New-look Escambia routs Tate
Article by: PNJ Sports reporter, Bill Vilona
Gators proved their progress with dominating effort in 45-0 victory.
This is not the Escambia High football team of recent past.

The Gators showed the difference in an emphatic way, dominating in all aspects of a 45-0 victory Friday night against Tate on homecoming at Pete Gindl Stadium.
Five different players scored for Escambia (2-2), five turnovers were produced, the Gators never had to punt and their defense produced a goal-line stand to end the first half and ultimately define a shutout performance. What a way to start District 1-6A play.
“That was exciting. It’s finally clicking,” Escambia first-year coach Willie Spears said. “For us, we have seen it all along. It started in camp this summer. We saw it.
And then it didn’t happen against West Florida (9-7 loss) and we had eight turnovers against Crestview (35-7 loss in second week).”
“I told our players, ‘Guys everyone thinks we stink. Everyone thinks we are the same Escambia. They don’t see what we see. We need to show ’em. This is a perfect opportunity.”
The Gators seized it, shined with it.
Junior tailback Danikiee Hollowell led the way, scoring the first pair of touchdowns in the first half and converting the first three two-point conversion runs for the Gators. And then, it was Escambia’s defense that set the tone.
Even with a roster of 30, requiring players to stay on the field and switch from offense and defense, the Gators never lost energy. Their defense fought to keep Tate out of the end zone on the first three plays of a goal-line situation, then pounced on a botched exchange to end the half up 16-0.
“We executed every play, offense and defense,” said Hollowell. “The defense really showed what they are really about when they were on the goal line.”

"I've always made a total effort, even when the odds seemed entirely against me. I never quit trying; I never felt that I didn't have a chance to win." - Arnold Palmer
