Panthers hand Gators 26-14 loss

There's no rest for the weary.
The Milton High football team has been fighting the flu for a week. But Friday night provided a quick get-well boost.
The Panthers (3-0, 1-0 District 1-4A) battled through their adversity to produce a 26-14 road victory against Escambia (2-1, 0-1 1-4A) at Emmitt Smith Field.
"Hopefully, we'll heal up a little bit," Milton head coach Mike McMillion said after the game. "We need a little healing time right now, but of course, the problem with healing time is that there isn't any."
The win was the Panthers' first in the new district, and could set a course for the rest of their season.
"(District 1-4A) has got a bunch of good players, a bunch of good coaches and a bunch of good teams," McMillion said. "So I think every (district) game is going to be a dog fight."
Milton junior quarterback Matt Floyd led the Panthers' dog fight, throwing for 169 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown pass.
The first quarter, however, was all about defense for both teams. Escambia's Joe Grimsley and Malcum Townsend came up with a quarterback sack that stopped a 46-yard drive by the Panthers.
The Panthers then halted the Gators with a quarterback sack on third down to force a punt.
Milton began to take charge offensively at the start of the second quarter when Floyd connected with wide receiver Avante Jennings for a 31-yard touchdown.
Down 7-0, the Gators were not able to gain any yardage on their next possession. The Gators punted from their own 24, and the Panthers recovered a bad snap to get the ball at the 8-yard line.
After a couple of runs by Patrick Lloyd and a five-yard pass from Floyd, Casey Freeman ran one yard to the end zone to put the Panthers up 13-0.
The Gators, who hadn't been down by 13 points this season, put together a 59-yard drive to get down to the Panthers' 9. Escambia quarterback Quay Dirden then ran it in the end zone on a keeper.
The Gators tried to keep their momentum going into the third quarter. After a 55-yard run by Dirden, running back Michael Travis then ran two yards for a touchdown to give the Gators a 14-13 lead. But Milton swung the momentum back when Freeman recovered a Gator fumble to give the Panthers the ball on their 43. Floyd threw a 53-yard pass to Jennings to help get Milton down to Escambia's 4. Lloyd then ran four yards for another TD to put Milton up 19-14.
The Panthers started the fourth quarter with an 72-yard drive. From the Escambia 12, Floyd handed the ball off to Lloyd who passed it off to Jennings on a reverse to score the Panthers last touchdown and make the final 26-14.
"Offensively, we didn't help our defense any," Escambia head coach Jimmy Nichols said. "The bottom line is, we didn't deserve to win. the best team won."
The Panthers now will look toward getting better and preparing for their game next week against Fort Walton Beach.
"It's been one of the hardest weeks at practice because you don't know if you're going to get injured or if you're going to catch this flu," Milton defensive tackle Aaron Freeman said. "Hopefully, this next week, we'll get another W."

"The principle is competing against yourself. It's about self-improvement, about being better than you were the day before." - Steve Young
