Final Newsletter
Team Captains:
This newsletter contains the final standings, information regarding this weekends tournaments, info on Nationals, and info on the All-Conference team.
1. FINAL STANDINGS:
As outlined in the beginning of the year, any unplayed matches would be counted as a loss for both teams. Because of a very late start, a number of matches were unable to be scheduled for many teams. The only team to schedule and play in all 14 matches was the George Washington University.
Team, Number of Matches Played
1. The George Washington University,14
2. UMBC, 13
Salisbury University,13
4. Montgomery College,12
Georgetown University,12
Loyola College, 12
7. McDaniel College, 11
Johns Hopkins University, 11
In the event of identical records, head-to-head match record, and then game record, were taken into account. Factoring in losses for games not played, the final EIVA Centennial League Standings are:

Congratulations to all teams. The EIVA Centennial is one of the most comprehensive, involved leagues in the country. In most leagues, teams come together a few times a year for regional tournaments. It takes a lot of work and dedication to play as many individual matches as we did. You should be proud of your level of responsibility and involvement.
Each team will receive an email from the Refereeing Commission for your bill. The cost of each match was split evenly among participating teams, with the possible exception of a late cancellation on the part of 1 team in which a referee had already been booked. Single matches cost $80, and Tri-match matches cost $70. I am not sure of the specifics of referee billing, and any issues should be taken up with either me or the Ref Scheduler, Mr. Tracy Shadle (tracy.shadle@chrva.org). Please make arrangements to pay the Ref bill immediately upon its arrival.
2. EIVA GRAND TOURNAMENT, 4/3
As I put in an earlier email, the EIVA Grand tournament is being held this Saturday at the University of Maryland. In previous years, Shang Hsiung (the Coach of UMD) requested only 2 teams from the EIVA Centennial. This year, he has request 4 for sure, and possibly a 5th. The teams include:
1. GW
2. MC
3. Gtown
4. JHU
5. Salisbury (pending the ok from Shang and from Dave Lyons)
The cost is free (included in your registration free from earlier). I have not received any information as to the precise start time. In the absence of any information, I will advise teams to be at the Univ of Maryland Record Armory Gym at 8am. The likely start time will be 9am with an 8:30 Captains Meeting, but sometimes these tournaments start at 8 am. If / when I receive more information, I will forward it on. Since we also have a full tournament on Sunday, I will advise teams to successfully utilize their bench players so as to not overdo yourselves this weekend (particularly the teams heading to nationals next week).
3. EIVA CENTENNIAL TOURNAMENT, 4/4
As you may remember from previous years, each year we crown two champions. The first goes to the Conference Champion, which is the team with the best record in regular-season EIVA Centennial play. This award has been clinched by the George Washington University. The second award goes to the Centennial Tournament Champion, and is given to the team that wins the one-day EIVA Centennial Tournament. As you know, this year’s tournament will be held this Sunday (4/4) at the George Washington University.
Teams: All eight teams from the Centennial Conference will be attending. Teams will be seeded in the tournament according to their finish in regular-season EIVA Centennial play.
Time: The first match will begin at 9 am (or as soon as possible). Subsequent matches will begin as soon as the previous match has concluded. Playoffs will begin at 3 pm.
Format: The morning will begin with two pools of four teams. Each team will play each team in its pool once. The format of these matches will likely be best of 3, with the first two matches to 21 and the deciding match to 15 (format subject to change, will be announced Sunday morning). Pool play matches, to begin promptly at 3pm, will involve a gold and silver bracket, and will single elimination. The winner of the Gold bracket will be crowned Centennial Tournament Champion.

Location: The tournament is held at the Smith Center, located on the corner of 22nd and F in the District of Columbia (NW). The easiest way here for the Baltimore teams is to take I-95 South to the Capital Beltway (I-495) West (towards Rockville). About 15 min later, exit “The George Washington Parkway”. Follow the signs to Washington DC, taking the Roosevelt Bridge over into the District. Exit E st, then Virginia Ave. If you take the incorrect bridge over (something that happens very frequently), do not panic, you are close. Numbered Streets run North-South and Lettered Streets run East-West. If you are lost, call my cell phone (202) 365-3053.
Cost: The EIVA Centennial tournament will cost $95 per team. This is $30 cheaper than last year’s tournament, and has been priced right at cost. This pays for refs for playoffs, gym fees, new balls and Tournament / All-Conference awards. If you are paying directly, then please bring cash or a check to the tournament. Checks should be addressed to “Daniel Davidson – EIVA Commissioner.” If you are submitting payment via your school account, PLEASE FILE YOUR REQUEST THIS WEEK. This form of payment can take upwards of a month, and payment for this tournament (as well as for the refs) must be received prior to the summer, or it will affect your entrance into the league next year. Next season, we have 11 teams bidding for a place in the EIVA Centennial League. Priority goes to existing teams, but if there has been a problem with past funds, your bid will be placed at the bottom of the stack. For those teams requiring an official invoice and Fed Tax ID#, please see the other attachment to this email.
4. 2004 CENTENNIAL ALL–CONFERENCE TEAM
We will be nominating 14 players to the 2004 Centennial All-Conference Team. This will be done by position, for a First Team All-Conference and a Second Team All-Conference. These teams will then play exhibition games against each other (later in the year, on a voluntary basis). On Sunday, Team Captains will be asked to nominate players to each of the following positions:
First Team
Setter
Middle Blocker
Middle Blocker
Outside / Opposite Hitter
Outside / Opposite Hitter
Outside / Opposite Hitter
Libero
Second Team
Setter
Middle Blocker
Middle Blocker
Outside / Opposite Hitter
Outside / Opposite Hitter

Libero
Players nominated to First Team receive 2 votes. Players nominated to Second Team receive 1 vote. Although nominations may be based off of tournament play, these nominations should reflect player’s performance principally during regular-season matches. Prior to playoffs, All-Conference nominations will be submitted and tallied. Prior to the final match (5 pm), the All-Conference Teams will be announced.
The player with the most votes, in addition to occupying a First Team position, will be named the Centennial Most Valuable Player. In 2003, the Centennial MVP was Omar Didi from the George Washington University. In 2002, the Centennial MVP was Eddie Ferrer from Georgetown University.
5. NIRSA RANKINGS
For the 4 teams heading to Nationals (GW, Gtown, MC and UMBC), I will submit the results of the EIVA Grand Tournament and the EIVA Centennial Tournament to NIRSA. These results will be taken into account in the final rankings, to appear April 7th. I look forward to seeing all of you in Charlotte, and I encourage all of us to come to each others’ matches and root for each other.
Thank you for a great season.

Third Newsletter
February 4th, 2004
Team Reps...
There are a lot of important things in this newsletter, so read it carefully. You will be held to everything in this. Feel free to forward it to your teams as well, so that they are involved in the running of the league.
SCHEDULE THROUGH FEB 15. the schedule through Feb 15 has been posted on the website, and the dates have been sent to the refereeing commission. If you have not double checked your commitments, do this asap and let me know of any errors.
SCHEDULE AFTER FEB 15. Below is the most updated schedule for the remainder of the season. It is also attached in a spreadsheet, which is much easier to read. You have until Friday night to email me back with any changes. On Saturday morning this schedule will be posted on the website and forwarded to the refereeing commission.
EIVA CENTENNIAL TOUR. The EIVA Centennial tournament will tentatively be held on Sunday April 4th at GW. There are two reasons for why it is so late in the year. First, teams could use the extra week or two to schedule matches. We have 16 matches this year, more than any previous year. Because of snow problems, nobody was able to knock out any matches last year. Second, this is the only weekend where everybody has returned from Spring Break. I AM OPENING THIS UP FOR DISCUSSION - if you have an argument as to why it should be held earlier (ie March 27th or 28th), such as the dangerous proximity to Nationals on April 8-10, then email all of us back. The grand EIVA tournament, to which the top 2-3 teams from EIVA Centennial will be extended an invitation, will be held on April 3rd at UMD. While on one hand two days of back to back tournaments is very heavy, it will mirror Nationals, to which many of you are going.
NATIONALS
If you want to go to nationals, being held driving-distance this year in Charlotte, NC, then you should submit your materials ASAP. Do this NOW. Nationals fills up very quickly, and you risk being thrust into Division III, or worse, not having spot at all. Gtown and GW have already submitted materials (Gtown is currently ranked #14 for Division II). If your school has less than 15,000, you will be in Division II. If it has more, you will be in DIAA or DIII. Be sure to let me know if you are attending nationals, so that I can talk up your progress and achievement to Nirsa, and get you better rankings. www.nirsa.org.
A few notes on the schedule below:
The Towson tournament is scheduled for 2/21. I am not sure of the times of play yet, but I believe there will be 12pm, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm slots (Towson boys, get back to me with slots). I will design the matches. If you have strong preferences for what time you play, who you play, etc, let me know. Otherwise, I will put you against teams that you have not yet faced. Right now teams attending include: GW, Towson, Gtown, Loyola, JHU, McDaniel. If you are not on this list but want to play, let me know.
We have reached an agreement with Johns Hopkins regarding their participation. They have agreed to make the Towson tour (3-4 matches for them), and 1-2 local tri- or quad-matches (Loyola? UMBC? Towson? If you guys are having tris, invite JHU). They will also be able to make the final EIVA Centennial tournament. Regarding the remainder of their matches, they will have to be played at Hopkins. Their court time is Tuesday nights (JHU - are there any other dates in which we could play?). Contact them starting now to reserve your slot. If all Tuesday night slots have already been filled, and JHU cannot come to you to play the match, then it will be adjudicated a loss for Hopkins. I am asking all of you to work with them to help them get in all 16 of their matches. They have no means of travelling this year, which is why it is difficult for them to come to you.
There are a number of slots that are still open where schools have scheduled tri-matches, but have not found the third team yet. These are designated with XXXX. If you want this slot, contact the home team directly.
A STERN reminder to host schools - while I am responsible for getting the ref to your place, YOU are responsible for providing 2 linesmen, 1 scorekeeper, 1 downref with whistle, and all of the necessary forms (lineups, libero tracking, scoresheet, available at www.chrva.org). It is highly recommended that you have a second scorekeeper to do libero tracking and keep score. These are not league requirements - these are the requirements of the Refereeing Commission. If the ref has to call lines because the linesmen are not doing a good job, or worry about net calls because the down ref doesn't know what he is doing, then he cannot do a totally effective job, and will be forced to make some bad calls because he had to pay attention to something else. We had lots of this last year - refs making bad calls because they had to do all of the work.
The below list of individuals are those who have been cleared for play (also included in the spreadsheet). YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO ASK FOR IDENTIFICATION PRIOR OR AFTER TO MATCH. If you suspect a player is illegal, you may ask for ID and check him against this list, which I will post on the website. Playing with an illegal player will result in forfeiture of the match, and possible suspension from the league. Team Captains - if you are playing with a player who is legal but is not on this list, email me their name, status, and year anytime prior to the start of the match. EIVA reserves the right to ask for supporting documents (ie verification from the registrar) regarding any players in question. Also, your players should bring ID with them to the matches. A drivers licence is fine. A student ID, although preferable because it clears everything up, is not necessary.
Notes to individual schools -
JHU - send me your list of players, complete with status (full time, part time) and year. Also, please confirm that you can make Towson, and 1-2 local (ie Baltimore) tri-matches, and that you will work with the schools starting now to schedule home matches during your Tues slot. Send out an email with all of the dates, and we will respond. You should also look into an ad hoc weekend slot so that the DC teams can play you without having to fight traffic. The goal is for you not to have to forfeit a single match this season.
MC - We cannot make the tri-match on 3/13, but we can make up that match with you at GW on 4/1 or 3/11. Please let me know if these dates are acceptable.
Loyola - can you make the 3/13 match at MC? Let them know now. Also, we (GW) need 1 more match with you. You said you are free every Monday/Wed. How is 3/3 or 3/1?
Towson - details on tour... confirm 2/21, confirm time slots, confirm 2 courts. Also, we (GW) need one more match with you. Can we come to you on Feb 29th?
UMBC - I have not heard from you in a while. By not responding to the previous emails you have implicitly agreed to the quad match this Sunday at Salisbury. Also, are you available to play at GW on 3/4? It is a late night Thurs slot.
Gtown and McDaniel - Tri-match at GW on 2/22. We just got the date. Is that acceptable?
TO ALL - CONFIRM THESE DATES AND GET BACK TO ME ASAP. YOU HAVE 16 MATCHES TO PLAY. PLAN AHEAD SO THAT YOU CAN MAKE ALL OF THEM.

EIVA Centennial Preseason Tournament
The Centennial Preseason tournament was held this past Sunday at the University of Maryland at Baltimore County. First and foremost, UMBC receives the appreciation of the league for hosting the tournament, and providing everything needed to keep it running smoothly.
Teams participating this year included:
UMBC
Salisbury University
Georgetown University A
Georgetown University B
Montgomery College
George Washington University
Congratulations to this year’s EIVA Centennial Preseason Tournament Champion, Montgomery College!
Per the consensus of the team coaches and captains, the EIVA Centennial Preseason Tournament MVP goes to Jason “Pic” Lee of Montgomery College, who was a main contributor is his teams victories over the day, such as their 10 point comeback in the second game of their match versus Georgetown A.
With each team playing 5 matches, the winner was determined by the end of day match Win-Loss record. In cases in which two teams had the same record, the head-to-head match was examined to determine the winner. If a tie still existed, then games record were employed to break the time.
Records:
1. Montgomery College 4 – 1 (loss to UMBC)
2. George Washington 3 – 2 (losses to Salisbury, Montgomery)
3. Georgetown A 3 – 2 (losses to GW, Montgomery)
4. UMBC 3 – 2 (losses to GW, Georgetown A)
5. Salisbury 2 – 3 (losses to Gtown A, MC, UMBC)
6. Georgetown B 0 – 5 (losses to GW, MC, Gtown, Salis, UMBC)
The Season has Begun!
During the tournament, many of the teams were able to begin scheduling matches. There are number of things for the team captains to keep in mind before matches can be played:
1. Before a team can play, you must send me a copy of your roster, which must include the names of everyone participating, as well as their status (part-time student, full-time student, faculty, staff).
2. If a team plays with a player not listed on file with the commissioner, that team will receive a loss for that match, even if the player is legal and eligible to play. You are allowed to email me with a last minute name and status, as long as it is done prior to game time.
3. Once matches are scheduled, let me know as soon as possible so that I can schedule a referee. If you do not give me proper advanced notice, then the referee commission will charge you an extra fee, which the hosting team will have to pay.
4. Once matches begin, don’t forget to keep checking the tournament website for standings info.
5. You should begin scheduling matches right away. With 16 matches to complete, you should try to play at least 2-3 matches before this semester ends.
During the Match
A reminder that the hosting team must provide a down ref, a scorekeeper, and 2 linesmen. There will be no exception to this. If we are to play at our best, then we must have matches that run smoothly.
At the Preseason Tournament, some of the teams provided some truly horrific refs. Although league matches will be refed by professional refs, at tournaments you will have to provide player-refs. I would highly recommend that you identify one player on the team as your ref, and have that person take the free ref class offered by the Chesapeake Region USAV (http://www.vball-life.org/officials/index.cfm). Some of these courses are even offered online. At a minimum, they should read the entire USAV rule book and be aware of the rules and the proper hand signals. Anyone who still raises one finger in the air to signal a point clearly has never refed before, since they did away with that signal in men’s collegiate volleyball about 3 years ago.
While refs will be provided for you at matches, you will have to provide your own scorekeepers. In reviewing the scoresheets from the tournament, I saw very few that were done correctly. Free scorekeeper classes are offered through the Chesapeake Region, some even online. See < http://www.vball-life.org/officials/index.cfm > for courses, or for a guide on how to do scorebooks.
At your matches, you will have to provide scoresheets, libero tracking sheets, and line-up sheets. Those can be downloaded at http://www.chrva.org/Forms/forms_archive.html.
After the match
Following your matches, report the scores to me asap so that I can update the website. It would also be appreciated if you could provide me with some information on key plays, top players, or any other stats or descriptions that will allow me to do more than declare a win – loss. If you provide me with at least 5-6 sentences about the match, then I will put it up on the conference website, and in the weekly email (see below).
Player of the week
Once matches begin, we will be honoring an EIVA Centennial player of the week. If you have recently played in a league match, and feel that a player from your team or the opposing team is worthy of this title, then let me know and send me the following information:
1. full name
2. school, year and concentration/professional interests
3. position
4. why he is worthy of Player of the Week (i.e. how did he perform above and beyond other players to deserve the title. For example, “Billy Bob led Y University to an underdog victory over rival X University, registering 7 serving aces. His passing and blocking was clearly the deciding factor in this grueling 5 game match. Billy will be starting for Y University as they take on Z University next Tuesday” Please provide as much info as possible so that I can write a solid paragraph about him)
5. jpeg picture (optional)
Conference Email List
I am going to ask all captains to send me a list of email addresses for your team. Once the season is going, I will send a weekly league update to everyone. If people to not wish to receive this email, they are free to opt out of it after the first email. Obviously, this is not some email scam, since I am sending it from my personal email account to yours.
This update will include any recent newsletters, Player of the Week, results from the previous week, and upcoming matches. The point of this weekly email is to get players excited about playing in the league. When they see their team’s name and record, they will be more driven to come to practices and compete fiercely in the next match.
