Pine Forest downs Escambia

All Pine Forest had to do Friday was win, and they did in a big way.

The Eagles (5-4, 2-1) fought through a tough first quarter to down Escambia, 42-21. With the victory and Washington's 34-28 loss to Niceville, Pine Forest advances to the District 1-5A playoffs.
Escambia (2-6, 0-3) didn't waste much time to get the homecoming crowd on its feet. Only 20 seconds into the game, on their first play from scrimmage, quarterback Anthony Porterfield threw a lateral to Quayshond Dirden who quickly hit a streaking Brandon Burch down the line for an 80-yard touchdown reception. Tim Brown added the extra-point for the early 7-0 lead.
On the Gators' next possession, Pine Forest forced and recovered a turnover on Escambia's 5-yard line.
Eagle's quarterback David Lawerence took the snap up the middle for the touchdown. Sven Hurd tied the game with the extra point.
"We've had two weeks to prepare and we worked real hard," said Pine Forest Coach Jerry Pollard, on his team answering the early Escambia score. "I was proud of our guys."
After an Escambia punt, both defenses momentarily shut down for the next three possessions as 21 points were posted in only 33 seconds.
The Eagles put together a 63-yard drive, highlighted by Shawn Morris's 30-yard run and 9-yard touchdown run. The extra point was missed, giving Pine Forest a 13-7 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, Escambia's Trent Richardson returned the kick 100 yards up the middle for the score.
With the score 14-13, Jamarius Green of Pine Forest answered back with a 90-yard kick-off return of his own for back-to-back kickoff returns.
Morris punched in the two-point conversion to make the score 21-14.
"We played probably the best running back in Northwest Florida," Pollard said of Richardson. "You're not going to stop him, you just got hold him to a minimum."
Richardson finished with 199 yards and two touchdowns.
The Gators later gave Pine Forest another short field, starting on their 45.
The Eagles were able to eat some clock and score a touchdown by a Morris 1-yard run. Hurd added the extra point, making the score 28-14 at halftime.
The third quarter resembled the second, with Pine Forest was the only team able to score.
Lawerence connected a 35-yard pass to an open Green down the sideline for the easy score. Hurd again chipped in the point after for a 35-14 lead.
On the night, Green scored three touchdowns with 160 total yards.
In the fourth quarter, both teams scored another touchdown to make the final score 42-21. Richardson had an 80-yard run for Escambia and Green ran the ball in from four yards out.
