Escambia High Gators

Escambia topples W. Florida
EHS v WFT

For the Escambia High football team on Friday night, a 20-12 win against West Florida High just wasn't good enough.
Well, it was a win, but I'm not really happy with it," Escambia coach Jimmy Nichols said after the game at Marlon L. Bullock Stadium. "The defense did not play well at all.
"... Maybe we're not as good as we thought we were."
Or maybe the Jaguars defense was tougher than Escambia expected.
The West Florida defense, led by linebacker Andrew Baker, was able to stop the Gators in Jaguars territory throughout the second half.
"It was all right, but there's room for improvement," said Escambia running back Michael Travis, who ran for about 130 yards and scored a touchdown. "We need to work on not making stupid mistakes."
One of those mistakes came at the start of the third quarter when West Florida linebacker Kelly Thorton recovered a fumble on Escambia's 33.
On the Gators' next possession, West Florida held the Escambia offense on a third-down play on the Jaguars' 21-yard line. As a result, the Gators had to settle for a 32-yard field goal by kicker Parker McIntosh.
That was the only time the Gators would score in the second half.
Escambia scored on its first possession after quarterback Quay Dirden ran for 44 yards to give the Gators 1st-and-goal from the 1-yard line.
Travis then ran it in for the touchdown, and the Gators were up 7-0 to start the first quarter.
West Florida answered quickly, though, with a 65-yard touchdown run by Antawn Carter. The Jaguars' 2-point conversion failed, making the score 7-6 at 6:07 in the first quarter.
Escambia scored again on the next possession when Dirden threw a 40-yard pass to Allen Moore, who ran another four yards to the end zone. The Gators were up 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.
West Florida scored its last touchdown of the game in the second quarter after a 73-yard drive that got the Jaguars down to the Gators' 3.
Sophomore quarterback Kyle Faxlanger then punched it in the end zone to make the score 14-12.
Escambia scored its first field goal of the night, when the Gators were held on a 3rd-and-1 play on the Jaguars' 20. McIntosh then made a 30-yard field goal with 2:23 left in the half.
Dirden passed for about 84 yards and one touchdown.
Carter ran for about 99 yards for the Jaguars, and wide receiver LaMarcus Farmer ran for 56 yards.
"We're getting better," West Florida head coach Ronnie Gilliland said. "I think we can compete with people and that gives us a little hope."

"The principle is competing against yourself. It's about self-improvement, about being better than you were the day before." - Steve Young
