Pine Forest knew coming into Friday night's game against Escambia at Emmitt Smith Field was important. In hindsight, the Eagle's 21-3 victory is huge. Trebiam Suggs ran for 202 yards and two touchdowns, and the Pine Forest defense was stingy all night to lead the Eagles into next week's game against Milton looking like for a district title. Combined with the Panthers' 28-20 win against Pace, next week's game now is a District 1-6A title game. Both teams will enter the final week of district play with a 4-1 in the league. "The Milton game is extremely important," Pine Forest head coach Jerry Pollard said after the win."It seems like every week I'm telling the guys it's the biggest game of their careers, and the next week will be the same. We’ve got to go out and beat Milton to get into the playoffs." Suggs was the work-horse for Pine Forest the second straight week, carrying the ball 28 times, including touchdown runs of 12 and 58 yards to secure the win. "It was a great effort," Pollard said of Suggs' night. "I thought everyone played well." Pine Forest quarterback Rashaad Lee missed the game with a knee injury, and the Eagles threw only one pass in the contest. "Without Rashaad we've got a 10th-grade quarterback going" Pollad said of Reid Gilliland. "He's learning, and he's getting better." Pine Forest took an early 2-0 lead when a punt snap tipped off the fingertips of the Escambia punter. The eagles then added a 41-yard field goal from Jordan McBride before Suggs scored from 12 yards to make it 12-0 at halftime. After a Patrick Mackovic's 28-yard field goal made the score 12-3, another bad punt snap gave Pine Forest its second safety of the game. Gerald Bright led Escambia with 89 rushing yards, and Escambia finished the game with 157 yards of total offense. "I think (our defense) has matured," Pollard said. "We've got a senior group; they know what's going on and are playing well." While Pine Forest prepares for Milton and the possible district title, Escambia prepares for Pensacola High. The winner of the game still can advance to a three-team shootout on Monday Nov.5 for district runner-up spot. Any combination of the wins, other that victories by Milton and Escambia, create a shootout.
