Quick start propels Milton to road win
Article By PNJ reporter Kyle Wright
Milton answered.
The Panther football team turned a shaky Escambia start into a quick lead and went on to a 33-14 victory against the Gators on Friday night at Emmitt Smith Field. Milton led 23-0 after eight minutes and scored 10 points on its last two drives to seal its first 2-0 start since 2004. "We had a good start and a good finish," Panthers coach Mike McMillion said. Escambia's fans had hoped Gators running back Trent Richardson could continue his electrifying start after rushing for 407 yards during a win against Tate in Week 1. Yet Milton had the most productive back on the field Friday. Panthers senior David Morgan tallied 142 yards on 17 attempts. He ran for a touchdown on his first carry. He went 42 yards to set up the game-sealing score on his next-to-last carry. "It was the line," Morgan said. "They played hard. They work hard in practice. They open the holes, and I'm gone." Richardson? He finished with 46 yards on 12 attempts, with 34 of those yards on one carry in the second quarter. He sat out much of the second half because of concerns about an ankle tweak. Injured ankles in Week 2 hampered Richardson during his first two high school seasons. Escambia coach Jimmy Nichols said the ankle was examined and deemed "fine." Milton had all the points it needed long before Richardson went out. The start couldn't have gone any better for the Panthers. It couldn't have gone any worse for the Gators. Escambia's first play: Richardson lost a fumble. Milton's first play: Morgan went 28 yards on a left-to-right cutback for the game's first score. The Gators' next three possessions resulted in a bad snap to the punter, a punt and a drive that went backwards. Escambia also had a long touchdown pass called back because of a penalty. The Panthers pounced on the opportunities. Talris Brown scored from one yard out three plays after Escambia's botched punt snap. Dustin Land found Demarco Dixon down the middle for an 88-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown on Milton's first pass play. Matt Shouppe's 34-yard field goal made it 23-0 with just over eight minutes gone. Escambia finished the first quarter with minus-one yard total offense. The Gators didn't pick up their initial first down until Richardson ran for 10 yards on Escambia's first play of the second quarter. "Our young and inexperienced team learned a valuable lesson tonight," Nichols said. "You've got to come ready to play. We didn't come ready to play. We started getting ready to play after we spotted them 20 points.   "But our kids kept battling, and that's what I'm proud of." The Gators took advantage a pair of Milton mistakes to get back within striking distance. Escambia went 48 yards on 12 consecutive running plays late in the second quarter for its first score. Anthony Johnson got the touchdown on a four-yard run. A Panther fumble gave the Gators a short field. The Milton sidelines got a little nervous when the Panthers fumbled away the opening kickoff to start the second half. Six plays later, David Calland went nine yards for a touchdown to bring Escambia within 23-14. Milton put the game out of reach with a determined drive late in the fourth quarter. Land got things going when he ran 14 yards to convert a third down in Panther territory. Moments later, Morgan busted loose for a 43-yard gain that put Milton in business at the Gator 2. Land scored on a bootleg two plays later for the game's final score. "I'm pleased with the start and pleased with the finish," McMillion said. "We've got to learn to play four quarters. If this team can learn to play four quarters, they can become a pretty good football team."
