Escambia rallies to defeat Washington
EHS v Wash 01
Mac Knefely • News Journal Correspondent • September 19, 2009
Gators battle back to defeat Wildcats, 28-21 on Friday.
Down 21-3 after two quarters, Washington High opened up its playbook in attempt to produce a comeback win.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats, Escambia High had other ideas.
The Gators weren't flashy, just consistent in eating away the clock in the fourth quarter en route to a 28-21 victory at Washington's Sherman Robinson field Friday night.
Despite the win, Escambia coach Jimmy Nichols said the defense must improve before playing Milton next week.
"Our defense really didn't play well tonight," Nichols said. "But our offense was there; our running game looked good tonight, but defensively, we've just got to get better."
Washington got the crowd back into the game with an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Gary Brooks to start the second half, one of several positive plays for the 'Cats after intermission. They pulled within a touchdown late, but an onside kickoff was recovered by Escambia with under a minute to play.
"We saw some positive things in the second half," Washington coach Chet Bergalowski said. "That's all I can ask for out of the kids; just try to play better each quarter, and they did. We played very well in the secondary, and we made a couple of good catches. But we just made so many mental mistakes that put us behind the eight ball, and fumbling. We've worked so hard on that. Sometimes it's psychological or emotional, and we've just got to keep correcting it."
The 'Cats looked impressive early, as Kardel Snow recovered a fumble on the game's opening drive. Washington drove down to the 8-yard line before settling for a 25-yard field goal by William Reed with 10:46 left in the first quarter.
"We've been practicing real hard preparing for Washington," Dirden said. "We were clicking, but we had a lot of mistakes that can be fixed. We could execute more blocks, and should do a whole lot better. We just need to pound that thing. We're way better on defense than we showed. We go against them every day and they stop us, so I know they could've stopped them better. Next week you're going to see the real defense of Escambia."
