Richardson, Escambia rout Panama City Bay

Long live King Richardson. His court wasn't half-bad either. Escambia's Trent Richardson was his old self Friday night, but the school's homecoming king had plenty of help in a 54-0 thrashing of Panama City Bay at Emmitt Smith Field.
"Everybody was on their P's and Q's tonight," said Richardson, who finished with 224 yards on 12 carries. "Our fullback (James McKee) had three TDs. (Quarterback Anthony) Porterfield had two TDs. I had two. I told everybody we were going to go up from here. It starts tonight."
Escambia (3-3) hopes its star is right.
While Friday was fun — the Gators posted their first shutout since pasting West Florida High 42-0 in 2006 — stiffer tests are around the corner. Two of the next three games will determine their postseason fate against district opponents Washington (next Friday) and Pine Forest (Nov. 7).
"We can't dwell on this game too much," said Porterfield, who enjoyed a perfect 4-of-4 night for 88 yards with both touchdown passes finding Quay Dirden. "We just looked at this game as a stepping stone. We've got to gear up for these next few weeks."
Perhaps the biggest win Friday night didn't come on the field.
With Porterfield's newfound success in the passing game, Escambia hopes opposing defenses will game plan for someone other than No. 1.
"It felt like I was out there playing a video game," Porterfield said. "I could do what I wanted. I felt comfortable and the game really slowed down for me.
"People think they can put eight and nine in the box and stop Trent. They think Trent is Escambia. They have to pick their poison now."
No doubt it still starts with Richardson. Literally.
On the game's first play from scrimmage, the nation's No. 7 player stuttered to his left on the soggy ground, leapt over one defender and raced virtually untouched 43 yards for his 14th touchdown of the season.
In the process, Richardson eclipsed the 1,000-yard plateau for the second consecutive season.
"If we ain't winning, it doesn't really matter. I had all those yards last year and we didn't win," he said. "I think this will open a lot of doors for us the rest of the season."
The margin of error is slim. Richardson understands that, noting a greater sense of urgency about his teammates in their most complete performance of the year.
"A lot of us won't play football after this season," Richardson told his fellow Gators before Friday's kickoff, "so let's be able to look back with good memories."
Obviously, Richardson doesn't fit into that uncertain category.
Barring something unforeseen, a promising career is waiting in the wings. For now, as any big-time player should, he's living in the present.
"This got everybody pumped up," Richardson said. "This right here, I believe will capitalize on."
The King has spoken.
