

The EIVA league fee is $75. This has to be paid to Shang Hsiung, the commissioner of EIVA. Included in your league fee is 1 Molton Pro Touch volleyball. If you do not require an invoice, you may send your fee in immediately to:

        Shang Hsiung
        6504 Westmoreland Avenue
        Takoma Park, Maryland 20912-4752

If you require an actual invoice, I hope to have one within a week and can forward that on to you.

At the end of the season, based upon teams’ season record, we will designate an EIVA Centennial League Champion. This is the highest team honor given in the EIVA Centennial. In addition, we will conclude the season with a conference tournament, likely to be held on March 27th and/or March 28th, where we will pronounce an EIVA Centennial Tournament Champion.

The top 2-3 finishers from the EIVA-Centennial will proceed on to the EIVA division tournament, to be held at the University of Maryland on April 3rd.

Volleyball Club Nationals will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina this year. Any team, regardless of their finish in EIVA-Centennial, is eligible to participate in this 4 day tournament. If your team will be participating, then it is my recommendation that you a) submit your completed entry as early as possible (around January or February is best) to ensure that you get a spot in the proper division, and b) notify me, so that I can update NIRSA of your performance in the regular season EIVA matches.

EIVA-CENTENNIAL RULES

The EIVA-Centennial will abide by standard USAV rules. The rules are available on line at www.usav.org. The referees assigned to your matches will be familiar with the rules. At the teams’ discretion and the referee’s approval, you may include a “chaser rule” in your match. This will need to be clarified with the referee prior to the start of the match. Matches will be best of 5 to 25 points, with a final deciding match to 15 if needed.

All uniforms must be matching. This includes the shorts. A distinguishable number must appear on the front and on the back. The libero must wear a different colored jersey and must abide by all libero rules.

Any full-time faculty, full-time staff, or full- or part-time student is eligible to participate in the league matches. For teams intending on proceeding to Nationals, be advised that NIRSA rules   will differ, and faculty, staff and part-time students will not be allowed to play.

In order for a player to be eligible for participation, every team captain must email me their name and status (faculty, staff, part-time student or full-time student). A player may be added to the team’s roster prior to the start of a game, as long as I am emailed the player’s name and status prior to game time. The league reserves the right to request supporting documents verifying a player’s affiliation with the university, such as a letter from the registrar or a pay stub. Teams with unusually strong players in contention for a top spot will surly be asked for supporting documentation. Teams found to be participating with illegal players will be met with serious punishments, including loss of matches and potential expulsion from the league.

Lastly, as the commissioner of the EIVA-Centennial, I reserve the right to modify or change any of these rules over the course of the season in the interest of generating fair competition.

EIVA-CENTENNIAL PRESEASON TOURNAMENT

The EIVA-Centennial Preseason tournament will be held at UMBC on November 16th. The cost will be $50. Teams interested in participating must send me their tournament fee by November 7th. We will not have room for every team in the league, so I encourage you to send me your check early to reserve your spot. Make checks payable to Daniel Davidson, and send to:

        Daniel Davidson
        2301 E St, NW #A201
        Washington, DC 20037

In the middle of the tournament, we will take a 1 hour lunch break. Team captains will be encouraged to bring a calendar with available dates for matches, to sit down and schedule matches for the rest of the semester.

OTHER STUFF

The EIVA-Centennial Website is now operational, and can be accessed at www.eteamz.com/eivacentennial. Over the course of the season, you will be able to log on and check scores, schedules and standings. I encourage every team captain to keep his team’s link updated, with rosters and reports. These websites are an excellent way to communicate with your players regarding practice times and matches, and can be used for recruiting purposes as well. Over the next few days, I will be emailing each of the team captains with their username and password for accessing their team’s page.

A fundraiser that I recommend for everyone can be found at www.campusfundraiser.com. This involves a four hour credit card sign up that usually nets around $300-$600, depending on the number of participants. Another excellent fundraiser is to host your own tournaments. If you are interested in doing so, you are free to invite other collegiate teams from outside the EIVA Centennial, including adult USAV teams. If you let me know, I will make sure that all teams in EIVA (including the other division of EIVA) are notified.

With that, I wish you the best in your seasons. As I tried to iterate at the meeting, we have a lot of matches to complete this year. It is my strongest recommendation that you begin scheduling those now, potentially even before the Preseason tournament.

If you have any questions or concerns over the course of the season, do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Sincerely,

Daniel Davidson
