Escambia High Gators:Schedules and Varsity Game Summary

Escambia High Gators

Tub goes to Escambia Hig
Ye Olde Wash Boiler has a new home.
For the first time in more than a decade, "The Tub" is back at Escambia.
The Gators used big touchdown runs and stingy defense to top Pensacola High 35-14 on Friday night at Emmitt Smith Field and earn their first win in the series since 2001.
"In 2000, the last time Escambia had it, these kids were in elementary school," Escambia coach Willie Spears said. "For those guys to start building the foundation for a legacy is huge. These guys can say they were the ones to get the tub back."
Danikeei Hollowell got things going quickly when he ran through the middle of the Tigers' defense on the game's first play, sprinting to a 67-yard touchdown and a 6-0 lead.
"We said as an offense that we would score on the first play, and we did," Spears said. "But they drove right back down there and made it a game real quick."
Pensacola High drove right down the field on the ensuing drive, getting as close as the Gators' 6, but a fumbled snap and a holding penalty brought the drive to a halt.
The PHS defense then forced Escambia to punt, and the Tigers went right back to work, again driving into the red zone. On the first play of the second quarter from the Escambia 1, the Gators' defense made a big play. A bad shotgun snap couldn't be handled by PHS and when the ball popped into the air, the Gators' Logan Walden took advantage.
The junior snatched the ball out of the air and ran the length of the field for the 12-0 lead.
The score remained that way until just before the half when Roy Colum III plunged in from 2 yards out to cut the lead to 12-7 at the break.
The second half, though, belonged to Escambia. The Gators used a 35-yard run by Chris Epps on a fake punt to move into Pensacola High territory, and seven plays later, Jake Durant recovered a fumble in the end zone for an 18-7 lead.
On the ensuing PHS possession, a mishandled exchange gave the Gators the ball right back, and Gerold Bright found the end zone from 14 yards out two plays later, essentially sealing the game.
Pensacola High got a 64-yard touchdown pass from Colum to Eddie Shoots, and Escambia added a 28-yard field goal by Emilio Maldonado and 55-yard run from Bright to round out the scoring.
"We ran out of gas on defense," Pensacola High coach Mike Bennett said. "... Things just weren't meant to be tonight."
Hollowell led the Gators with 144 rushing yards, and Bright added 140. Colum led Pensacola with 194 yards passing and 98 yards rushing.
Escambia (5-0) moves to 2-0 in District 1-6A. Pensacola High (1-5) now is 1-1. Each team plays a non-district game next week before returning to district play.
"We've got to get better each week," Spears said. "We turned the ball over too much, on defense we bend but don't break, and PHS outplayed us on special teams tonight.
"I'd rather be 2-0 with all those mistakes than 0-2 with no mistakes, so this win means a lot."
