Escambia High Gators:Schedules and Varsity Game Summary

Escambia High Gators

Richardson rolls 419 with six touchdowns
02 Milton 08
Article by PNJ reporter D.C. Reeves • dcreeves@pnj.com • September 13, 2008
A number that seemed destined to define Trent Richardon's legacy is now washed away.
Goodbye 407. Hello 419.
When it seemed impossible to do so, the Escambia High tailback upped the ante against Milton on Friday night, totaling 29 carries for an are-you-kidding-me 419 yards and six touchdowns in a 41-7 victory.
Last year's breakout 407-yard season opener against Tate — which stood as the biggest Pensacola Area rushing performance since 1996 — got Richardson on the recruiting map. Friday reinforced his ranking as one of the top prep players in the country.
We used to wonder if Richardson was in the conversation alongside Emmitt Smith and Demontray Carter as the best running backs in Pensacola area history. Now we wonder if Richardson might just be the best of the bunch.
"Special kid, he's a special kid," said Escambia High head coach Jimmy Nichols, who coached Smith at Escambia from 1984-87. "Last week, we just couldn't get anything going, but (Friday) you got to see some of the talent that this young man has. The more times he gets the ball, the more special he becomes. Alabama has a great guy coming."
If you still don't believe, try this: Touchdown runs of 52, 28, 31, 63, 4, and 80 yards. He gained at least 4 yards on 24 of his 29 carries. And in what became a defining play in Richardson's outrageous performance, Escambia faced a fourth-and-4 at the 31-yard line in the second quarter, advertised their play by having 10 players in tight, and Richardson blasted up the middle, practically untouched, to make it 20-0.
While he was in and out of the game sharing carries and watching his team's much-improved defense, Richardson never knew how many yards he had. With the more physical, rough-and-tumble nature of this year's game compared to the 407 in 2007, Richardson didn't have much time for counting.
"It was adding up, but I didn't really think it was like last year because last year I had a lot of big runs," he said. "This year, it was little by little and pounding it hard."
About that physical part: Richardson (5-11, 211 pounds) verbally committed to Alabama (he's calling it a soft verbal) before the 2008 season began, and some Crimson Tide coaches had football folks telling them that Richardson wasn't physical enough.
"Last year, people were telling the coaches at Alabama that they didn't think I was so tough," Richardson said. "This year, I had to make sure they knew I was tough. The offensive line did real good (Friday), and I was very hyped about them coming in and saying that. That's been on my mind all year."
He started the year with what he called a 'not-so-good' performance: A ho-hum 211 yards and four touchdowns.
A legacy now cemented, Richardson says he's just getting started. Look out.
"I'm ready to go now," Richardson said. "This is basically the first game of the season right here.
"I'm ready to go now."
