Milton upsets Escambia

It was a night to remember for the Milton Panthers.
With 56 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Escambia missed a potential game-tying field goal, and Milton earned its first win of the season with a 24-21 upset of the previously unbeaten Gators.
“It was a huge win for us; (Escambia) Coach (Willie) Spears does an awesome job, we just put a great game plan together and the kids followed it,” Milton coach Chafan Marsh said. “It has been a tough year for us, got to give credit to these seniors, they did an awesome job.”
Milton (1-7, 1-2 District 1-6A) got on the board first following a Gators fumble, as they tacked on a 22-yard field goal by Corliss Waitman to take a 3-0 lead.
Escambia shook off the turnover and drove down on their next possession to take the 7-3 lead on a 22-yard touchdown run by Jabir Frye.
Milton recaptured the lead during the second quarter, though, with an 18-play drive capped off by a 10-yard run by Andre Flakes — his first offensive touchdown of the season.
Flakes added another touchdown in the second with a 3-yard run up the middle to allow Milton to take a 17-7 lead after the extra point by Waitman.
However, on the next Gators’ possession, Danikeei Hollowell broke loose for a 71-yard touchdown run on a third-and-24 to close the gap at the half to 17-14.
Milton got the ball to start the second half and quickly went to work on extending the lead with a 12-play scoring drive to make it a 24-14 lead. Shemar Henderson capped off that drive with a 13-yard run to push the Panthers back ahead by 10 points.
The Gator offense went into hurry-up mode on the next drive and Gerold Bright capped off their possession with a 30-yard TD run to get the Gators back to within a field goal at 24-21.
Milton’s defense made a couple of big stops down the stretch to keep it a 24-21 margin, including a final stand in the closing minutes.
Milton fans held their breath as the Gators field goal attempt by Emilio Maldonado was low and to the left of its mark. The bated breath turned to celebration as the clock wound down for a perfect ending to Milton’s senior night.
“I have to give credit to our seniors, they held in and pulled together,” Marsh said.
“It was a great team win, great team effort offensively and defensively. They just stuck together and I’m really proud of them.”
